Hi Song, the important thing here is to put aside the preconcievied notions. YM is correct in his interpretation of Shen but there is more to it than that. as you said yourself the texts are literal, so the most glaring mistakes are those that result from non-literal translations. I have underlined those. The key here is the proper understanding of 调. Here, it does not mean regulate. No siree..far from it.
