The Essenes, The Dead Sea Scrolls, and Christianity
Immortal4life replied to Immortal4life's topic in General Discussion
I am not so sure about that. Perhaps you would like to elaborate more? Anyways most claims can be boiled down to one particular claim, that Jesus and the Essenes were not exactly the same, therefore Christian theology did not come from the Essenes. However, differences in application can not change the fact that the theologies are related, or that one came from the other. Why? Because of course they are not exactly the same. The Essene version was the monastic version. When their Messiah came however, his mission was to make the teachings more public. Anytime, in any religion, that a monastic order makes their teachings available to the public, there are going to be modifications and alterations made, because non-monastic people have a very different lifestyle. This could be a very extensive topic, getting into many issues, like the disputes between Paul and James the Just and brother of Jesus, whether the teachings can be made available to Gentiles or Jews only, etc. Perhaps another comparison would be interestingEastern religions...There are high level priest classes, like Lama's etc. Like in Buddhism, where true Buddhism does not allow eating meat. But in some classes, householder classes, guardian classes, warrior classes, they do eat meat. The Shaolin temple for example.... some alleged Shaolin monks eat meat. Now, people can argue all day about whether they are still true Chan Buddhist monks, fake monks, imposter monks planted by the chinese government, but no is going to be so ridiculous as to say Shaolin beliefs don't come from Chan Buddhism , or Buddhism, just because some monks eat meat now. But I still don't believe Jesus ate meat anyways. A lot of people say Jesus said it didn't matter what a person eats, or ate fish, etc. I don't think these simple phrases and passages alone can be taken as historical evidence. In Jesus' time we find that Jews could only eat meat that was sacrificed or prepared in the Temple. Jesus, being an Essene, did not recognize the authority of the temple. What Jesus really was against, was the legitimacy of the Temple and their practices. Jesus would not endorse meat eating, or say it is ok, and he is not saying food is irrelevant to spirituality. He is anti Temple-tradition. Anti-sacrifice. Anti-Saducee. Anti-Pharisee. Jesus, being against the temple, could not have eaten sacrificed meat, so therefore I don't think he really did eat meat. Then we take a look at the bible. We find even in the modern version they couldn't cover up that Jesus was in fact a very strong and fierce person, willing to fight for his beliefs. You know about the story of Jesus making a big scene in the temple, freeing animals and overturning the tables of the money chargers? later biblical writers attempted to portray this as Jesus being so concerned about the Temple being pure and not allowing dishonesty or geed for money into the Temple. But come on, would Jesus do this because a few people were getting a few extra coins from their customers and being a little dishonest? Of cource not. This is just not reality. I take this story as a depiction between the theology of the Essenes, via Jesus, vs. the theology of the Temple Priests. This was primarily about animal sacrifice and eating meat. A few other interesting things... ancient accounts portray James the brother of Jesus, as Vegetarian. The early Jewish Christians, so called Ebionites, were vegetarian. Jesus taught compassion, and your spirituality is based on how you treat others, in fact, how you treat "the least among you", Jesus came to the aid of animals when no one else would. http://www.jesusbelievesinevolution.com/jesus_essenes.htm more- http://www.compassionatespirit.com/was_jesus_a_vegetarian.htm Was Christ Vegetarian- http://www.ivu.org/history/christian/christ_veg.html- 8 replies

That is for sure, but that is not all there is. There is also the oral tradition and the practice in daily life. The oral traditions and practices, which are in a way, the most important part for gaining direct contact with God, are passed from teacher to student intuitively and can't be obtained through only reading scriptures literally. The human mind is barred from heaven so heaven can only be understood intuitively through love, and understanding numerology, symbology and "myth", are but a few ways to better intuitively understand the truth of things. The inner meaning, the numerical meaning, and the symbolic meaning of the scriptures is not usually known or understood, but we know it exists and is in there. Originally the bible was written very symbolically and the "keys" to understanding a story were in the numerology. For example, 3 represents wholeness or a complete cycle, and 4 represents transformation or change. 40 days and 40 nights is obviously representing a transformation and purification. Over time the numerical keys to the metaphoric teachings were lost or deliberately obscured by the church. That was the best post I have read on Tao Bums since I joined! Well done. ^^^^ This whole thread has become totally ridiculous, however, that was great.

To get back on topic, isn't that the point of Occupy Wall Street? They are saying money is a made up construct, it doesn't actually exist. It's something people made up. The environment on the other hand, is real. No one invented the environment. So, when it com es to things like the environment, money should not be an issue. We should do what is best for the environment, whether it makes anyone poor or rich doesn't matter. If it makes people poor, or has an ecomonic downside, then the system must change because the environment should trump false things like money. It's the systems fault, not the environments fault. And I can't see how anyone could rationally, if given the choice of keeping the environment or keeping the money system, would pick to keep the money system.

