  1. ~~~ ADMIN INFO ~~~ This area will not be visible to the public for reading therefore members will need to be signed in to read topics. As well, internet search bots will not be able to pickup these topics and re-direct the public here nor become part of a public record of our discussion on controversial issues. The expected topics include politics and controversial issues. The expectation is that these topics would be potentially of interest for others to discuss. As a discussion sub-forum of topics that will likely have opposing views, there should be some words put to the first post in order to start a discussion. This is NOT the place to be a dumping ground of topics, videos or pictures that just appear to be spam or propaganda of controversial ideas. It is intended to be of interest to people wanting to use The Dao Bums as place to discuss challenging views but not to promote ideological or conspiracy points of view. If history has shown a topic to be already in the Pit, any continuation would be expected in that thread, not in a new one. If there is a pattern of a member(s) wanting to start topics with no words and/or they consistently get no interaction, or negative interaction, we might need to consider whether this is just too disruptive a tactic and not really discussion oriented nor intended. In such cases, the threads could end up in the PIT/Chaos, warnings could be issued, or a member can lose access to this area, or some action can be taken. While forum rules apply, the hope is the staff is not monitoring this area that much and doesn't need to be asked to intervene. As in all forum areas, the Report feature can be used but we would highly recommend that those who are not able to easily discuss challenging topics or accept some criticism of the topic should just not participate. We would like to see this as a place that welcomes the kinds of topics we have gotten in the past but we're not condoning a marked increase in such topics. This simply represents a better place than Off-topic and the PIT/Chaos.
  2. Tin Yat Dao Sect

I've seen him at more than one website over the years to share his 'business' offerings. I've been suspicious of his ghost / possession stuff and his ability (at his level) to understand and handle this properly (or at all). I've seen / found entities in others and have wondered what is it that causes such things; are such folks just vulnerable, or have created an atmosphere to attract such things ? But I have serious doubts he understands the spectrum of spirit/beings/entities/deities that 'visit' folks or even may stick around. If he thinks he is going to blast a deity away, then I would suspect him even more. Reminds me of the childhood saying we had about "I'm rubber and you're glue...". Although I don't think it is just about being rubber; one can be very clear and thus, nothing sticks too.
  3. My work out is hand cranking this 2 lb piece of plastic grinder ! We've got a freezer too... but for meat we bought on sale hummus... healthy in moderation celery.. lower blood pressure Turmeric... good anti-inflammatory.. and liver stuff... but use black pepper to help it absorb as it doesn't so easily. Cayenne... the more the better... blood pressure.. spicy means opens the heart...
  4. now the PM Publix is great for meat quality but not price... Walmart Salmon is good... Publix seafood goes on good sales and focus on buy 1 , get 1 on anything there. That's our focus. That's why we use 3 others for smaller produce or stuff on sale. We like to go about 3-4 times a week and spend a little and go out together and get some air. I know we're comparing FL prices... but I'd never buy Walmart (we used to buy their ground pork but we bought a meat grinder for $30 ... I bought a t-bone and grounded it up to a burger ! ). Sam's is bulk stuff but we never buy bulk stuff.. eat almost nothing from a box or can... What we buy we cook within a few days... We did buy a convention cooker form Sam's on a friends card and it make the best chicken wings..when we can buy it at .49 cents a pound in a 10 lb bag... we like to go out together 3-4 times a week to shop
  5. Well... at some point, you have to decide who can do better... your 401K or you... and.. who has more time to deal with it too! Also, are you are getting a company contribution... and even more (ie: profit sharing)... Is it being invested in something while it sits where ever it sits? .. who controls that, can you set the investment? Lots of issues and angles. I personally, now feel, I have more in my 401K than I want because it is not liquid to do something (ie: buy that next house), and the investment options are restrictive to what the company selected as the 401 Broker... but I get a fair amount of company contribution and profit sharing... so I accept that there is a 'safe' nest egg building up there. We own two places now and that is another kind of investment. We will likely sell one to get to that next house we want. Never say, I can't save that kind of money... you can. It may take some 'sacrifice' and time to learn it... like drop cable TV! Waste of money. I'll tell you where to watch all the cable you want for free; watch movies and tv shows for free... Reduce your cell phone bill too! My wife pays $20 unlimited a month and free calls to china. You have to look for the deals. Like groceries... we almost never buy unless it is 'buy 1 get 1'... or the smaller place where the is good quality and low price. We shop 4 places a week. We wait almost one year to get pancake mix at that deal...so we buy 12 boxes to last a year !
  6. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 1

