  1. More Evidence Against the Carbon Dioxide Scam

Lloyd this line of argument is dodgy. You're doing the same thing about Environmentalists that a lot of people do in condemning Conservatives and Conservatism as secretly being Authoritarian-Luvin citizens. There are more than one kind of Environmentalist. For example, JMG would not fit the description you give above but he definitely cares about the environment enough he has inspired hundreds of people to change their lifestyles to live more in harmony with the earth while being resilient to the monetary and fiscal gaming that's going on these days. And he's only one kind not covered by your portrayal. In ascribing Environmentalists as Absolutists (Cold Prickly alert!) it in effect asserts an absolute statement itself.

Actually a thread about what qualities an information source must possess to be deemed a good source could be an interesting thread. From what I've seen over the years Ralis typically leaves stuff like that up to other people who post. Though he does have a backseat driver tendency to complain about the deficiencies in other people's posted arguments without offering up his own reasoning showing why his reasons are more insightful and theirs isn't. I tend to do the opposite...and likely a lot of people find my posts to be a long-winded bore. Well obviously I can't speak for Ralis but JB - you don't make a good case for interesting a possible opponent into a serious debate with you when you beat your chest and hoot how your going to humiliate them. LOL. I know I'd likely have little interest in debating anyone who posted such as I'd think it was more of a pissing match to them than any real interest in discussing something.

Lloyd...what do you think Zaneblue (she's known as Witch here at TTB) would think of your post above, hmm? You know how she was at Thunders and M.com. For what it's worth I think scientists on both sides can be "bought and paid for". That's one of the problems with the way the environment in academic research has changed. As public money for University research has been cut the crony capitalism system has intensified as researchers still want to do research but can't do it on shoestring budgets and still get published. My guess is some like this arrangement while others do not. It likely depends on the specifics of each situation.

  5. Boardgaming Renaissance

I find it funny that the above also defines the typical American male FPS-fanatic video gamer. It's all about the drama...less emphasis on strategy unless the strategy adds to the drama feel of 'hunt and destroy'. No wonder the genre name has gained traction around the world with the moniker Ameritrash. American men are such Drama Queens.
  6. Defining U.S. Conservatism Down

Found this article rather interesting. Also it made me grin as apparently I'm one of a very tiny handful of people the author talks about who've consistently voted for a long time (decades in my case) against both political parties.

Found the following to be interesting... Why Energy Experts Get Things Wrong so Often I disagree with Lloyd's sentiment that peak oil is a complete fraud foisted onto the public by shadowy eco-banksters. However, I am not nearly as pessimistic as JMG that the world has lost all opportunity to make things better in the future energy-wise. The above article explains why. JMG is a bit too hedghog-ish imo which is why he discounts politics or household changes (he acknowledges them but then proceeds to explain why he discounts them) as going to have any significant effect in the future.
  8. Authoritarianism - What is it?

Ok...so I'm beginning to question what exactly Authoritarianism is. I had always thought Totalitarianism was Authoritarianism on steroids. However, I recently found a reference on the web which maintains it is its own rather distinct brand of political makeup. So here is a link to the reference I found. Global Issues in Context - Authoritarianism. One surprising thing from the paper I found - although in retrospect it does make sense - is that Authoritarianism usually has quite broad populist support - contrary to what one would normally think. And now the reference (it's short). DEFINING FEATURES OF AUTHORITARIANISM TYPES OF AUTHORITARIANISM
  9. Ganying

I always had the impression that C.G. Jung's theories about synchronicity were inspired by his investigations into Taoism...one of which was Gan Xing (ganying)
  10. Do we/can we choose our thoughts?

+1 to the above. This is what my current work has been focusing on. I've had a bad "addiction" as it were to heavy thinking. It's taken a long time to get to the point where I can have spells of up to 30-35 seconds before another thought arises. I do remember this one time about 1.5 years ago that I was meditating. Not even sure how I got "into the zone" so to speak. It was at night and I was able to feel a lot of energy running through my system for some reason. That's not usual but occasionally it does pop up. The interesting thing is that this one time I actually experienced what I think the Buddha was getting at. It was as if "I" were not attached to either my thoughts or emotions nor even my breathing! It was odd but wonderful! If I had to use an analogy it was as if there was this 3rd Party "perspective" that yet is not a "person" yet was still watching the process of breathing and there was a slip-shod-breezy or non-attached freedom to the whole experience. I finally came out of it...dissipated...but wow. It totally re-oriented my understanding of what the Buddha had always talked about in sutras and suttas of how training in one-pointed concentration finally allows one to gain an easy, breezy freedom from being lock-linked to one's mind (all aspects thereof), from one's chi(!!!) and one's breath (and thus one's body). That moment taught me as few others have that I am most definitely not what I've always thought and experienced myself as being. Quite surprising! It was amazing. Alas I've never had that spontaneous occurrence happen like that again but I still remember it to this day. Do I still think it was a "state"? Yes but that's ok. It just was what it was. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy. Damn was it awesome. It made a believer out of me that meditation and qigong are absolutely worth investing one's time and effort into.

