This topic appears from time to time in posts on other topics but I haven't seen a topic dedicated to this question of book study in cultivation. Below is a quote from page 11 of Master Nan-Huai-Chin's "Working Towards Enlightenment." Note that Nan-Huai-Chin has been recognized as being Enlightened by a number of masters of the Buddhist tradition. "Suppose people wanted to become buddhas - to study the Buddha Dharma. If they were to take these works listed above (about 25 Buddhist scriptures), and spend three to five years of effort reading and studying to enter deeply into them and put their contents into practice, this would definitely be enough. It would be best if everyone could awaken without departing from the scriptures and treatises. Some think that all that is necessary is to cultivate practice and do meditation work. They think that it is not necessary to read the scriptures and treatises. This is absolutely wrong. We must recognize that in doing meditation work, if we do not clearly understand the principles, if our views are not correct, then our meditation work will not be able to get on the right track. In other words, if our meditation work is not done well, it is just because we have not mastered the principles involved." Yes? No?

Awesome solar power road paving of the future!
Harmonious Emptiness replied to Harmonious Emptiness's topic in The Rabbit Hole
It would revolutionize a number of things in the economy, such as corrupt road contracts, which makes it difficult to implement for sure. I like the idea that it produces up to 3 times more power than current needs, and that it will do something with recycled junk. It would cost lots, but, save even more. I think a country with free power would be at a huge military advantage just due to the fact of how much extra cash they would have. I can't see the costs exceeding current unnecessary military costs. They would just have to use the same factories or something to keep from causing too much disruption. -
What has TaoBums taught you?
Harmonious Emptiness replied to BaguaKicksAss's topic in General Discussion
Spoken with many teachers, students, and even grandmasters who studied with Masters of Wu Dang mountain, other temples, schools, styles, masters, and teachers of whom I didn't even know existed previously. Formulated a practice and study regimen of exercises and inquiry based very much on the shared experiences of the many wonderful, experienced, generous, warm-hearted, and wise participants in this collective. Learned Classical Chinese, with the encouragement, experiences, and knowledge of a number of participants here who persisted in haggling with me over subtleties and nuances in meaning. Last, but perhaps not least, never missed being without television for 4+ years I've been here and always had a place to express and reflect on all passing spiritual illuminations. You all are my teachers, and I thank you humbly as a student who's life you have changed many times over. With sincerity, gratitude, and respect, -
Princeton study confirms: USA is an oligarchy

I walked past a suburban tree once where there were about 3 tree frogs sitting. I've studied African poly-rhythms, and let me tell you, they were jamming. Actually sounded a lot like the intro about 20 seconds into this: Another time I was in Barbados where they have singing frogs. I was enjoying the patio at the place I was staying and realized something deep about the nature of tempo and syncopation by listening to them. I could tell they were responding when I started to jam along a bit. Birds too. Definitely some syncopation communication happening there too. (for folks not sure what syncopation refers to, count 1&2&3&4AND!1&2&3&4AND! to get the idea. The AND is the syncopated beat)

Book study leading to mastery
Harmonious Emptiness replied to Harmonious Emptiness's topic in General Discussion
The attentive guidance of a master could easily take the place of textual study, imho. I suppose the question, is whether extensive textual study can take the place of a master in guiding our practice.- 83 replies

Can we practice/meditate/do significant energy work while working on other things?
Harmonious Emptiness replied to Brother_Thelonious's topic in Welcome
This thread has given voice to some excellent comments, so kudos to that. Now, what if we do take the word "meditation" out of the quotient and get more specific. can we cultivate calm connection to... the Source wisdom kindness towards all beings attention and calm and connection to our innermost being sublimation (not suppression) of procreative energy For myself, I think the majority of what I would say is meditation during mundane activities is mostly more "maintenance work" like guarding the chi within during activity. However, the more "cultivation" type of work that is always possible, imho, is sublimation of procreative energy into spiritual energy, manifesting positive spiritual states and energy. This of course takes previous experience of doing so in an attentive state of calm, but with some coordination in your breath and intention, it's entirely feasible during mundane activities. Not to mention that plenty of masters realized sudden enlightenment while just walking around.- 92 replies

