What folks do today doesn't imply that is what they did in 300 BC But if christiantiy is any example, schism happen I read it from Both/And... or from every side or no side. Sides don't matter to me in this regard. I'm not a daoist, so such things are not of any personal concern but I'm willing to discuss such things.

Facebook just did its own version of fake news by simply lying... http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/03/22/zuckerberg-dont-sell-data-anyone/#disqus_thread Mark Zuckerberg: ‘We Don’t Sell Any Data to Anyone’ Well... maybe its just a white lie... maybe they just give it away free as part of some agreements... My wife has a FB account and uses a nickname that she made up to only use on FB... in fact, she doesn't even have a single post in it as she eventually never used it. Yet she gets advertising emails under the nickname she made for FB...

Oh boy.. don't get some of us started on this [so-called] distinction ! Added TDB threads for reference: Classical Daoism is there really such a thing What Defines a Daoist

I agree they called him Shangdi... not Dao ... and used that as the basis for God I thought the oracle bones had 'Di'... might have to look that up. So later, they expanded this as a compound as opposed to making a shorthand. (Did same thing for Xi Wang Mu... she is simply Xi in the oracle bones). There is also a constellation origin to Di which I have written about somewhere here.. but lost among all the stars (threads). Added: This is an article although what I have referenced was different but seems both use the same source, regarding Di: https://www.quora.com/Are-there-Chinese-characters-derived-from-constellations Ok.. found my reference: http://www.lehigh.edu/~dwp0/Assets/images/INSAP IV BEIJI copy.pdf

I follow your point about using Dao as God and have made some similar arguments too but more to show that maybe the closest thing to Dao in the west is God. The only issue I have with it is, God in the western idea is a spirit/deity and in the eastern idea (cosmology) that is post-Dao. Maybe replace the divisions with something other than gender as gender doesn't always work on an energy/light level. If energy is a spectrum of one extreme is transmission and another extreme is reception, then you will find such things abide somewhere along the spectrum and then can be felt as such too. It also helps, to me, to see then how when two or more come together, they create a kind of energy loop; like an electric circuit just completed and energy flow can be felt.

Am I insulted? that's funny. But I'm not seeing any proof that 无为 (Wuwei),actually is the abbreviation for 无为所欲为. We'd need to see something that shows the latter was before the former, else we're just creating a later proverb to re-interpret a meaning to an older word that that is not always going to fit. For example, wuwei shows up in the Guodian bamboo (300 bc) 7 times as 亡为. If one looks at ch. 37 which the received text has: 道常無為 I'm not seeing how 无为所欲为 applies to Dao when it says "Dao is eternally/constantly Wuwei". But my point is, we'd need to see the earliest use of a proverb to know if it even captures the abbreviated use in every case.

From the Guodian (300 bc) which only about 31 of 81 chapters to the MWD versions (168 bc) of all 81 chapters there are obvious a big different in chapter counts but the character differences are minor, and some understandable like the taboo of using an emperor's name had to replaced with another character. The version most know today is by Wang Bi but he seems to largely really follow Heshang Gong. The character differences from MWD to HSG-WB are also minor but do occur. SO all in all, most of the lines and meaning remain the same. This link is more a look at the Guodian and MWD, so providing in case anyone is interested. A comparison of the Guodian and Mawangdui Laozi texts

Does any one think that The Tao Te Ching is about writing poetry?
dawei replied to Boundlesscostfairy's topic in Daodejing
Not really as the references that Hendricks makes is based on the Guodian bamboo version which is written in Chu script... but if you got his book, you could see his examples. -
I have to agree overall

Does any one think that The Tao Te Ching is about writing poetry?
dawei replied to Boundlesscostfairy's topic in Daodejing
I've delayed any comment to think more as I know my gut reaction but I'm still stuck with my gut reaction. IN a word, YES. I had this same thought when I first encountered the text.. why ? As an oral text in any tradition, rhythm is easier to remember. I accept the explanation of Hendricks who has spent his studies on the Guodian and MWD versions. That the original had rhythm. That will please Marblehead who is a Hendrick's supporter -
What have I done to you? What have I done for you?

