  1. US Presidential Debate and what is really important to people

... "Republican" meant as a hegemonic power, rather than all, or any particular, Republican voters.
  2. Craving

Thanks Stosh yes ..my own brief interpretation, based on my translation.
  3. US Presidential Debate and what is really important to people

What exactly happens to someone in the U.S. who does not have health care and suddenly comes down with a disease requiring lots of treatment. For example, 25 years later when everybody realizes the latent dangers of pollution and artificial ingredients? Are they not stuck with a $100,000+ bill? Doesn't it seem worth the extra 2% or whatever tax, to know that you can actually afford to survive the onset of something like that? It's like a small entry chip at a poker game, you might lose it, but don't you think that's worth the risk? Is this not a gamble that it would be a gamble not to enter? I feel like there is a Republican "boy's club" of "real men do things this way" attitude which manages to bypass any reflection on the reality of what they are not talking about, especially towards collective, inclusive, politics, or considering that everybody needs to mow the lawn if they want to live in the the same house. I hope the Republican party will start to get wise to this fallacy phallically obsessed hypocrisy so their good politics can be made use of.
  4. Craving

Interesting discussion and posts. An enjoyable read. I've isolated the above as I think this is central to both the question and perhaps some sort of answer. It is DDJ Chapter 1 in a nutshell, more or less. "the Sages remain without desire and so they are able to see The Beauty(miao), while others' desires lead them to define The Beauty 妙, and thus they lose true perception of it." The moment, Miao, Mystery, The Beauty, "Thusness", quality. What is it we're after? The paradox of asking this question is like 33.333333333333333333.. lol..
  5. Could someone explain the Buddhist belief system to me?

Not that I am any master of Buddhist philosophy, however, to anyone asking if they can be Buddhist and believe in God, I would say "yes" however your view of "God" might also be integrated into Buddhist notions of reality, in that God may not be permanent, even if God exists as long as this universe, or as long as consciousness exists, his ultimate nature is still "Buddha nature/Emptiness." If your notion of God, or your religion's notion of God, does not work with this then I guess you have more searching to do. Anyway, just as the Buddha said, "figure it out for yourself. Don't believe or disbelieve anything just because someone tells you to."
  6. US Presidential Debate and what is really important to people

Here is an article by a Forbes writer about the monetary connections between the voting machine company and Romney http://www.forbes.co...uses-concern/3/ See the Update part-way down for more detailed info. Basically the there have been numerous contributions to Romney's campaign by people at the top of the companies involved. Also: http://www.weeklysta...any_657183.html "Solamere Capital, an investment fund founded and run by Tagg Romney, is a financial partner with HIG Capital, a private equity firm that manages a whole range of investments. HIG also invests in Hart Intercivic, a polling machine company that operates machines at polling places in Hamilton County, Ohio. But Solamere does not have any financial interest in Hart, a spokesman for Solamere tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD." The insecurity of these machines is basically of epic proportions for people who understand e-security. Here's an HBO horror movie about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVTXbARGXso
  7. How many people practice Taoism to gain supernatural powers?

What is natural? What is normal? Is super-normal supernatural? What about anger? Fear? Desire for status and prestige? What is the nothingness of nothing..?(.. joke...)
  8. Siddha Bognathar

An interesting footnote in the Hui Ming Jing, written by Liu Huayang, part namesake of the Wu-Liu Pai school of Taoism (the same school of Zhao Bichen, author of "Taoist Yoga"). In the preface to this text, written in 1795, it is said: "How could one think that Huayang is inferior to the disciple of the Buddha, Kasyapa, who lived in the world seven hundred years before he met the World-Honored One, or to the monk Baozhang, who lived in the world one thousand seven hundred and twelve years before he met Boddhidharma?" The footnote states: "Baozhang Heshang, an Indian monk said to arrive in China between the Wei (220-265 CE) and Jin (265 - 420 CE) dynasties, who is then said to have died in 675 CE" Seems this may refer to a character from Journey to the West, but it also seems to line up with the fantastic histories of Bogar: http://palani.org/bhogar-biography.htm#.UIhE01FJosA

  11. former thread on a Confucian classic

I have moved this topic to my personal practice discussion.
  12. former thread on a Confucian classic

Okay, now that the thread has been moved if you would like to discuss this 樂 means harmony, music, happiness, and other such things 間 means space, empty space, the space between things Together they could mean various things, of which you can quite easily surmise on your own, being such a master of Classical Chinese. You have attempted to correct me with your bold derisive style every time I talk about Classical Chinese characters, yet every time, after long and arduous discussion with you and your overly fixed ways of understanding, I eventually realize that I was right in the first place. As I see you would like to go through this exercise again, I have moved the thread so as not to bring such discussion into it. If my communication style seems strong right now, consider your actions here. I started a topic on a very pure and inspiring text, and the first comment on it is none other than you starting a Chinese language battle with me in an attempt to once again prove your superiority in this field, likely to end, as usual, with you being wrong, after much of your bold and derisive "you don't know shit because you don't know (the few arbitrary rules of) Chinese Classical grammar (that I do)." Sorry Chi Dragon, but that is not a suitable conversation to start off with in this thread, and if you or yiming want to attack me for not being Chinese, writing Chinese, or acting Chinese enough, then start a new thread next time. As this thread has already been destroyed by this topic of conversation, go ahead and dust it up as you so wanted to do. Prove to me once again, oh great Classical Chinese master, that your claim to grammatical superiority is not all you think it is. Congratulations, your might has already destroyed the topic and thread. Now, will it destroy my use of these characters? No, it won't.. But congratulations anyways.
  13. former thread on a Confucian classic

