Good timing to ask... I talked to Sean today about various 'requests'... Chat is primary... but I said that there was [by another member] a request to ignore topics. I think that is a great feature. So I found a plug-in for it and requested him to consider it. Thanks for asking

Unlocked. Use the other thread to continue conversation. Welcome X247

The problem is, after 24 hours they could then delete it... no way to prevent that. Only an extreme to never allow editing, which is not the forum history nor owner's desire. Technically not possible with IP.B... not sure if other forums have more controls but I don't think management would want it anyways. Yes, but forum software has utilized quotes this way since the time of Laozi

Personal Practice Discussion Thread Request

It seems the only permission setting is in reverse of waiting a period of time... but rather, you have until a certain period to edit and it stops. In a way, the permission that exists would stop folks from removing their content after, say 6 months or a year, whatever is set. But it would kind of go against how I perceive Sean likes the idea of a member owning their content. I think we'll stick with the current method. I do know there are a few who post and then remove a majority of their posts later but I guess folks should get used to quoting more

I'd have to see if there is separate feature to edit vs delete. Likely many edit and find something quick to fix. I would agree with a delay on deleting.

Can you share examples that are bothersome. I think this is actually a fascinating idea to discussion... so I want to think more about it. Some of the oldest translations we have are from westerners (Legge, Balfour) but I found a very early asian one that I didn't realize was quite old and I look at often (Ch'u Ta-Kao, 1904). One should be able to see the difference. Later some critical asian translators vary like Chan to Wu to Lau... much different interpretation. Compare it to Yutang or Zhengkun as well. These are more philosophical leanings but Chan's notes are exceptional as are Yutang. Zhengkun is less well known as he is still in china but worth a read. I should likely add Feng-English. I understand Feng is the main translation basis. Some more modern western translations go translation wild like Hansen to Hinton to Mair... I think Hendrick is a conservative and serious sinologist but is stuck on his translation path. They are deeply studied into the language vs others like Star or Bill Porter who are more feeling the text. Finally we get to folks who are more into (without a better word now), a more spiritualized interpretation. Flowing Hands, Ni, Liao. My final note would be to translations like: Derek Lin, Ellen Marie Chen, Lok Sang Ho. In fact, I like all three. You just should read many translations and see what makes sense and speaks to you, but let's see where it goes on this thread as it could be interesting. Most of the above can be found here: https://terebess.hu/english/tao/_index.html

can you provide a link to that section or better post it here. thanks.

I could not stop laughing at these... and thought maybe we need a new sub-forum called, WTF

Very cool idea... if we could actually discuss it

thanks I'm getting more focused on smaller devices and we do want to know when something doesn't seem to work or is as easy as a computer. There will always be some gap but I think it is useful to know the user experience.

Ok, so there is an 'Edit time restriction' but it is set to unlimited. Ergo, no limit to editing one's own post. I would need someone to share if they find on a small device if this setting is not allowing them to edit their own post. Can you edit any of your older posts?
-
said you cannot edit your own post ??? I need to find that and change that.

I can still see my dad with half his body under the engine of a 1973 Ford Bronco and the fascination I had with whatever it was he was doing... In HS, I had several friends who were really into cars... in a way that I would never even later touch. They were into racing and thus, engine performance. But their obsessions with cars lead me to take in HS an automotive repair class. I would say of 4 years of HS, that was likely the best class I took; do they even do this anymore ? I spend the past 30 years doing any repair I can do myself... I have fond memories of replace my [then] gf's brakes. Another friend asked me if I could replace his 'heads' on his Hyundai engine. I had enough confidence at the time to say 'yes', although I had only done it in that HS class. Take some bolts out, take some wires out... put it all back in... those were simple days. Today, the car as a whole is much more complicated with electronics. I don't do the brakes anymore although nothing much has changed. I just can find a decent deal and I don't drive that much so it was a 6 year interval on the brakes. I do the small stuff... Tire got a nail. Ok... just go to the parts store and get a repair kit; I know this blindfolded. I go to WaWa gas station as their air is free. I like free In my experience, you want air in the tire when you pull out the nail and then attempt to plug it... but I soon realized that this was a small nail and the reamer was quite big... trying to push a too large reamer into a small tire hole is as difficult as wrestling a bear... so I think... and I had two times I was going to give up on this bear of a tire as I was sweating and at my energies end... but kept at it... and finally decided to stop reaming and just plug the damn thing You put on a bit of glue and you put in the plugging tool as quick as you can... that was another round of wrestling and 2 more considerations to give up. I sat there, next to this free air pump, dripping with sweat... dirty all over from a tire and tried one more time... just said, 'to hell with it... shove this SOB in'... and in it went. The picture of a plugged tire is a beautiful sight I saved myself a miserable $10 and lose about 2 pounds

The best way to alert the mods to a series of posts/pattern of behavior rather than report just one post?