Karen did recuse herself... in back-end decisions and contact. She is free to post as she feels but I understand another might post less or even more. I let her decide. ZYD is not emotionally invested in any way... he was left (with Karen's recusal) to try something. If you watch his posts as a member, he is always pressed for time and he only came to staff on my request. I greatly appreciate the sacrifices he is making every day to even show up and comment... I also know that may cause some staff posts to not be a complete reflection of our thought or desired outcome. You know, it can be a tough job on the best days. ZYD attempted a tongue in cheek reply after my really bad attempt to diffuse things... I'm not sure if he saw my Mutt reply as a needed Jeff reply... In any case, I think if we could dial it back a few days, we would likely say it better. Your voice is well heard and appreciated. I would expect nothing less from you. And you speak as an ex-staff... thank you. -
What have I done to you? What have I done for you?
dawei replied to Taomeow's topic in The Rabbit Hole
Ok.... in keeping to the Thread Title part, What have I done for you? Those who can remember the 'owners permissions', whereby you could control your threads. At the time, I really needed to understand the basis, use, application, etc, of it. I relied heavily on TM to get her point of view and peppered her with questions to help me translate an idea to a forum setting. The current version has completely rewritten its permission structure and the only way to make it happen is very ugly in terms of forum settings (ie: tons of groups that become complicated to manage). So we disabled it but I'm still waiting to see if something is updated that allows an easier implementation at some point. For that input, I truly appreciate what TM shared with me. -
funny you didn't quote what they claimed is the #1 definition... which is the common usage and how it was used... but instead used one that claims 'everyone envisions'... please... it should read, everyone whose head is in the gutter. I guess dickhead (a stupid, irritating, or ridiculous person, particularly a man.) would be off limits too then ? This only reminds me of the childhood phrase... sticks and stones... But I do feel bad if someone mistook a sexual meaning as there is none in the context it was given. It's been explained too many times but it just gets ignored. We (staff) really only need to address how and when it was used, not every possible flight of definition the world envisions.

global assault on the character of another Bum A great metaphor, just not accurate The only person we've discussed action on is TM... she reported Jonesboy despite he apologized twice and explained (owned up to) trolling a bit. She pursued him and pushed the issue till he commented with the phrase 'butt-hurt', which she reported and admitted she has no real understanding of it and then proceeded to claim definitions that don't exist for it: In her reported post, she threaten the staff she would post more of the claim if mods didn't do something. Her response can be seen here: A simple google search will reveal its real history as spanking that then turned to simply meaning more of "overly or unjustifiably offended or resentful." The idea you raise of 'contempt' is rather loose in application. If you call me a man but I identify as a woman... I might accuse you of contempt for me. Where does it stop? I won't get caught up in moralism debates, folks can certainly hold that as they see fit but I'm not sure it is healthy to see the world as labeling us with contempt when that may just be our own view of it. So your arguments to me so far seem to mean that we should take action on TM... would the rules be less murky then ? So far, I've simply let folks blow off steam... Having children is a great lesson in allowing this murky idea.

I agree as men/male connecting with them... so it is always a relative polarity issue on some level. If you're male, then male deities will draw/drive you in that direction... and female deities will receive you in their direction. JMO

I mentioned in my previous post about respect... and I think that is what played out... as disrespect. Folks took something personal and then wanted a retraction or apology, etc. I think in both cases, they were right in their feeling but the offending person didn't want to offer it... I can also accept their disagreement as that is their decision to do something or not. You were right in your comments earlirt... this is an opportunity for cultivation.... if one feels they require such a thing. But If you freely flow, then there is no need for anything but the next step you take on your journey.

There is a lot to agree with in this... I hope you don't think staff is trying to downplay it. We can personally miss certain folks, and wish circumstances played out differently, etc... and wish we might of then posted to diffuse something too... but lets not get caught up in whether it was our responsibility or not, but rather, how can we see that each is growing and moving. Just to touch on an issue that I know Taomeow holds in high regard... can't we just respect each other or show more respect to one another... I think she is 100% correct in the inquiry... but we showed we are not there yet... that last mention is the issue... I appreciate the thread.

local mind may not be a complete explanation... maybe need to move on to whether the experience is astral or beyond that.

The thread was started about Brian and Taomeow leaving... in neither case was JB involved. He joined this conversation.. as did you.. and others. Isn't that what a 'discussion' is all about ? I take seriously that folks are allowed to share their point of view, but I also can see when folks claim others comments are not what they said. I accept that each has his own understanding.

Yes... almost a year... He would visit whenever I got in my car to drive. it improved my driving skills Seems he likes a Honda... or could be something else. His colony is rather smooth feeling; his approach is rather filling. His opposite, for me was Xi Wang Mu... I have a much fuller experience with her... and her understudy, Xuan Nu , or Mysterious lady of the nine heavens... who taught the Yellow Emperor.

I thought we were using a thread to talk the human cost of talking Trump... Is this now the human cost of talking JB ?

So far you are doing pretty good.

reality... self... loaded words.... claiming an effect or no effect... you're really complicating serious things here
