Stig, very normal in fact, as i am betting you know/and do. but at some point along the way one realizes that the IMA/ims? player discovers that it is a much more efficient use of energy to be IMA rather than external. i used to play/live monkey style. looking back i wish it woulda been snake, dragon, or bird but i digress. but some of these style especially the 3 i just mentioned are kinda a hard/soft combination. the main thing is now i am dragonish bgz. yeah i am blessed that i have a good health and a happy lifestyle and have the good fortune to hang out with birds of a feather. i do some tai chi, the same form you do. and some basic xingyi, just becoz it is fun , cool, useful, etc .i also imagine that mountain hermits or forest recluses can also kick ass like rare grandpas. i disagree with the graph to some extent. 10 years for many i reckon. but some folks are more naturally gifted in the IMA aspects and at 4-6 years can be getting there. some folks can never get there.

what if the goal is to remain combat ready as one advances in years? most external guys who did not do qigong also, dont fare to well at say 60? there are exceptions, i would not have wanted to tangle with a 70 year old jack dempsey.(i dont wish to tangle with anyone, in fact)(but sometimes there is not a choice)

"Moment to moment awareness of the total picture comes not in sequence but all at once, and changes moment to moment also in its totality. If you perceive its totality, a pattern therein, and anticipate changes of this pattern because you understand the pattern and know what kind of changes it leads to, this "intercepts" any new change before it occurs -- that's one psychophysical component of it, weighed toward "psycho," but then you can redistribute the weight of "intercept" toward more "physical" -- i.e. when all of the prerequisites are embodied, all oncoming force can be transmitted down the skeletal structure to the legs and then to the ground and under the opponent's root (if he has any, or else under the unrooted structure which is oh so much easier to send flying ). So you intercept his onslaught and uproot him with his own force without having spent any of your own. That's when they go boink effortlessly when it's real, and that's what they're trying to imitate when it's not. Taomeow, i like this. i tend to stay on the "psycho" side of it i know what you are referring to in the onslaught part. but i dont call that intercepting, i call that returning his force or jin back to him. and jin comes in many flavors and levels. the intercepting i am talking about is , your, "before it occurs" templetao, you got my attention with What it felt like to me was an electromagnetic force pushed me back my bones vibrated heavily as i was pushed back and i felt very electric as this magnetic force buzzed me back. dawei "Imagine that with energy infiltration or penetration. Have you ever felt that attack you? " yeppers and this also comes in different levels and flavors. much to do with intent. "IMO, you can think how martial artist intercepts (or deflects or side steps) a punch." for some odd and un-explained reason, i always find myself behind the other guy. and again templetao "So if i were to give a lesson in distance power I would do it like a master and i would demonstrate the deeper meaning of projecting." is this something you are willing to discuss? and i totally agree with How can you be at true peace when the world you live in screams in pain. The taoist arts is a gift to man because man was sick, suffering, and lost their way. if this wasnt the case then man would not need taoist arts. i wanted to add this from chapter 71 TTC Knowing ignorance is strength. Ignoring knowledge is sickness. If one is sick of sickness, then one is not sick. The sage is not sick because he is sick of sickness. Therefore he is not sick. Stigweard, i talked with a 30+ year tai chi player today about your idea. and he said that maybe, something good will come from it, if you follow thru. he seemed to like your idea.

"Yup, and gives ample warning before he fajins, it's like someone who is getting ready to sneeze going aah...aaahhh...aaaaahhhh...choo! Well, if someone is going to sneeze in my face and gives all the indications, I'll protect myself... and if someone is going to fajin, ditto. As The Beatles almost sang, Hey! You've got to hide fajin away!" Taomeow , i really like how you explain things. intercepting, what does that mean? if one is a hard stylist then it may mean a block, right? but for the IMA intercepting imo should be the act of stopping the other IMA from issuing their energy. and one does not want to misfire or exhaust this energy for sure. and i am kinda sure IMA is for internal martial artist , not internal martial scientist.

"Zerostao commented, "light being the foundation of spirit." Can you explain that, or give an example? If you can't, don't state it as a fact, unless you can explain it (which isn't implying that you stated it as a fact," i gave an explanation in my next post. i stated it as representing my understanding. i am in no position to state anything as a fact or absolute truth. "I use the term electrodynamic to more honestly discuss the light in nature. Electromagnetic is a Seventeenth century term that is both obsolete, and implies a distorted view of the two-way electric fields in nature. People who use the word electromagnetic remind me of my mother who still calls a refrigerator an icebox." i am in the opinion of that science has not yet fully understood electricities. "Keep in mind,...from Light's point of view, from Light's shoes so-to-say, it travels no distance, in no time, and thus has no need of speed. " from my unity thread when unity remains within itself it is changeless. when it reflects itself it creates. to understand the complete process of creation, we have to understand the concept of the changeless within the ever-changing.( "there is a point in time when the arrow neither moves or stops")

lienshan PS. That the light = a choice was not obvious to me before this thread! the combination of absorbing light and gathering qi = the gathering of spirit. (if my level of understanding is not flawed) nurturing original spirit and expressing extra-ordinary ability are accomplished in light form. without light one will not attain the higher levels. without light there is no chance for immortal potential. one needs the path of qi-light circulation, absorbing the light of the cosmos for repair and nourishment. this path follows the nervous system. this circulation passes thru the pituitary, pineal, adrenal, thymus, thyroid, and all glands. this is strongly related to opening the heavenly eye. to activate the pineal gland is to slow the aging process and maintain energy. this qi-light circulation returns one to a youthful vitality. one must nourish this original spirit(qi-light) to connect to the astral planes.

