Yes... that is what I generally meant by association. The valley has other references to being female... So it might be trying to say: Know the male but hold to the female [principle] Know the stream but hold to the valley waters [as the source]

The scribal error is possible given that MWD-A has 谿 (creek) and MWD-B has 雞 (fowl)... but something feels out of kilter with these substitutions away from creek and valley stream when the latter two cast very similar pictures. What interests me is another issue and whether it provides any clue: Why was the original order of the three line sets as found in the MWD-A, MWD-B, and Beida changed in later versions? Original order: Creek, Stream, Order/model/cosmograph Received order: Creek, Order/model/cosmograph, Stream I wonder if the original order is supposed to follow line 1: Male > Female Creek > Stream > Order/model cosmograph Meaning: Male = Creek Female = Stream (same character used in ch. 6 for female=valley stream) Where the last line set is ordering of all the above.

I was really trying to see if that is your meaning for split / harm? In regards to the country or something else?
-
I like this... but does not divide or harm [the country]? Ties back to Tian Xia...

Tian Xia (天下) While there is a bit of political soverignty, I would go with All-under-Heaven... or 'of the world'

In the southern area of Chu, which was regarded as 'barbarians'.... they had the most shamanistic culture... and there is art attesting to alien figures. -

There is something to be said for a spectrum scale... and to have a like without a dislike... seems to elicit a 'dislike' But ultimately, what does a group have as a goal? I think we can accept dislikes in posting and accept an additional like in buttons. The latter allows you to smile and just click a button without posting. It is a kind of posting, if you will. If your disagreeing is strong enough, then post your position. Maybe it is not completely fair but where is fair written in the heavens? Let's not worry so much about a rating scale... let's go more with the flow of what is there... -
Your post is a fascinating discovery... I don't disagree with finding similar passages and considering if the phrase should be applied else where. I first want to point out that 是以聖人抱一為天下式 makes sense, if one understands 式. This is the cosmograph which Sarah Allen wrote much about and tied the Guodian Tai Yi Sheng Shui. And see TDB topic. But I also found that the Beida version of the Dao De Jing has this: 為天下武 為天下武 恒德不貣 武 - Wu: military So a substitute to 牧 feels a little forceful... however brilliant the discovery. My gut feeling is this: 1. The meaning was forgotten and muddled 2. The version we have is more legalist and concerned with governers and rulers. IT is a Huang-Lao interpretation of how to rule a country.

Don't know what to say right now. Others can post their browser issues but I've not heard any recently. What approximate date did this start?
-
As that was in the WWW area, I would just expect anything started there is likely Owner Permissions... I'd just as soon not burden an OP with too many rules but if this really gets too confusing then it may be needed. I would say it is optional but is a good idea. I asked about the graphics again, so I'm hoping we'll get something soon.
-
Nothing will get moved... the permission will 'move' to the existing area... but for now, it is unfortunately very unclear who is starting a thread with or without the permissions.
-
I don't understand your questions. Anyone who starts a thread is the "Original Poster", aka OP in many uses. What we have done here is to give the OP, Owner of a topic, higher level permissions. I have choosen to call it Owner Permissions. It just means that wherever the Owner Permissions are extended, those areas have higher lever permissions *possible*... meaning, if someone received those permissions. I have asked Sean to create a graphic which will attach to a member with the Owner Permissions so people will know.

Agreed but nice example. I assume one has to be a member logged in to see the buttons but it is easy enough to envision. I have documented this idea for Sean and even researched it enough to see that it is actually just a button graphic which could technically be replaced with any graphic (shape, words). -

Opposed to expansion of thread owner control to general forum...
dawei replied to Jeff's topic in The Rabbit Hole
It may *seem* like an additional layer but I think the theory is that the Admin/Mod layer should diminish in use and role. Thread owners don't need to report something, if they feel the posting is off-topic, trolling, etc... they can remove it. Its possible some let stuff go off-topic too long and then want staff to split it out. We'll just have to see. I don't think the goal is to eliminate arguments and disagreements but rather they get refined in the end. You can argue and disagree with a point but if its not done in a respectful way, or done as heckling, or done as simply rude, the topic starter can remove it. If topic starters are in fact simply abusing the use of such power, who's going to post in their topics anymore? So it seems you can cut up posts but you'll end up cutting off your own head if you keep doing it. -

Seems similar to states which banned radar detectors... -
The Buddhist Sub-Forum and Buddhist Textual Studies area are setup with the "Anarchist" group which has Owner Permissions.

Opposed to expansion of thread owner control to general forum...
dawei replied to Jeff's topic in The Rabbit Hole
There was an article section for some time... it was a home for some... Sean did a massive consolidation after I tried to expand out a few new areas... He dumped articles and moves the threads, and merged several of the Forum/Tech areas into one area, got rid of a few other areas... Expansion-Contraction-Expansion-Contraction... this seems to be the way so far. -
The Next Stage in Rollout will be that the Buddhist Sub-forum will have the Owner Permissions, starting tomorrow. See the new Forum: Wéi Wú Wéi - 為無為 Please read BOTH Pinned Topics to gain an understanding of the expectations of participation and registering for higher level permissions to start and oversee topics**. ** If you have already received the Owner Permissions for WWW, there is no further request for the Buddhist Sub-forum area.

That would definitely be an option. Usually it is Pitted because it may just be too much work for the staff to split it... but I'd like us splitting more instead of moving all posts. Yea... back to reality
-
But the fact is, every forum area is permanent in the sense that most topics are expected to remain permanently where the start... Even the Pit/Chaos has a place we can remove threads to... The Abyss. I would instead focus on the member... free to wander among the forum... the topics/posts are simply left around here and there. Some, like the ancestors, go to their grave where folks can continue to leave offerings if they want...

I need to read more of these posts compass and square is an allusion to Fuxi and Nuwa... The most famous pictures are of them facing each other... but sometimes they woke up on the wrong side of the bed and turned away
