The Art of War
dawei replied to woodcarver's topic in Miscellaneous Daoist Texts & Daoist Biographies
I'm actually quite good at ping pong.. self-taught since about 12 years old. I always surprise chinese in china when I go there and play... many funny stories... but truth be told, I only play when I go there in the last 8 years. It just comes back to me once the paddle is in my hand. When I was at an Air Force base for a while (too many years ago), I got to meet the Army 3rd battalion champion ping pong player. We would play all the time and I would subtlety beg him to teach me... he would refuse... but by playing I would test him. One day, I finally shared with him what I had learned while playing with him and some strategy, etc. He basically said, "What you see is only what you see. When I play [competitively], the point must be over in 2-3 hits otherwise it is worthless hitting".... worthless hitting.... like he was doing with me all those months -
I think over the years, I've had about 10 ways of trying to explain it... here goes number 11 It's not just without desires or ego; it's that Wu Wei is the desire or ego; there is no separation between them. There is a kind of attuned sense of Oneness... not just going with the flow but you are the flow.

Here is the supported file types: gif, jpeg, jpg, png The maximum size is: 1200 x 1600. The system will supposedly resize if greater than this... but there is another setting suggesting it will automatically resize to a value if given (it is given as 620). I thought there was a maximum storage size but can't find that now. I will say that each member has a maximum allotment (file space reserved for each) and that alone would make me recommend to folks to try and link to a picture rather than upload one. if one wants to upload it, then as Marblehead suggests, do a few techniques to try and get a reasonable size first.

This is my opinion and I only quickly scanned some posts.... Trying to suggest a teacher is necessary is like an argument for god... The lost will require a leader but the open connection can find there is no separation. If you want to climb a ladder (go step by step)... get a teacher; You will be taught how to travel through many levels. The earliest stories show Dao was naturally understood and followed. When Dao loses internal and direct communication, teachers (shamans of old) arise among villages and communities to show the 'way' and be an intercessor between heaven and earth. It is interesting to note that most ancients have some sort of transmission occur but they get it at the end of their journey. There is always a direct communication available between heaven and earth within each person but that 'way' gets lost through life influences. This is just my experience. In most cases, a path via a teacher is a solid path. If one can realize their direct connection they can get it more like the ancient way; later find that final help to connect. Some are born with the direct connection and perception of it which would be the natural way most of us are just trying to reclaim. The Great Way is always there, in every breath, in every view, in every sound, in every feeling. What I have found is that this is a manifest realization and half of the equation of connecting heaven and earth. The goal isn't so much connecting with heaven or connecting heaven and earth... it is a full realization of the Great Way as an embodiment... that there is simply no separation and nothing to connect to.

Why do we enjoy sex without the intent to reproduce?
dawei replied to Arya's topic in General Discussion
Which does any animal come to recognize first (sex or reproduction)? I think there is a natural answer to the unbalanced question -
My understanding was that this was fixed yesterday. I'd try to clear cache, cookies, etc.

FYI: "Wanderer" is already taken. You can check a name by doing a search on "Members".

To be honest, I also have not seen this among daoist literature... but I recently came across "The Tibetan Yogas Of Dream And Sleep"... I can't recommend it as I have not read it yet but I can at least mention it in case you want to find it. I don't think one "enters the kingdom" , except in their own interpretation of events (time). The last barrier is a state but IMO, we can 'borrow' from states even though we're not in that state... because the most important aspect is: Nothing Separates Us. As I explore this, at times I am floating above and getting detached from it. As I get into universal consciousness, I travel past time and space, as it collapses (no separation). Sometimes it collapses on 'me'.

We are all different. What 'tone', feeling or attitude we have will differ. I'm not a morning person... If I was a part of an experiment to test when folks like to wake up, I'd be close to 12/noon. When I was in Marine boot camp, they had some difference about such ideas... and most jobs do too. My first thought each morning? "Can I have 10 more minutes...". And that repeats itself about 100 times as I shift from sleepy-awake to sleepy-slumber. My wife is acutely aware of my slothful morning attitude... and she has found ways to even get me up at 8am to go for a morning swim by talking softly, massaging my back to wake me up and allowing me to decline in the end... which by the time the muscles open their muscle eyes, I have shifted into my normal 'athletic' mode of "let's get'r done". Then we swim... and by 9:30am, I am so fully energized that I feel like I could now even run a marathon... Seize the Day; my motor is finely tuned for the day... Compare a day where I don't get up... slothfully delay my departure from the bed... a foggy remembrance that there is coffee in this existence which might make this all go away... and eggs... got to eat some eggs.... oh, the time? already 11am... crap... Nice topic. The goal is 'know thyself'. And hopefully you have a little help along the way