Trodden does work as 'Way' means path... ergo, to walk the path [of the Great Way]. So in the opening lines, it is juxtaposed with the idea that as a name (whether spoken or trodden), it is not the eternal Way/Dao. I like the logical unfolding of Spoken because 'Ke Dao' means spoken and then the second line reminds us that 'names' are not eternal. Later, we get manifest (world of names) and mystery/primordial (without names). But I'm not trying to dissuade embracing Trodden but hope to help deepen one's choice on some level.
  7. Due to our change in minimum posts to 5, I have setup your PPD here: https://www.thedaobums.com/forum/569-abzu/ You can look at some others out there but is generally open to the discretion of the 'owner'. Given it's title, some will use it like a blog or diaries on their practices but explore its use as you want. You have the ability to control the threads as explained here... it is a little dated so you can let me know if something doesn't work or you want some clarification: https://www.thedaobums.com/topic/35280-moderating-your-own-ppd/
  8. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 76

at some level, it may be a difference without a distinction... we are thinking beings... but I understand your point is more about flowing with it (being one with it) and SFH is saying you act like it (is being one with it). Glad to see the discussion.
  9. Climate Change

Not implying that at all... I've mentioned variables and mankind is one for sure.
  10. Climate Change

I generally don't watch anything over 10 minutes... so I hope you can just summarize the 'dimming' idea. That flights stopped was read as a drop in temperature can be a real data observation but dosen't mean we know all the cauality of the interactions... meaning, if I were to take you're idea too seriously, then if we stop all flights forever, we would plunge into global cooling ? So, that there was some weather observation doesn't mean we can say we should ban flying. If you push against a car in park and then set it in neutral, it moves more. How do we know if the change of a variable (flights) isn't just the other variable still trying to push at the level they were previously conditioned.
  11. Climate Change

I would agree that we can cite observation and data, as change... but I'm not yet sold on is whether it is part of a historical pattern of climate change that ebbs and flows over 10s of thousands or 100 of thousands of years. One can kind of deny the trends as man contributed and desctructive, yet one should still be of a mind that improving how we are using energy should not be denied. So, I do agree doing something is better than nothing. I just think the argument to do it for the sake of climate change is not going to sell well to some. Let's embrace and harness technology to improve life and that should be a contribution to any role of man contributed climate change. I think most people in the US just don't care because of being spoiled by the technology that got us where we are...so reasonable minds need to persist in seeing where we can improve our use of energy.
  12. Climate Change

I'm no climate changer advocate... as I've stated, global cycles exists and human population by the law of numbers should mean we'll contribute than say 2,000 years ago. I'm not going to argue against that. What I do simply agree with is we should continue to make better use of technology and reduce our emissions however possible. Alternate energy seems a good idea. Electric cars is something I'm on the fence about as there is the problem of disposing of the batteries... but on the surface it seems reasonable to look into... but GM is killing themselves to think they can retrofit themselves into an electric car maker too fast.
  13. I don't know who I am

That sounds like the existentialist, Sarte.. we are always becoming... The mind likes such becomings...
  14. Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is a prolific practitioner, engineer by training, and mentioned here widely... he has so many publications that it can be dizzying as to know what to even read. But as to his Qigong and Taiji focus, I have tested several of his ideas and found they to be well founded. For example, in one of his early writings, he tells of a form that if done correctly will result in Qi flowing through the lip ( I forget exactly now but I tested it and found it true). I tried Taiji because an online friend suggested that Qigong is much better to do as Taiji takes too much time to master... That seemed a challenge on some level... but given a good master and a good grasp of energy (I was practicing medical qigong at the time), I could feel the course of energy while doing Taiji... it did not take decades to feel as he claimed; it took a week or so. Taiji, from my limited experience, relies on energy pressure differential. Energy naturally flows from high to low pressure areas; one can feel this in Taiji movements. Is energy directing the mind to think as such, or it is the mind directing the energy ? IMO, the mistake is to rely on the mind instead of the energy...let and feel the energy arise and flow and just observe it's symphony.
  15. Story of Atlantis Part 1 - Ice Age and Deluge