Book study leading to mastery
Harmonious Emptiness replied to Harmonious Emptiness's topic in General Discussion
You still need "practice, experience, meditation, and wisdom(which comes with the other three)," I think if one were devoted to reading, meditating on, and making efforts to learn from/put into practice 25 Buddhist sutras, the spiritual context of each work will be illuminated by the others. Maybe reading all of the sutras will show how they don't contradict. I think one needs to find out how they work for one's self too I was just writing the above response when you posted, so, yes doesn't negate following the paths trodden by others on our own journey to the Pure Land...- 83 replies

Harmonious Emptiness replied to Brother_Thelonious's topic in Welcome
There are things that can be learned during meditation and chi gong that can be repeated spontaneously afterwards. One big part of chi gong is clearing and drawing chi. Gong also means skill and practice. If you have the skill you can use it. There's less likelyhood of having "breakthroughs" that meditation is conducive to, but one can certainly develop their meditative skills by simply not giving in to other people's stress, and focusing on the task at hand. This is a continuation of the connection you made during meditation.- 92 replies

Why should I have a teacher? Or follow anyone's advice here at all?
Harmonious Emptiness replied to Ryan94's topic in Daoist Discussion
Follow it to see if it's worth following. If it's not, stop following it. If it is, congratulations. If you're following advice of people on the internet just because they said to, I'd say that's not a good operation method. You like the teachings of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. Great. There are many many ancient teachers and books to learn similar lessons from, with varying styles of explanation. Some of those have lead to practices deemed by billions (throughout history) to help one integrate those lessons into their being and actions. They might not be for you, but there are reasons they have endured for centuries. I'd say, try to keep your cup empty so that it can be filled, but be careful about leaving it unattended. -

If you can't do this, you won't learn anything from anyone anyways. Why do I try to help people that don't even want to be helped though...? -

Imo, if you practice something that leads to greater calm and stability, resulting in deeper insights into yourself and the environment around you, the practice has cultivated shen to some degree. Shen connects you with the Universe, the Dao, the Heavens. If you feel this, accompanied by a resilient calm, your shen is being nurtured by becoming receptive to Dao and De. This would include practicing emotional balance and stability. Jing gong, skillfully cultivating jing, may not even include movement exercises. Nutrition is effectively jing gong as it helps regulate hormones. Emotional balance is also part of jing gong in helping to regulate hormones. Chi gong, well you know what chi gong is, BUT, simple emotional balance, yin and yang, neither extreme nor lazy, also leads to enhanced jing-chi transformation. Chi-shen transformation takes place in stillness as well when you know how to "follow the road," according to the sources I've read, and my own self-evaluated experience. So.. there are many roads. Maybe it's not the road but how you walk...