We all know governments never run countries into the ground, only corporations do that, right? This argument seems so pointless to me, and I think it's time the thread dies, since it almost seems to have gone off topic. I don't even think this is what the whole occupy wall street is about. I never thought it was about politics. I don't understand how someone could hate corporations, but still support governemnts. They are all on the same team. They benefit each other, and protect each other. The friend of my enemy, is my enemy. They are all collaborators, so to pick and choose which parts to hate and which to like, is hypocritical. Either you are for modern society and modern culture and will spend your time energy, and life supporting it, or you are against modern society and modern culture and refuse to use your time, energy, and life, to support it in any way. Attempting to create an opinion in between renders you irrelevant, and you will never accomplish anything that way. If you want to get an inch, you have to take a mile. Sometimes to catch a tuna, you have to put a net out and catch some sea turtles, dolphins, and sharks. Now you can say, yes I think it's worth it, or no I don't think it's worth it, but to try to compromise with the Tuna fishers will never work. You have to drive them out of the ocean by any means necessary or accept it. Any means necessary is a principle too many people in this modern society forget. I just don't respect hypocritical people, or people who are so weak they just want to please and compromise with everyone. I don't respect pleasers. Of course I respect Winners the most, but I respect someone who played as hard as they can and lost, over someone who compromises with their enemy or opponents, because you know the compromise has let them get their foot in the door, and you will never vanquish them now. They will continue to take an inch each day, until they have a mile. I believe life is like a sport or a game. In WWE they have a saying "If your goal is not to be WWE champion, to be the best, then you shouldn't be in the WWE." I have a similar view, if you aren't trying to win in life, you shouldn't step outside of the door of your house. I believe in make it or break it. Nothing else is worth anything to me.

TzuJanLi, If anyone ever thought for a second they could tell me what I can or can't do, or tried to interfere with my life by "drafting" me. This is what I'd do hahahaha! I'd become a dark avenger. They will all be sorry they thought they could do or say shit to me. My life is my own, and I'd rather fight you than who you tell me to fight. But the key word is fight. I respect fighters. As long as you are fighting for yourself and not someone else.

Now here's a cause that actually gets me pumped up and excited. A cause that, win, lose, or draw... isn't weak. or- So Occupy Wall Street, let me know when you want to stop being pussies, "peaceful protesters", and all that. This ain't the 1970s hippy land peace and love and flowers dude. Go pick a flower Buddhalicious. I want to kick ass, and I want to fight, if I am going to join a cause. If you can get me pumped up, maybe I will join. But no way in hell am I going to march down a street with a sign, it's not my way.

Scotty should be commended. It takes some balls to be the one to step up and say what you think needs to be said. Look at all the people who are willing to help out here, but it took someone to be the first to sayi it.

Certainly you can't seriously be saying that anything pro-government has any value or can have any good effect. It seems clear to me that it is government and modern society that is a major problem. It allows selfish people to be selfish. Without governemnt no one would be protecting Wall Street. Without government to protect them it is possible Wall Street could have been taken out already and have been burned to the ground. Government in my view makes things unfair, gives beta males more power than they deserve, and holds back people who want to just take what they deserve and want in life. Occupy Wall Street has a good message, but it doesn't impress me one bit. They will never win with the tactics they are using. You know who impressed me? The Poor. Blessed are the poor. And in 1992 South Central Los Angeles proved they are the place to be, when they rioted, not rallied. In Cali when we riot not rally to live and die. Out on bail fresh outta jail, California dreamin Soon as I stepped on the scene, I'm hearin hoochies screamin Fiendin for money and alcohol the life of a west side playa where cowards die and its all ball Only in Cali where we riot not rally to live and die In L.A. we wearin Chucks not Ballies (that's right) Dressed in Locs and khaki suits and ride is what we do Flossin but have caution we collide with other crews Famous cause we program worldwide Let'em recognize from Long Beach to Rosecrans Bumpin and grindin like a slow jam, it's west side So you know the row won't bow down to no man Say what you say But give me that bomb beat from Dre Let me serenade the streets of L.A. From Oakland to Sacktown The Bay Area and back down Cali is where they put they mack down Give me love!

