  1. Thank you for posting this. I would like very much to see many more like this around. Btw, I would have to disagree that Daoists don`t take interest in the political well being of the globe. Perhaps not using the tools of political office, but influencing the hearts and minds toward De for the betterment of humanity, they are surely interested, as evidenced by extensive writings on bringing harmony amongst the populace. Though you did say "strive for." Perhaps this is true, though they should..

Horseflies bite me. I slap them. That's the way it is.
  3. Please help me understand this!

Just going to put out the thoughts I have on the matter, which are simply vaulted over the internet and I'm not really sure where they're landing, so please excuse if they land in the neighbors yard by mistake. I think the guru was throwing people out because they were seeking someone to enlighten them, which he cannot do. The best, maybe, that he could do was to throw them out to teach them not to depend on others to see for them. I think a fair bit of your trouble might be coming from inner sense of entitlement to what you want. There are things that you want and why should we have desires if nobody satisfies them for us. It doesn't work that way. I say this as someone, like everyone else, who struggles with many cravings, but we have to be able to desire things without needing to have them. We have to be able to accept that there are things we want, immensely perhaps, that we simply will not have. We have to be okay with that. The desire for them is not bad, in my humble opinion. We appreciate life, nature, experience, and especially people. But we have to be okay with not having them. You want this girl. That's great. You appreciate her. You can even let her know that (in a non creepy way), so long as you know that you have no entitlement to her. To desire her is a beautiful thing even, and like tantric sex, not attaining full fulfillment can be even more beautiful as it's more long lasting. Those are my thoughts. I don't know what they will be worth, but we've all struggled with the desire for deeper connection, and so I know that you're not just a lonely internetter. You are a beautiful human being seeking a deeper connection, just like every other person on the planet. May the path show itself to you.
  4. Pain and Zen

Personally I'm cautious about pushing through numbness too much as it can end up causing arthritis. If I want to do more sitting I'll do some walking meditation between sets. The idea that chi will eliminate all pain may be true for some but not for all. It's the chi circulation that makes me wish I could sit longer, but I don't need to damage myself.

  8. Wu Wei 'non doing' meditation suggested in TTC? query

The idea that "Taoist doctrine dictates not acting" is rather misled. "Just do it" a la Miyamoto Musashi (who the Nike ad execs were influenced by) also falls into the wu wei method. Following the seasons and planting your crops when the best time arrives is wu wei as well. It goes with the flow of heaven and earth. Now that we have The Four Canons of the Yellow Emperor, there is much to be reconsidered about the scope of what these concepts really mean, imho.

Here's my translation and commentary for chapter 10 as well (from my PPD). Anything not in brackets is part of the translation (following the title).
  10. Wu Wei 'non doing' meditation suggested in TTC? query

Here is a translation and commentary I wrote in my PPD back in 2012, on Chapter 16.
  11. Practice Question: Any way to stop excessive sweating?

read up on magnesium. It helps regulate internal temperature, and can also help with calmness. You can buy magnesium oxide powder very cheaply at healthfood stores. The dose will be on the bottle, I think a tablespoon per day. But as with most supplements, it's best to go 3-4 weeks on, then 1-2 weeks off, and stop when the issue goes away. This way your body can find it's own way to do it. See a naturopathic doctor (N.D.) if you can afford it.
  12. Jerry Alan Johnson completed interview link

Many thanks to Jerry Alan Johnson for sharing some of his profound experience. Hugely valuable information there which I have already started to try putting into practice. Lots of work to do. Thanks again, H.E.

  16. Qi gong. Taoist, buddhist differences. yoga

Shaolin hard-chi-gong also uses reverse breathing and is more about energizing. Some things you might find in Buddhist based chi gong is more attention to mindfulness training. I mean, what better way to ensure you're focusing on the breath than using your entire body in the process of chi gong!? Naturally, Buddhism is focused especially on peacefulness, so the chi gong will sometimes be used as an aid to this endeavor. This can also aid in opening energy pathways by creating less resistance, more acceptance, and clearing and training the mind. Daoism and Buddhism partner very well in this way. When energy is flowing smoothly, this peaceful state is perpetuated, so there is a complimentary support between vibrant chi and a peaceful and pleasant demeanor. Are there particular blockages that you want to dissolve? There are many many types of chi gong for just about every purpose, from building immunity, to longevity, healing, etc.
  17. Perennial Question: Nature of Yin/Yang . . .