The Moors re-civilized Europe after the fall of Rome

Alright, just lost what I had written, wasting more time on this 1) Horowitz didn't invent the theories behind 432, he just said that 440 was used for militant purposes. So again, more diversion from you that doesn't address the factor 9 hertz and geometry connection. 2) You seemed to miss the point about ultrasound. Ultrasound simply proves that matching the frequency of an object with sound has a physical effect on the object. So if the factor 9 hertz and geometry connection shows anything about the construction of phenomena, hertz would make some difference on the sonic activation of other corresponding phenomena. So, if you can't bear to admit that you've had a blind spot on this, perhaps just take a look in the following mirror: http://www.csj.org/infoserv_cult101/checklis.htm
-
Yeah, exactly, they don't address 432 at all, nor use instruments with A432. So if you're done providing me a whole bunch of long articles that don't even address the basis of the argument, I think you should just leave frequency out of your thesis and just focus on harmonies since that is what it's about. So long as you continue to falsely accuse people of being in a CULT because they see some interesting info about 432 your taking your agenda off topic and only providing distractions when someone addresses your so called debunks. So again, stop making these false accusations with so-called evidence that doesn't even address the reasons that support 432. Your insulting people, and basically running away by throwing a bunch of long articles at me which don't even address my arguments. I'm tired of this game and reading the irrelevant articles you use as counterpoints, and I think we've both proven my point that you have no valid argument that directly counters the reasons that people are interested in 432. This doesn't mean 432 is super important in the universe, but nothing you have said proves anything otherwise. So again, stop accusing people of being in a CULT because they disagree with you, and focus on what you are interested in - overtones etc..
-
What about sympathetic resonance like in ultrasound therapy, matching the resonance of something within a couple of hertz can cause that thing to vibrate in beat with the resonance? It's pretty darn good luck that the angles match up, to such varied hertz numbers, which create a perfect major chord with only very slight intonation adjustments needed for 100% perfect pitch (in hertz). If resonating at the tone of something is important, then 440 vs. 432 is important. We know from ultrasound, and opera singers shattering crystal glasses by doing vibrato around the same pitch of the glass, that matching pitch is important. So if this factor 9 pattern of hertz increases matches up with other harmonies, numeric or otherwise, then it would be at least worth considering. I don't want to take over the thread, as there's more to talk about on the subject, but you've claimed to discredit something which can not be denied (the number correspondences), was not addressed (directly) outside of this conversation, and to which you still haven't provided a direct argument to which I haven't responded to with counter evidence.
-
All I said is that it's interesting and corresponds to a larger organization of numerical values in the universe. That much is true, and the ratio system works with or without A=432 so I don't see why you need to get so frustrated about it, calling it a cult. Trying to shame people with arbitrary accusations because they hold opposing viewpoints - that is cult mentality and behaviour and really counterproductive to having a successful conversation about something. So undertones and overtones are yin and yang - sure whatever. Everything has yin and yang. How is that any less arbitrary? It has some meaning in your experience I hope. Numerology has shown it's value in my own experience. So we're both talking about things that are arbitrary to most everyone else. "The secret of Taoism is exactly against this "one to one correspondence" between number and letter which is gematria as numerology." Taoism is all about correspondences. Look at the 5 element theory, I Ching symbolism, Feng Shui astronomy. Just because you find a pattern doesn't mean things are limited. Just because a wheel only turns doesn't mean it can only go one direction.

The Moors re-civilized Europe after the fall of Rome
Harmonious Emptiness replied to Harmonious Emptiness's topic in The Rabbit Hole
Exactly the type of mythology I'm talking about. Take any of the top students from any race from any part of the planet, put them in school with the right people, encouragement, and environment, and they will learn anything that any other top student was able to learn. Humans showed up 600,000 years before the Egyptian civilization. The evolution was already done for everybody, and this is proven by the above statement I just made. btw, a picture on a flag of conquerors has no weight compared to 100s of ancient artifacts -
Thanks for bringing the topic round JB. I dont disagree with any of that. Its really just a matter of affinity with numerology and re-occurring numbers in nature and the universe that makes 432 appealing. If one has no affinity for those things they're easily ignored, but they are rather fascinating otherwise and not requiring cult brainwashing for one to think so. I'd be interested to hear more about the no-beat frequency stuff though. I definitely find 11th chords (4 harmony) to be the most beautiful when used with expertise.

The thing with the angles is that is lines up according to numerology, while not according to numerous other factors. The cents go off as the numbers get higher, which is the same with strings when they are not perfectly intonated to compensate. You are concerned with the other factors - they are interesting, but they still don't refute the simple fact that there is correspondence with the numbers of the angles which create those shapes. You say I didn't read the articles. Sure I didn't read every word, but enough to catch the gist, and we both know that they did not refute this basis, so you can point to a million other things as to why the correspondence to those angles don't matter, but they are still there corresponding with the factor 9 grid to lead to the notes which require only slight intonation adjustments to be musically perfect. Say whatever you want about my reading skills - you still haven't said anything to refute that those correspondences exist because you can't - they are there plain as day. Do they matter in the grand scheme of everything else? I don't know - but they sure are interesting to be so perfectly lined up numerogically. I did read the articles as well as I needed to, and for the 3rd time - you have nothing on those angles. Lots of other interesting research, but nothing that refutes those number correlations, so they still stand, and just telling me to read the articles which don't address those correlations ain't gonna change anything.