To rule in hell, or serve in heaven?

if wordly authority was a projection of my mind there would be anarchy but i understand what you are saying. -
yeah. i am not sure about 100% of this but overall, yeah. light carries information to us that we recieve. aura is expression of qi in a higher vibration. qi being the foundation of life. light being the foundation of spirit. qi resides in the 3d where physical bodies live. light is in the higher dimensions as well having many qualitative levels.

in the alchemy thread i did give the sequence of moves for the smaller circulation, that would be the place to start anyways. as long as you are inhaling or exhaling in coordination with what the movement needs you should be fine. i personally like the qigongified taichi. once one gets grand circulation it becomes quite effective martially. but i also feel the bio-mechanics of tai chi is a good in close fighting style. also imo the xingyiquan is a really good in close fighting style. having said that, i am a baguazhang player sorry guys if i went off topic. but fa jin exists also in the xingyiquan and baguazhang.

GIH "True, but authority depends on us for its power. The reason it doesn't like to be ignored is because it gets powered by our attention and love. If we don't give it any, it knows it is dying and instead of earning respect in legitimate ways by love, it tries to earn respect by fear." interesting perspective. i was speaking of wordly authority. you are speaking of otherwordly? -K- "I do lots of that and yes "it works" but i'm not doing it because it works. Because I fell into it that way "it works." I'd make fly/flippant remark here. C'ept it is pointless IMO Still, none of what I'm doing even registers with the folks i'd like it to. I think. And IMO if I share my POV with folks it doesn't go down too well IME. i think you march to the beat of your own drum -K- i respect that very much. -
may i ask which style of tai chi you play? i know in the yang style there are specific sequences of moves for initiating the small circle of heaven and grand circulation. i had been hoping to look at this in Stig's taichi alchemy thread but it just kinda fizzled out. very disapointing for me.

anyways, i am never so impressed by some tai chi player who sends another tai chi player stumbling/flying/crashing off to a great distance. you guys who push hands know how this works. you catch the other guy off balance or not rooted and there he goes if you act at the right moment. i would call this type of thing a hard jin. there is also what i would call a soft jin. it is like the tip of a whip, very focused and penetrating. it can cause bad damage. when you hit the other guy with this soft jin, he doesnt go flying backwards, he hardly moves at all, maybe no one even noticed that he moved at all. i dont see how this type of thing could safely be tested.

i had this silly notion, that the best way to rule , is to serve. SZ "If you just ignore authority and live your life as you see fit, what is there to rebel against?" i like this. but authority will then rebel against you, authority does not like to be ignored. i ignore it all the time but it doesnt always go smoothly. -
interesting about the yew tree as i am aware of some native american "reverence" to that particular tree. tree qigong-best in the mornings, not for cloudy or rainy days, def not during thunderstorms not at night. face the side of the tree that is facing the morning sun. cedars are great. evergreens, pines, whatever tree you choose and have good connection with make sure it is filled with leaves. stand on the roots if you can. these are my observations and not associated with any particular school or style. there is the natural symbiotic relationship that scotty mentioned. you may feel a sensation much like the flow of electric current.

"There is no tree-communication college, unfortunately." there are forests. find a suitable grove and listen. edit> trees make wonderful baguazhang trainers. and it is easier to have it "made in the shade" while hanging out with trees. I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. the poet who wrote this was killed at the second battle of the marne 1918

amusing lil rant. (i wish i had yer falling down laughing emoticon to insert here) however here on TTB i do see alot of this "faster than ever" or the fastest way to whatever mentality that is not productive in anyway. patience, perserverance, practice actually does work better imo. it is unfortunate that there are frauds that do bring shame on themself. they do not bring shame on tai chi itself. if a true master steps up and volunteers for your "scientific proof test" cool, if none do, that is cool too. looks like you have many interests and acheivements you are not looking to add the title of taiji master to your resume'? becoz i am thinking that to be such a thing truly, is to commit to it entirely and exclusitively and not as a sideline hobby. it is a great healthy hobby for sure, it feels good to do, it looks cool. i hear many who say "well i have x number of years study in this or that" how many hours does one have in it? hours each day every day. it has to become one's life. it is common that many folks want to get somewhere without having to do what it takes to get there. if you dont eat tai chi, drink it,breathe it, sleep it, dream it, ponder on it, take it to a spiritual level, why expect to become great at it? i hate cliche' but there are something to cliche' that made them a cliche' , i reckon. but however you say it > when you are ready to find your teacher , that teacher will appear or find you. that article on readiness by sifu jenny