I recall Atlantis has been seen by some, but not me. But I'd be willing to be part of a group to try and find it again. I'm just not willing to discuss it so openly.
  16. the wall, part of trumps insanity

I appreciate the point you are making but EVERY president of the last 20 years has remarked to build it further... It seems that more recently the connection to illegal immigration and drugs became more a campaign promise than in the past and it should not be held against a politican to try and fulfill their campaign promise which may of helped them get elected. I'm for a smart approach to it which can include technology, terrain enhanced assistance, etc. I've said somewhere, we're only at 30% covered on the border which is like trying to hold water with a sieve. I'd like to see it finished so we can move on to better border security ideas.
  17. Climate Change

That seems a reasonable and logical idea except it would only work in say China where the central government would demand something and it would be implemented as ordered. It seems the US is naively fascinated with alternative energy while never really embracing it in a national application... seems our market economy and profit driven corporations don't like to invest in things that don't have any ROI in a quick and yet long term pace. I recall reading about Polar Bear hair as an enhancement to solar collection back in the 1980s... Where are we since then with that? I would actually be for such alternate energy sources; why don't builders just start installing solar panels and more energy efficient appliances instead of making them premium price markups to buyer ? Oh yea... economy and corporation devils doing their duty...
  18. The US has a similar version of this story going on... but there is debate whether she was a legal citizen in the first place... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/20/isis-us-woman-alabama-no-return-mike-pompeo
  19. Is anyone actually commenting on Navratilova's comments? This took an odd detour to me. Maybe this should of been merged into the existing thread on the trans sports competition discussion. I agree with Navratilova's comments and it seems outrage to accuse her of trans-phobic comments when she is a star athlete who understands the trenches of sports and sexuality. I applaud her for voicing her opinion but it is very sad when folks used your freedom of speech against you when it was a movement you were a huge part of 'coming out'.
  20. meat eater to vegetarian

I never understood forcing one's body to something it did not first move in a direction of... what is your blood type and what foods are most compatible with that ? But, I think it is good to drop certain fatty foods to get your body to reset to what it should have or need... so I guess I just made an exception to my first point. Recently, my blood pressure shot up due to a reaction to something... and that caused me to research blood pressure foods.. and I was surprised to find beets were something I instantly loved... Pissing red was a bit strange though I love meat, as a Blood type O... but I have naturally slowed down that for seafood instead. Eggs are my main stay. If I don't eat eggs in the morning, I feel less then empowered... so sometimes I'll eat them later in the day if I skipped them. So I recognize, my body likes protein or has been conditioned for that... who knows... but it seems to smile more when I eat some.
  21. Climate Change

This was a pretty challenging thread to wade through with all the posts info... I actually appreciate all the positions and comments but it leaves the original post incoherent at best. I'm not sold on the 'data' because how many ice ages have we had,, last one was 11,000 bc, yes ? And how many warmings or extinctions, and are we out of the chance of no more ? Highly doubt that. The celestial cycles turn; man, as a population will logical input more over the years into the atmosphere (and biosphere, to give a nod to Ralis points). The poles may be affected more than other areas and that seems an interesting localization problem to study. I'm no green earth type; I don't try to save the whales, sea lions, trees, CO2, etc... I just live according to a drum beat I feel is there, like a beacon of Light... Looking back on my life, over the last 30+ years, I have moved more and more away from meat... but more and more to seafood. Does it really help to shift the meat one eats ? I eat less fat stuff, so buying less of it overall. I'm not going to put the cake industry out of business but I'm not interested in such indulgences. According to the step-daughter, I save water because I rarely shower without my wife... naivety at its best. I don't like to use any more electricity than needed.. not to save or conserve, just seems why waste something... like wasting my time on something. I refuse to buy cable TV... not because of cost... one can get most of it free online.. most just don't know it. I bought a new car this year; first time in my life I bought a new car... I realized I could upgrade an old car of 20 miles per gallon to 35... when I drive, I coast a lot.... why waste gas. We buy gas whenever it is lower cost. I'm not sure what that means except we save money. We grow some foods which is challenging at a development where they monitor what you put outside... we plan to get a house with a yard where we can grow lots of our own food... not compelling reason except to avoide all the chemical middle men. We rarely eat out, so we are not typically trying to support local commerce and business; we just do what we really feel we need to do or want to do based on some fun feeling. As I said, I'm no greenie weenie... I just sense what seems to make sense to do... for me. I don't ask another to do as I do.
  22. the wall, part of trumps insanity