Nazareth- the town theology built Video about it- It would seem that recently here a debate has sprung up about whether Jesus was an historical person, and how much of his story is true and how much is made up. Here are some interesting links which talk about an interesting issue about Jesus. What if there was no Nazareth at that time, or, what if he wasn't really there? According to historical and archaeological evidence, it did not exist historically at the time period of Jesus or until after the 4th century. While human settlements have been found in the area dating back as far as 9000 years and hardcore "Christian" historians claim them as proof of Nazareth, nothing has been found to prove the existence of an actual city called Nazareth, or even a settlement called Nazareth, at the time of Jesus. No roads, villas, theatres, and especially noteworthy....no synagogues! Modern Scholarship has found many instances where the modern bible contains bad translations from the original greek texts. One example is the mistranslation "Jesus of Nazareth". This became mistranslated into being understood as Jesus coming from the town of "Nazareth". However, modern archaeology shows that no such town existed at that time. We now know the proper translatation was "Jesus the Nazarene", meaning Jesus the Essene. The Essenes were a third group of Monastic Jews who would live in Monasteries near the Dead Sea in Jesus' day, who's teachings were at odds with those of the Saducees and Pharisees in the Jerusalem Temple of the time.- Nazareth – The Town that Theology Built Textual Analysis- History- So to be sure, Jesus did exist as a real spiritual teacher. We have to be very, very, careful when attempting to use biblical texts as historical references. The bible is not a history book, and seperating historical events from mythology in the bible is a difficult task. In many cases modern scholars have found that accounts of Jesus' life in the bible were added in much later, perhaps sometimes even hundreds of years after the text was first written. For example, the story of the woman who Jesus saved from being stoned to death, it has been proven that was added in later and never actually happened. -

Hot Nirvana Judo trend, after thinking about what you said a bit more, I think there is soemthing to it. When it comes to Spirituality or Religion, I actually agree, you must be very careful not to sensationalize too much, or make it too much into a show. Spirituality is different than most subjects, and it shold not be oversensationalized. -
Here is a documentary by the CBC exploring the similarities between Christianity, Pagan traditions, and the ancient Egyptian religion. Also explored is the theory that Christianity evolved out of the ancient Egyptian religion, and the controversial theory that Jesus did not actually exist. The Pagan Christ-

To me the necessity is to put the information in the frame and context that is memorable. Maybe you are right. But I don't think you are. Instead of tearing down what we don't like, why not build up what we do like? That is your opinion, and yes, others may share this opinion. However, I have found that the subject of religion is actually far from boring for a lot of people. In fact, it can create some of the strongest reactions in people. A lot of people are interested in Jesus, especially around this time of year. -
I did not mean to make you feel like you are being burned at the stake, or being evangelized to. I wasn't even saying you are wrong. I was just wondering about your logic. The logic behind you believing in an historical Lao Tzu, but not an historical Jesus, remains unclear to me.

The key word here is oversensationalization. The problem with that word is who decides what is "over" sensationalized, and what is the proper amount? The truth is I like things to be somewhat sensational. I have no patience for boring, textbook, or uncontroversial conversations. Way too many people these days expect information to be written in a bland, technical, cold, and dry fashion with no passion or excitement involved. This is not my way. I like things to be open ended, I like there to be a wide range of directions a discussion might go. I like people to take the things that particularly interest them, and that is going to be different for each individual person. Yes, too much information can lose people, but I believe it is better than giving too little. There is also something to be said for information, can there really be too much? Again, each person decides themselves what to focus on. What is the wrong message? If I made people think, made them happy, gave people validation, made them upset, made them uncomfortable, it doesn't matter. That's all good to me. While the word "zealot" is often written with a negative connotation, it is not necessarily a bad thing. it can be a good thing. For example, if I watch a football game, I want those guys to go out there, and attack the opponents with Zeal. I like to have zeal in my life. -

Jesus in India http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvGXsHsFRlc&eur Some stuff on the "Tomb of Jesus" in Kashmir- http://www.tombofjesus.com/home.htm Another article- http://www.forteantimes.com/articles/183_j...esuseast1.shtml So basically what it says, is that high level scholars are saying there is a Jewish grave in Kashmir India, about 1900 to 2000 years old, about the right time period. It has carved feet imprints at the grave, but the carved imprints have crucifix wounds. It is certainly feasable since we know that Thomas, the disciple of Jesus, made it to India. Paul made it very far as well in the opposite direction. And that there are legitimate eastern historical texts which tell of stories of a teacher from the west who was tortured by his people but then came east at that time. The wise men came from the east, which is extremely interesting since when a great Buddhist, or Lama, dies, those of his order consult the stars to find out where he will be reincarnated. Jesus spent time in Egypt perhaps as well. Of course there will be many stories and rumors about the "lost years" of Jesus' life, most point to the east ATMA JYOTI ASHRAM - Unknown Life of Christ - Nicholas Notovitch More info about Jesus and his knowledge- http://www.atlantisrising.com/backissues/issue3/ar3dsscroll.html There have been found Gospels of other Disciples, not just the ones in the modern Bible. Ultimately the teacher of it all is Jesus, and the first copy ever of the NT Bible was written by Jesus. It is not surpirsing that he would write about all his disciples, or that his disciples would also translate them and write down their notes on his teachings and pass them down.