  12. Defining U.S. Conservatism Down

I'm just gonna pop a quick link to the Tar Sands thread here. If one wishes to reply to any of the above posts and the primary aim of that reply is to discuss Global Warming (or Global Weirding as I like to call it) then please post the reply there. It fits the theme of that thread far better. Plus it's a good thread! Lots of interesting back and forth. As for some of the other things mentioned in this thread that do not specifically have to do with AGW I have my own thoughts I'd like to share. But there's lots of food for thought by other participants. Not the least of which is thoughts on posts from 1. lloyd 2. JB
  13. The Worst Argument in the World

Hah! Came across this today. Have never heard of this guy but apparently he published quite a few books in the 80s and early 90s and has his own Wikipedia entry. The Worst Argument in the World This one zinger from Stove reminded me of TTBs own Nietzschean-Materialist-Taoist Marblehead and And here's part of the essay TTB's VMarco should enjoy

    1. Agree there is emotion in it. 2. Do not agree that emotion = no foundation. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. Until the reasons that led to the emotion-tinged response are known it's definitely a personality-trait that dismisses out of hand rather than suspending judgement pending further information to evaluate. I'm willing to wait and see why he wrote what he did. YMMV
  15. Defining U.S. Conservatism Down

lloyd is here at my request R.. He is a longtime friend. He's a noob when it comes to Qigong, chi, tantra, meditation or anything of that sort. I asked him to post a few things in my threads as I was curious as to what he might think. He didn't have time to give a lengthy post. Typically his posts are very well reasoned and well supported. I didn't agree with his last post as anyone can see from my reply but I am not inclined to dismiss him outright before he's had the chance to explain why he came to that conclusion.

Not sure I agree the Limits of Growth program as it is run is fake. In any case...even if it were or is the principle argument it was making is not. All it simply says is that over time the cost of extracting petroleum will go up as the total amount of available cheap well sources declines. In other words...the "low hanging fruit" (most desirable oil sources - light sweet crude) will decline. Thus more expense will need to be fronted by society to extract the less-cheap-and-easy-to-get-to sources of oil. Ditto with coal and natural gas. At some point the lines will cross and the cost of extracting this harder-to-get-to (and thus more expensive) petroleum will make the extraction turn negative economically. That is - it will take more energy and money to extract the oil, coal and natural gas than that which is used to get it out. It's as if you're paying $2 to buy a $1 bill from a merchant. That's really what the Limits of Growth was about - where the lines cross. It wasn't saying an oil-apocalypse to crush the populace is coming or anything like that. Some does. But others...like what JMG (and others like him) teaches does not. Also rapid economic development can potentially increase the power of anti-environmentalist Billionaires as well. One would need to look at the specifics to distinguish which might be the case in any particular instance.
  17. Hello Everyone

yay! Wecome lloyd. Folks...this is a long time friend of mine. So glad he's joined the site.
  18. Kuan Yin Magnetic Qigong

I wanted to thank Trunk again for this awesome thread! I'm going to see if I can get KYMQ soon and use it with Spring Forest. The Kuji-in look great too. Things have been looking up significantly for me this year so far and I hope it will continue. Might actually start a new thread once I get the Kwan Yin dvd and see how things go.
  19. Authoritarianism - What is it?

I suppose I did make the heading rather broad-ranged although I was thinking more specifically at the time of government structures, not personality structures per se. Interestingly Reich's work is indeed one of the things I've got on my list of "books to read" for 2013.
  20. The Worst Argument in the World

Love this Wikipedia entry on this guy. Check out this:
  21. Authoritarianism - What is it?

Don't agree this is really relevant to the topic. This is a psych profile of individuals. It's not discussing the system of a particular government. One could in principle support authoritarianist style governing without being one. Indeed the first article I linked to makes that point quite clear. Authoritarian governments are typically very popular. But I'd be suspicious if anyone then insinuated that the people whom supported their authoritarian government must themselves be authoritarians. Vmarco even makes some arguments in favor of authoritarian government but does so on philosophical grounds - not because he himself is some kind of authoritarian (you'd have to have a pretty big ego imo to be one and I gather Vmarco claims his ego died decades ago).
  22. Authoritarianism - What is it?

Does this count as Authoritarianism? From the Daily Telegraph (UK paper) Helmut Kohl: I Acted Like a Dictator to Bring in the Euro some quotes from Herr Kohl

Nah. Don't worry about it. Stuff like that happens all the time. It's cool. We just simply carry on with the Global stuff here and everybody still gets to carry on several interesting conversations.

Hope I didn't offend anyone. I am no expert. Just still nosing about trying to learn things. Sometimes even this old dog can still learn new things. Cheers!