We certainly can't blame Trump for the wall... the history and voting on it is easy to find. He just wants to try and finish it, which will happen one of these days over the next 100 years. The fact is, the sooner the better for several reasons, paramount would be costs and getting the problem under control so newer tactics can be decided on. I'm not see much new in the charts as folks have talked about the decline... I think the caravans compound a major problem of resources. Both Bush's, Clinton and Obama send troops to the border, McCain pleaded for more troops and money as the border had 'greatly detoriated' adding that Congress needed to repeal the 2008 human trafficking law. โ€œThe message has to be, โ€˜If you cross our border illegally, you will be returned immediately,' โ€ he said. Members were calling on Obama to do something... Other members : โ€œThe reason we are witnessing the surge of unaccompanied alien children along our southwestern border is because the President and his Administration have refused to enforce existing immigration laws. Time and again, this President has chosen to pursue his own policies that are in direct contradiction with U.S. law. Iโ€™m calling on the President to obey the Rule of Law, and to quickly resolve the current situation at our southern border,โ€ Obama called it a 'crisis' and said, " Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the United States -- a dramatic increase," he said. "These children are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs." A few years earlier he said, "I strongly believe that we should take on, once and for all, the issue of illegal immigration. And I am prepared to work with Republicans and Democrats to protect our borders, enforce our laws and address the millions of undocumented workers who are now living in the shadows,"" The Washington post called it 'epic proportions'. The media as largely behind the idea of a 'crisis'. The Huffington Post said the humanitarian crisis was 'shocking' (and provided photos). NBC reported that flooding the border causes for the 'crisis'. there was no outrage when Obama said essentially the same thing that Trump has said. They helped in much need apprehensions and drug seizures. There is a long history of agreement that the border becomes a crisis situation requiring military assistance... this is proof enough that an incomplete wall is a problem. That we have to get the military to help in some form makes this an emergency as it means we don't have the man power to do the job in a normal fashion. We should plug the holes and move on to better border security ideas for the next generations.
  23. 1 ้“ๅŽŸ Daoyuan The origin of the Way

Maybe we should evaluate it in light of Shamanistic teaching ?
  24. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 1

Why is walked/trodden often used as well as spoken? Dao Ke Dao, Fei Chang Dao (Chang was a later substitute for Heng in the original; their is a taboo issue that an Emperor's name cannot be in texts, so Heng was replaced with Chang... thus Eternal-Heng was replaced with Constant-Chang... and Chang slowly took over the meaning of eternal. Dao [Dao], Ke Dao [Spoken Dao], Fei Chang Dao [Not constant/eternal Dao] Dao Ke [Dao spoken, manifest], Dao Fei [Dao no-thing], Chang/Heng Dao [constant/eternal Dao] Dao Ke Dao [Dao as a spoken Dao], Fei Chang/Heng Dao [not a constant/eternal Dao] Where ever you put the comma, (ancient texts had no comma breaks), it really says the same thing. The reason I prefer spoken against Trodden is that the later parts talk of two sides of Dao... Manifest (being) vs Mystery (non-being).
  25. I don't know who I am

Questioning, "who am I", with emphasis on "I" is a trick question that gets one stuck on duality stuff. If you answer, "I am the universe..." what sense do you get ? But you are still using "I"... so try to answer, "The Universe". What sense do you get? But you are still using the universe in a dualistic world meaning of concepts... Who am I?