It's meaning does not require your understanding. Please stay on topic.
  14. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

fyi, I didn't mean to push on the 夫=man thing, just wondering how you would say 唯 works here. I'm satisfied with the above post though.. thanks for your time Chi Dragon.
  15. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

Okay, that makes sense as to why Henricks translated as "4. It is only because he cannot be known 5. That therefore were I forced to describe him I'd say:" tnx.
  16. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

Not sure I get you right.. because it sounds like then it would say "they alone do not comprehend" but they were those who were "able to see the subtle and mysterious through their deep intelligence"
  17. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

So, more language lessons.. what would you say 唯 means in 夫唯不可識, 夫唯不可志 Which man夫 alone(only)唯 cannot comprehend fyi, "man alone" is sort of an older literary style of saying "man only."
  18. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

.. oh yeah, whoops. I looked at these before and then went back, mistakenly thinking "虎 tiger" was where I read bravery. Okay, but I'm not far off still.. Again, not far off right? Do you see what I mean though, that one can pretty much determine the usages here by the context alone? btw, I see what you mean better here. questions stand hwv..
  19. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

I agree with this, and also that he is more than likely saying this in the characters. Even if they have a different "literal" meaning according to the usage of the day, it seems to me the more I pay attention to the Etymologies the more I get of the subtle lessons that one can perceive even through the "proper" translation. This may change, but so far it seems 9 times out of 10. I really suspect that the writers were so adept at writing and aware of every influence in their surroundings that they would have been aware of these overtones and kept them in line with their intended meaning. To each their own, but, I feel like I'm getting more out of it by reading it this way, with some flexibility that it does not always work this way.. Nonetheless, it's certainly helpful to know what the usage and grammar of the day was when reading texts from those eras. edit: typos
  20. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

I find in these sentences that I get basically the same meaning translating it as "therefore/So" or as "men" or as a pronoun. It doesn't seem to mislead too much one way or the other, imo.
  21. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

Interesting, thanks. Do you have any other example references where it is used like this? The example at the link seemed like it referred to "the general." I see at the Etymology site it also says that it can be a particle, but knowing when it's a particle, when it's a pronoun, or literally "man" seems to be all in context. I don't see how it being at the beginning or end of a sentence necessarily means it's a particle when the context seems to mean "he, that, or man." Is there any other rule(s) to it?
  22. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

Can I ask you how you know, in this case, that it means "therefore"?
  23. [TTC Study] Chapter 15 of the Tao Teh Ching

Some more translation wankery from me: what do you guys think of the line: 04 夫唯不可識, 夫唯不可志 Which man夫 alone唯 cannot comprehend Was he saying that animals can comprehend this depth which man cannot? That man is the most limited in understanding the mysterious depths?
  24. [TTC Study] Chapter 14 of the Tao Teh Ching

So many contradictions, so little time. All I will say, is that the Dao De Jing was written in China because people in China needed to hear it, as does the entire world. Most of the other religions seem to date back to the cultural progressions of Khemet/Ancient Egypt which said many things similar to the philosophies of the I Ching, Nei Jia, and Dao De Jing. It is not just Chinese who had such teachers. The Dao De Jing, in part, was written to show people how to live and work collectively towards harmony and prosperity. How would racism and cultural superiority help you in this endeavour?
  25. [TTC Study] Chapter 14 of the Tao Teh Ching

Assuming that story to be true, I don't think God chose your parents to give birth to his son. Your level of delusion seems to be coming out of the woodwork. So you fashion yourself an expert on the Dao De Jing and your not even familiar with the basic principle of Balance, and how it fills the holes and levels the mounds, favours the humble and humiliates the proud. Perhaps if your knowledge about it went past memorizing one chapter because you like the way it sounds (as you said in "learning Chinese forum") you would know how fundamental a principle this is to the Dao De Jing. You have much to learn, and it seems your misplaced pride will have to be leveled before that happens. WOW! You really don't know ANYTHING ! You really think the Jewish people were only ones who brought the issue of racism to the West? Everyone from the Native, to the Irish, to the Italians, the Polish, the Hungarian, the African, AND the Chinese and the Japanese fought against the mindless hatred of racism. And this struggle goes back to ancient history all around the world where countries invaded other countries, justifying their carnage on a false myth of racial superiority. This includes even the English telling themselves that they were racial superior to the Irish and Scottish. Thank you for making it even more obvious though that you really do not belong on this forum where we have all different races. You'd better run before we mix in with your family heritage! No suffering based on racism in China? You probably better try to ask yourself this question at least one more time. The fact that you are not immediately aware of this is a pitiful reflection of how much you know about your own country, its various people and their struggles today and throughout history. Yeah, I'll trust somebody's opinion on that who has at least read the text maybe... Thanks.... What a joke. Dude, get out of here. The only purpose you would serve to hang around is amuse everyone by the depth of your ignorance. Hearing you is like watching National Geographic - looking at animals that you almost forgot existed, and seeing how they act in real life. However, this is not the place for you to run your crap all over the place. If you have any benefit to gain from this forum, it is certainly not going to be done any more by showing us how ignorant you are. This has already been done more than adequately.