FYI: We're getting errors on the basic setup of a new group so creating a ticket to get IP.B to take a look... not trying to delay this issue -
The master should ask nothing; The student should give everything. Then, the master should provide everything and the student should achieve nothing.

duo xie is many thanks. often a doubling of words means something more: Tian is day; Tian Tian is every day... just not here with Xie Xie. This seems to be an aspect of seeking... you can seek change, growth, and perfection but it doesn't mean it will come. But this is a curious path of what is sought vs what is gained.... what is seeked vs what is acquired. That interplay is our path we see before us. The outcome of that path is sometimes not what was sought and not what is ultimately thought to be acquired. IMO, the important part is: Be open that what you seek is not what you get, but what you get is what you need. What you acquired is not what you thought but what you are.

thanks to you and others who commented on your device use of the site. Of course we have to balance the needs of the whole vs a few and what makes sense, but the future seems to be that non-PC devices will want to connect. So based on input from our tech team, this seems a good step to take.

re-structure of forums to hopefully better give mobile users ease of navigation. Did that read like real techno-jargon ? We moved less utilized and cluttered forums to the bottom for mobile devices. Is that any less techno-jargon ? We tried to address that mobile users have to scroll insurmountable because the sub-forums are vertical... So the idea was to put the scrolling forums to the bottom. Is third time the charm here, ?

I really sympathize with your issue but common sense says to stop talking to them You're pitting and burying yourself in the need to meditation, at some point, all day long just to be able to talk to anyone. lots of good past comments. I somethings like of the idea of being 'in phase vs out of phase' in regard to the amount of interference that exists. In short, if you're bothered, that is your energy incompatibility to allow another's energy to pass through and on to a further destination where it is heading... We all have this occur, just some more than others. Consider a simple idea... maybe a mental mantra: Allow; Accept; Avow Allow that everything is arising, coming and going. Allow such things to go their Way. Accept this allowing... embrace it in the sense that you are simply an outside observer watching a grand unfolding. Don't give it any distinction as good vs bad; right vs wrong... smile on it as the sun smiles on all. Avow to the first two in a way that there is no such thing as Avow because if you hold to any of these three, then you are still stuck on comparing outcomes and worried about them in some way. In a way, I'm saying, starting with a new mental framework and allow your energy to flow more easily when in contact with other energy.

What you are seeing, similar to teamdialetics, where that thread went to 3 pages without his return.. is that folks just don't come back. I once did an analysis of how many members have less than 5 posts and the findings were shocking to me. We implemented some changes over the last few years to try and encourage folks to stay but the fact is, that decision is theirs alone. If the other thread went to 3 pages and I now split it off, then I would say there is no reason in this thread to worry about whether member is every coming back or not, as teamdialetics posted 1 time and never came back... In other words, carry on

Keep following what unfolds in front of you. Much of your description reminds me of me in terms of wondering where to go with energy practices. At one time, I resigned that I was not going to go anywhere as I just couldn't find any open doors... then one day, I saw a flyer at a store on Taiji and everything from that moment till the present has simply shown itself. I can't try and claim that is how it will work for everyone but I can simply encourage you to realize you may find a path at the least expected place. At one time, I was doing both Taiji and Medical Qigong. I had to learn to turn on and off certain habit switches as they interfered with what each was trying to show me. I eventually came to a place where it was not about what you turn off or on but what you simply naturally follow. The 'ah-ha' moment was when I realized, Internal=External. I had pursued these 'two' ideas and then within them, pursued more separation and compartmentalization of ideas when I need to let that all go and see it all as a singular occurrence. Then after experiencing that, I could then again see the separateness as our mind perceives it.

For the record... I presented it to Sean among a group of admins (past and present), and Sean supported this idea against three votes to not do it... He explained his idea to create a custom forum of member controls... at that point, I understood where he was coming from and was thinking for the future. It is most for that reason I think it is worth while to explore a solution. Such discoveries will reveal what we can do and not do; what a custom forum would need, etc.
