Yes, simplistic thinking can and does reduce anything and everything to something no longer resembling the original. Jung's work, as you know, is all about individuation, so it is a system geared for growth and change. You will find taoism also contains 'categories' or 'delineations' or 'typology'. It is a way to anatomise our experience and work with it. The temptation to label and fix as static is a lazy one, indeed.

Hi Julian. Yes, there are people here and they reply, it's weeeird. It sounds as though you dont think there there are certain types of personalities that are definable psychologically. What is your favourite thing to do when you are alone and free? Your answer will define your dominant function. What do you like to least? Your answer will define your least developed function. You can decide if you feel all your functions are balanced or if one or two need a bit more leg room. I think you also know if you are extrovert, introvert, or perfectly well balanced in that respect. I dont believe that psychological awareness does more harm than good. I do believe that the USA has gone diagnosis crazy and problematises that which is not necessarily problematic. The evolving DSM is absurd to the point of comedy.

hi Julian, welcome. It's my understanding that Jung delineated seperate functions in order to be able to describe them and increase awareness of dominant or inert functions ( areas of response). As he said, any 'polarity' is on the same axis, so thinking is therefore part of feeling, whilst being on a polar axis with it for diagrammatic purposes. He did also say that feeling is a rational function. Interesting!

Yes, it's "The Oracle of the Cosmic Way" and is very unique in depth book, with a lot about cultivating the inner sage that is very clear. She is great on what is not the cosmic way too.. helpful for many who fall into the erroneous presumption that 'everything is acceptable, it's all the way'. Worth getting, definitely.

I really understand. Your point about modern american life is certainly contributory to the whole consumerist mind set. I met a lot of american people who have this issue! I am torn between saying something that might sound trite like 'the whole of life is a spiritual experience, it's in your point of view that you will find it.." and 'dont force your fate'.. and saying, 'well, get yourself in to some shamanic states, and start exploring'... only you will know which path is the most conducive to your te. Your honesty is lovely, catpillar, and is a great quality to work from.

Baby, bathwater. As we become increasingly aware of the amount of sensationalists there are hanging out in the world of 'spiritual practitioners', ie. there are those who accumulate high energy moments and imagine they are accruing anything, when in fact they are acting out consumerism and treading water, its important to know that this doesnt mean EVERYONE is superficial in their experience and understanding, just that a lot are, and they dont know they are, from inside their 'arent I having fun, wow, I'm so cool' zone. An individual with integrity , with te and developed shen, will have an experience which is integratable and furthers wisdom. Others will just have more stories to tell that foster their false sense of specialness.

I know the theory yes, I also feel what is going on. The density of this plane of existence. When you tune into the big dipper, then you tune into a tree, you feel the very different frequency. If you then tune into the frequency of this plane of existence of thought forms and human doings, you get a closer idea of what is what. If you then are unwilling to exercise discernment to be able to discriminate, and act with intent to heal, then at least that is a ( very relatively ) conscious choice. Feng Shui, in corrected misalignment of locale, does not cause new problems. A taoist shaman brought in to heal a community will sit in harmony and with the power of his harmony, restore balance for the place, its weather, and people. He doesnt create a new problem. Acupuncture and herbs fixing imbalances do not create new problems. There is really no chance of a taobum or two strengthening their yin on a yang date creating a problem for themselves or anyone else. Being aware of energy flows and aligning yourself optimally is a skill. I take your point and it is well intentioned indeed. We are the universe and it is in us, and it is an ongoing skill to be in true alignment with and a true expression of this!

A flip side to our social phobia is the issues within the 'social' which our instinct wants to block out/avoid. Getting clearer on what it is about the 'other' which is so threatening to a sense of security, is useful. How to maintain integrity ( wholeness) is an increasing concern for everyone in the modern world. I say this for the sake of balance, that the instinct of social avoidance, which we can see as a pathology, from a normative point of view, is also a social comment, embodied. Finding your own values, your internal locus of evaluation, what you love and find inspiring, is a great strengthener. As Joseph Campbell said, Follow your bliss. The rest will fall into place. I dont mean to sound glib, though I'm aware this oft used phrase can come across that way.

hi imonious. the universe, oh yeh! but we live in the world, the one populated by humans and all their thought forms. the world we live in, the internet right here, is dominated quite severely in the yang direction. yang, or, I should say, false yang, is bossing the world about on a daily basis. anything we can do to not join in the imbalance is a great thing.
-
Its an extreme yang configuration. Best thing to do today is honour the yin, quietly and inwardly!

Agree with everything Jetsun said, emphasising the wish not not have toxic strategies presented here, for creating false selves and manipulating women, as if they had /+?- all to do with anything remotely taoist.

Indeed. This, and your great quote in your new thread, hone in on how calculating and contrivance are counter to the nature of what is sage. Very helpful. Using 'tao' without 'te' and 'sage' in our ways of attempting to understand or sit = easy way of misunderstanding.

I thought it was a great post and very clear and , decibelle, am grateful to you for being clear about conditioned tao.