I have set the last gender option word to "Undisclosed"... Added: Later thought maybe "Not Specified" sounds more like the person simply left the field alone, although you'd have to pick it... This discussion orginated here: Let's reduce sexism and genderism on tdb

You had me at this I do follow your point but I tend towards the idea as Fate suggests below... and then he pulls a 'you' by saying "what is not Tao" I would think of it as nested dolls... which fits with my theories over the years of viewing items like ripples in a pond where the last outermost one is boundless. Dao occupies the boundless 'Way' and once manifestation arises, we get the bounded 'Ways'. The more we perceive within the inner realms (ripples, nested dolls), the more we're following the [bound] Ways of Man... not completely free in a Dao sense. Enjoy this stuff... and the topic of Te has found its Way into it too...

Hi Sean, A wonderful and welcomed offer I assume you want to establish the study here? As this sounds more 'system/master' related than just about a book, then this Daoist Discussion sub-forum seems most appropriate: Systems and Teachers Of I wanted to extend the "Owner's Permission" on this area anyways... so you can just request the Permissions here: How To Request Owner's Permissions That would give you the ability to control the posts a little bit by hiding off-topic, trolling, combative comments. Another alternative is that we create a Personal Practice Discussion in your name. In this case, you would automatically get the kind of owner controls I mentioned by default.

After 39 posts, I can't say I've learned anything about Jung and eastern thought... well, except a link to a 227 page PDF. I've wondered about Jung myself and so why not just discuss the person and his ideas on eastern thought. I found these as a start: article: The Difference Between Eastern and Western Thinking by C.G. Jung Youtube: Alan Watts - A Critique of Carl Jung, Seeing Through the Game article: How Indian Philosophy Influenced Jung Background: Jung identified four major archetypes (youtube) I've not watched any of these... but found them in less than 5 minutes to share

To be fair, I split this out of another topic... so this discussion was not started with a concrete idea and title... I simply gave it this name based on what was said up to the point of splitting it off. So your comment is valid and your raising the idea of 'where' seems like you can share more

"Attainment of knowledge" is not enough, IMO... even if one comes to know inner=outer, that is still just knowing. There is a barrier at work (and you've described your understanding and how it reveals itself) which creates a divide, a dichotomy. Knowing can be a barrier. There are a few ways in how I think of it. 1. For most, this barrier starts off as simply a mirror and forms their understanding in terms of "I" (and collective selves reflected as life). 2. For some, there is an intellectual/philosophical understanding that the barrier is not reflecting but dividing and 'something' is on the other side. This separation is both intriguing and injurious. But it tends to lead folks towards a 'search' or 'journey'. 3. For a few, the barrier starts to be translucent/transparent. It could come in dreams or visions or as a 'knowing/feeling'. 4. For a very few, the barrier no longer exists. They 'realize' the Oneness aspect of the two sides in a way that the previous stages hinted at. 5. For even fewer, there never was a barrier. I don't mean they skipped straight here but they break outside of the last barrier of 'time'. When I think of the 'Kingdom', I keep in mind the various ways it was mentioned: Kingdom of God; of Heaven; of Christ and God. At times, it seems to suggest separation and thus one needs to attain or wait for its arrival... and at other times there are expressions which show it is beyond a literal location, person, or even time. The gospels, IMO, are too much like school children running around on the playground; they have little concept of the Kingdom outside of the Old Testament. Law vs Grace spins their minds. I personally prefer Paul's writings as he truly personifies 'I was blind but now I see'. Rom 14:17: for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. So now we have the 'Kingdom' as a reference to God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit... This should be a clue that it is not just a location, person, or time. Reformed theology (which I was most attracted to back in the day) held to a more abstract than concrete approach; The kingdom is here now, and yet not here now. I prefer to just focus on the former idea. Two verses which always struck me profoundly are: Col 1:27: The mystery... Christ in You Gal 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me And I used to ponder: How can Christ be "in you" now, when he is already dead? and how can you be "crucified with Christ" when that is also a past event? The key for me was to get outside of inserting 'time' when asking such questions. That also got me past the idea that I was a part of the kingdom... which would suggest it is pieces of this and that. It is not about material things but its light kind of manifests as such. Where is the kingdom? Everywhere and nowhere.

What if we let go of consciousness? If 10 people see the same thing you ask them to look at, what/whose reality are they looking at? I don't mind so much an individual consciousness but you can't seem to get to a universal one (?)