I agree for the most part that unification is the trajectory of yin, and multiplicity is the trajectory of yang; but, these might also be caused simply by imbalance. Both multiplicity an unity have their place. Example: someone is meditating, they have clear awareness and balance of yin stability and yang attentiveness, they then become too yin and start reveling/day dreaming. Thus yin results in multiplicity. The meditator then realizes their reverie and opens their eyes to become more focused - so yang brings about the unity again, balancing yin and yang. I think, as my above comment shows, these things are all very relative, and even less finite when you get into the multitudinous cycles of the 5 elements. For example, at 40, this is the Earth stage. Sounds very yin right? Well, it is also the harvest time of your life. All those seeds you planted in your 20's and 30's are now waiting to be picked. Time to collect. Following earth is metal phase. Surely we must be winding down right? Metal is associated with the Heaven trigram - 3 yang lines. The Heaven trigram signifies the patriarch. Still yang. Maybe look at it this way: The traditional Chinese musical scales consist of 5 notes, (do, re, mi, so, la, in western terms). Played in order of do-re-me-so-la, you have a major tonality. Played in order of re-mi-so-la-do you have a minor tonality. Played in order of so-la-re-mi-do you have a mixed tonality. So depending on the central note, the other notes play different roles, harmonizing and supporting the other notes in different ways. Some may even seem really out of tune, but then when they release to the central note, the dissonance even plays a supporting role.
  18. Mo Pai Discussion and Vote

will say it here too - that restricting the Mopai discussion forum (or any form dedicated to a single school) to "the pit" would be disrespectful. There should be no Mopai forum if it will be restricted to "the pit." If there is a large enough internet following for Mopai, which there obviously is, this following should discuss it on their own site. They don't need TTB, and there's enough negativity here as it is. As I recall we wanted to reduce this negativity in order to facilitate better discussions and thus attract more contributors with experience and wisdom to share.
  19. Mo Pai sub forum? In the pit? Come vote; only 1% voted so far

I'll just say it here as the vote system didnt really account for this response - but if there's any school's forum restricted to the pit, I'd personally find that disrespectful and much worse than no forum at all.
  20. The TTC talks about both. Why people overlook this I don't understand - as if the sage isnt shown to be someone of immense and pure character. The TTC redefines pure virtue and character, but it is always pointing in three directions at the same time - the virtue and character of Heaven (destiny etc.), the virtue and character of Earth (water, wind, etc.), and the virtue and character of the sage. When you see all three directions together, you also see what their virtues and characters reflect -- The Dao.
  21. Character, in the sense of "someone has character," is hugely important on what one can learn of Dao, but I don't want to pick an argument. Personally, I think you can't miss it in the original characters if u read the whole chapter as a chapter and retain the context of preceding chapters. There's a lot more to it, too, however.. But people can see whatever they want in the clouds - I'm not tryin' to tell you it's tigers when you see dragons....
  22. Though I agree with the sentiments behind it, I respectfully disagree that the Dao De Jing has nothing to do with character and virtue. Dao is shown by the virtue of character in sages. The character of sages is reflected in behaviour of Dao.
  23. Greetings

Just my opinion, but - you can learn qigong from anyone that is already benefiting from it. You can also learn it from videos. I don't think you can learn much about it from books, though you can learn some of the finer fundamentals from books if you have already learned the basics from a teacher or video. Practice is certainly one of the best teachers, especially when coupled with balanced study of wisdom texts (ie., read until your full, then stop and reflect).
  24. Would appreciate help

My guess would be that it's related to chi/heat rising to the surface/skin. I would suggest learning bone strengthening chi gong which packs the chi into the bones. This way it has somewhere to be easily stored so it doesn't rise to the surface. In Mopai, you're probably trying to pack chi into the dantien, but maybe there's a reason it doesn't stay there, maybe a good reason that you shouldn't ignore, like it's needed somewhere else. I can only speculate however....
