Is Thought separate from the Senses?
strawdog65 replied to Understanding's topic in General Discussion
I agree. There can be said to be just one "whole" of everything. The process of breaking things down into smaller and smaller pieces does not belie the fact that they are united into the original "one". Back to the original question. If cognitive, and or unconscious thought, is based on all of the constant input from our our senses, then I see no separation. If one were able to separate the mind from the senses...would the mind still have the ability to create thoughts without any sensory input? I doubt it. -
Very well intuited. I like the line of thought you are on here...continue please.

True... the Idea of having or what may be considered, Free Will, is entirely subjective. Since I believe that reality can and ultimately will contain everything that is and can be, no matter how plausible, if possible...then its just a matter of time till the manifestation of any event can and will occur. Just my view.

How about intuition and a feeling of "knowing" something? Would this count as the type of knowledge you are referring to? Intuition is an interesting type of knowledge.

Is Thought separate from the Senses?
strawdog65 replied to Understanding's topic in General Discussion
This to me is very true. Not only images but smells. Because, perhaps, our minds are hard-wired to our senses, there can be no distancing ourselves from this sensory input? Just as a person who has had a limb amputated, and can still feel the limb, that is no longer present....maybe so true if we could separate our minds from our bodies, the senses would still linger within our minds as a reality that is no longer present? When a complete upload of a persons mind becomes possible into a machine, maybe then this idea of thought and senses being separate will be better answered. Perhaps we would need to come into this reality devoid of any senses at all in order to be purely "thought" beings. Very interesting question! -
To me, Free will as a concept, is believing the illusion that we have more control than not, of what we may become, given the confines of the society within which we live. If the concept of Free will allows a person to feel unshackled by those confines, then the worth is in the mind of the individual. And just as reality is purely subjective at its most basic level, then so to is the worth of this concept.

Hi there Marbles... Glad I got you in the belly! He is a scary person though. I think that when you so actively surround yourself only with those that agree with your own thinking, it causes a form of brain damage... heretofore to be known as... HeadinAss syndrome. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? I've read that Hitler was a very spiritual man as well. Can you hear the sound of those storm trooper boots coming down the streets of yourtown, USA?

Hya Sunya, You so nailed it! After 2012 the fear mongers will latch onto the next thing/date to keep people afraid, because it's easier to control the masses if they are afraid and actively seek guidance. The next thing that they will latch onto I think will be the asteroid that has a slight chance of hitting the earth in something like 2036. Of course there is enough time to have something else to be afraid of in the interim!

Interesting thread! Our Sun.... by best guesstimates... is approximately 4- 4 1/2 billion years old. It's what you would call mid life stage where it is presently brightening. Unless there is a critical imbalance within our Sun (making it use its hydrogen fuel faster than it should), Or worst case scenario...something like a huge solar flare directed at earth. we have on the order of 4-5 billion years before it's "expected" demise. Of course it would start with the expansion into a red giant taking up the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Our only hope of a future "human " race is our striving to leave this cradle we have confined ourselves to by our inability to work together, and our continual greed for all things "more". Interesting fact: How long does it take for light from the Sun to reach Earth? The sun is 93,000,000 miles away, the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. At that speed, light from the suns surface, reaches us in 8.3333333333 minutes.

Very cool topic! The Great pyramid complex at Giza and the Sphinx were, I believe, both pre-existing when Egyptians claimed them as their own. If you look closely at he structure and time line of ancient Egyptian culture and development, on thing that stands out is the strange way in which they are a culture that had it's greatest accomplishments at the very beginning of their culture. There is no progression to greater things. there is a marked decline in what they were able to accomplish as the culture moved forward in time. It's almost as if they had no actual knowledge of both the pyramids or the sphinx, and were merely the next culture to come on the scene and claim these things as their own.
