The Activity Tab has some changes, as well as the main Menu level: 1. I assume most cannot see the 'Clubs' item but staff can. 3. Activity: a. there was a 'search' but it's redundant to the main search that already exists at all times. So the Activity Search was removed. b. The Main Board Activity is essentially only the public forum areas, so Off-Grid, The Rabbit Hole, PPDs, and Hundun will not show up in this listing. For now, my reasoning is, if you want to see something new there, just go there. c. The How to Create a Customized Activity Stream is very useful. This will take you to this Thread: If you want to see ALL Activity across the entire board, just click on the Activity Tab itself. Use the sub-options as described above. Thanks to this thread and those who participated in these changes: https://www.thedaobums.com/topic/47938-the-dao-trumps/

some kind of refresh or reload may be needed but when folks re-login, it should show up now... when in doubt, clear cache !
-
Just realized I can set the Unread Content as 'default'... so now mine shows it. I think it should show for everyone unless you created a custom one as default.
-
There was a setting to make the new stream the 'default' and I just now turned that off... but I think unless one has created a custom default, aka. Karen's instructions then likely it still uses the new one. After turning that off, the new custom item still shows for me. If you don't see Unread Content as shown below, then follow Karen's instructions to re-instate it. Link to make the change:

Ok, finally got it. I don't use these features but I think we have provide some good info on how to customize and setup default streams. thanks
-
but you see it in my screen shot... so I'd like to hear if others also don't see Unread Content once you hover over Activity. Or does Karen's above step push it to being visible ?

The word is to know but in context 'understand' makes sense. Knowing Dao is not cognitive, that might be the student or academic. Knowing Dao is the inner heart sense. I could not pass up a point that this is like Jesus who said, "many are called but few are chosen".

Rather intense chapter... after many re-reads, I would recommend this: Read Hinton 5 times with a pause to let it sink in. Then read Flowing Hands 5 times with a pause to let it sink in.

ok, another one without comment.. here we go ! First line as noble offical, soldier, leader, he who, but we're not here to debate the exact word, as the meaning is the point. Upon re-reading a few times, this is a gem of a chapter ! Seems mostly about non-contention... but it could mean contention against our own mind or way too. It is a set of juxtapositions which feels a bit of Sunzi's art of war at times. This seems an interesting comparing: Making use of other's strength vs having insight into the ways of man. The former seeks seeks an understand of others, how we can use, employ or otherwise engage their ability. THis is a coach idea. The latter is an inner know of the ways of man in order to deal with people. So it is not a conformity but a reflection of the ways of Heaven that makes sense.. maybe of Dao is better.

This is one of the most mentioned but again, no takers.. so let's start it. The three Treasures ! While most are trying to translate, I find Flowing Hands says a direct point on the last very difficult of the three... why difficult ? Most who study the chinese are confronted with a very non parallel pattern of characters for the three traits 1. One word: Compassion, mercy, love 2. One word: Economy, frugality, thrift 3. Six words: Only Goddard is trying a single word, 'humility'. So while most try a direct translation, 'not to dare to be ahead of the world' (Chan) , Flowing Hands says, 'being at one with the Dao' Who would of thought that not to dare to be... is to be one with the Dao
-
So no takers yet, so I'll bite Ch'u Ta-Kao makes an insightful analogy about Dao and the world. Everyone else missed this. And he wrote that in 1904! But Flowing Hands spells it out in a deeper way to understand this. Without fuss... means both parts are playing within a loop, they know their part... interactive life members: above and below That man has taken the below position due to going against Dao.. thus has become the below position.

It may of taken six pages to get to a point that really made sense to me and you know we've made some changes. I just want to thank you for your persistence in making your point. Just don't assume I'll agree next time BTW: Sean (owner), immediately resonated with the point made and quickly stepped in to help find a solution

and you never will , like most of us
-
Ok, good to know. We have been playing with it. I think to use it, likely you have to get invited to one of them but I have not tested for a while as a regular bum.
-
I think for the non-newbie, that makes a lot of sense. The main grip, rightfully so, was that a newbie likely would just start with "Activity" and they would see tons of political posts and not really take the spirit of the TDB seriously at first. So I think this covers that issue and lets them gradually find the other, colorful areas

When viewed through the lens of duality, there is separation among us in every possible form and way; it is a feast for the senses for sure. But I can't help but be interested that the early daoist (if we can call then that) didn't look so strongly at separation, IMO. The legalist, Hanfeizi, was named among three and the other two were known for their daoist positions. Sima Qian said the Daoist [thought] incorporated the best of the rest. The comments about the impoverished asian cultures is an interesting point but focusing on their standard of living is like focusing on politics. I would say asians are generally more open in energy, accepting and non-distinguishing than western cultures. I'm not saying whether they are better, higher, more spiritual, etc... just say.

Maybe we should rename it in your honorable name

I would agree it is hidden if one's eyes (soul eyes) are not able to perceive it. Yet chapter 1 from FLowing hands: Ever desireless, one can feel (heart) the mystery. Ever desiring, one can see its manifestations. With the heart, they will find mystery or manifest.

virtue is a human trait.. Dao is not human. De is the action of Dao in you... Efficacy or capacity will work in a laoist sense.
-
exactly: Male emits vs female receives. It is an energy loop in our duality existence !

I just saw past his words to a meaning. Knowing how chinese characters can mean a range of meanings. I think he was close and I got closer using his translation. So, I've corrected his translation , maybe
-
True on wording, the word 'using' is not in the chinese, so I saw past that. I found his translation was trying to explain it in this way: In olden times the best practitioners of Tao did not use it to awaken people to knowledge,But used it to restore them to simplicity.
-
Isn't leaving them alone restoring them ? like a transmission interaction sense ?
-
here is why I like Ch'u Ta-Kao 1904 65 In olden times the best practitioners of Tao did not use it to awaken people to knowledge, But used it to restore them to simplicity. restore them to simplicity.... Flowing Hands presents a more thorough journey of the Sage's way with regards to mankind.
