Shift of the Ages - the Mayan message
konchog uma replied to konchog uma's topic in General Discussion
firstly i suggest actually watching the film. but i understand that people might not have the time or motivation to do so. secondly, it doesn't make predictions. The mayans don't claim to know what the end of this "sun" or long age means. Lots of speculation and doomsday hyperbole has come from non-mayan sources, but the mayans themselves don't make those speculations or engage in that hype. wandering wolf has always warned that if we don't stop degrading our environment and fighting wars we will destroy ourselves, but 1 anyone who looks out their window or even turns on the news could tell you that and 2 he doesnt give a timeline for engage in a "date of destruction" the 12-21-2012 date signifies the end of a long age and the beginning of a new one, but that shift has a 50 year cusp, so don't expect anything to magically happen on sunrise of 12-21-12 according to the aztecs, mayans, and hopis, the last 4 suns have ended with catastrophe as a way was made for the new age to blossom, so nobody in the indigenous world is acting like that event isn't significant. But wandering wolf knows better than to prophesy, for which i give him a lot of credit.- 31 replies

the point he was trying to make wasn't about metal. hello. it was about taking negativity in, and then the inevitable effect to that cause, which is that one begins to act in a negative way. pop music can be negative, as pumped up kicks illustrates. the point is that if you listen to garbage, it degrades your behavior. the more garbage you listen to, the more severely your behavior degrades. As the adage goes, "garbage in, garbage out" if you stop at metal you are missing the point. i personally like a lot of tool's work. but just want to chime in and say that 3bob is right, whether you miss the point, or deny it, or what. darkness isn't denominational or sectarian. if an advaitan doesn't believe in darkness they are deluded. thats like not believing in light. there is a marked lack of critical thinking in this thread.

CT, it looks like Tulku Urgyen is saying that rigpa is equivalent to buddha-nature (tathagatagarba) or is there a better sanskrit word? thanks- 451 replies

its a well known fact that many students have dreams of their teachers or see them in a mystical way. you just like to call b.s. that doesnt make it b.s.- 451 replies

i don't think he was serious. But if one wanted to, they could release millions of swallows and each swallow could carry a coconut sized piece of earth to somewhere else in the world! That would definitely be the best way i think.

Hi mike 134, hope youre doing well i don't usually take my spiritual cues from osho lol, but in this instance, i think that it is the case, as he says, that bliss exists as our innate or natural state. Anything else: tensions, stresses, anxieties, constant discursive activity, conflicts, etc just overwhelm our minds and when we focus on them, we are unable to be in the state of rest in which our bliss can arise freely. So in that way, detachment and bliss are related, because as one can put a buffer or a space in between themselves and what they are experiencing, instead of automatically identifying with it, they can make room for more bliss. I think there is an emotional bliss that arises from strong positive feelings.. we all know that who have been in love, but there is a bliss that is not local and is more associated with the natural state of being. By that i mean the uncontrived, unfettered, basic state of awareness that exists even more innately than sense perceptions. That basic awareness is inherently blissful according to many of the worlds mystical, spiritual, and religious traditions. I make the distinction because heart bliss is contingent on an object to feel blissful or loving towards, but the natural state of awareness is so deep with us all the time, it literally IS us, its not with us, but its there all the time, regardless of external factors. best

Introduction to Dzogchen Retreat with B Alan Wallace

right, i can see the point that jhanas are an exercise in conceptual mind, but even as such they are tools on the path to liberation, and the insight generated when one comes out of them is really what one is after, not the bliss state itself anyway. At first i thought to myself that the argument was dodgy because anything you talk about with words is capable of being labeled conceptual and dismissed, its a common daoist copout, which i pointed out to aaron (right before i put him on ignore) but thats got nothing to do with my point. As i read on in that thread, i understood where malcolm was coming from, which is admittedly a place of deep integrity and perfectionism, which i think are good for practice. And even if they are solely mental, (which i am not sure of, having not attained them yet, but i doubt from my studies, and i don't think malcolm knows from experience) i don't think that that discounts them. There are whole schools of buddhism (yogachara) that would say that the bliss of the body is a dream without substance, nothing but nebulous mindstuff if anything at all. So thats not the dzogchen view, which is malcolms, but its a well-accepted interpretation of the buddha-dharma. So i don't know where all the hair-splitting gets anyone.. if someone attains jhana it means they are meditating well, and if someone isn't interested in attaining jhana, thats their business, but in no case is jhana an obstacle to realization, or even emptiness, as it can give one the insight to gain realization of emptiness in the absence of the five hindrances and with the insight generated by jhana. i don't think that the realization generated by the jhana state and its insight is necessarily conceptual, hence shakyamuni teaching it as a means to realization of the true nature of reality and self ho hum bedtime- 451 replies

does anyone have an opinion on this? shakyamuni said that the jhanas were not the means of liberation in and of themselves, but he never taught that they were an obstacle to my knowledge.- 451 replies

thanks for all that pero, helpful indeed song of the vajra is on the web, and i am sorta familiar with tibetan melodies.. familiar enough to just pick it up as i go along. My tibetan pronunciation and syllable emphasis is also a little practiced.. so i am not just jumping in cold. But we will see. I will have all of 2013 to listen to rinpoche's webcasts and benefit from his transmissions, so i am not really worried about getting it right on the first time.. on top of that, the WWTs are open to all so in that regard i have the rest of my life to benefit from them. Eventually i will get it! hahaha- 451 replies

Creation, are you in north america? if so, contact Harold, the secretary of Tsegyalgar East... [email protected]. Thats the Massachusetts center. He was super helpful to me, and if you go to http://www.tsegyalgar.org you will be able to find the other centers and small centers worldwide. Those links are from the guruyoga book that i have, and yes thats the section of the book i was referring to! awesome that they are available free. Hope that helps- 451 replies

yes fortunate in the end. it was when my curiosity about dzogchen and norbu really began, so it was a good thing. can you link those? im not sure just by the filename, but they sound right, and the Feb 24th transmission is the Garab Dorje anniversary. So probably.- 451 replies

Thanks Pero. Where are ChNNR's schedule of upcoming teachings posted? and why do you think its better to attend retreat via webcast than the worldwide transmission? I have my own thoughts but i would like to hear yours, thanks yeah i talked to Harold at Tsegyalgar, and to the folks at the bookstore, and got a copy of Guruyoga before i got transmission, with the understanding that i would attend transmission, and use that book to study for it. They said if i didn't attend the transmission, there could be obstacles, and based on some previous experiences with ChNNRs restricted books, i believe them! I downloaded some a good while back, and had nightmares until i deleted them from my hard drive. And in the nightmares, beings told me that i was having the nightmares because i was messing with those books! (sorry rinpoche!) annnyway In Guruyoga is an outline of the WWT format, and its not something that someone who knew nothing about what they were doing, just tuning in to a free webcast, could really do. It certainly seems like one would need the explanation.- 451 replies

interesting... Lama Surya Das also says you don't need a transmission to practice, you just sit until you recognize the natural state and then you rest in it. I have seen several traditional lamas (non-westerners) say flat out that this is erroneous, and not dzogchen. That being said, Keith Dowman is awesome, FotG has been on my reading list for a while now, along with two thousand other books unfortunately. I am reading an essay he wrote about the 84 mahasiddhas, very good stuff.- 451 replies

Is Jesus it that cannot be named in Tao?
konchog uma replied to hydrogen's topic in General Discussion
i dont think its that jesus couldn't be named, obviously his name was yeshua. it was that he had gone beyond the conceptual, the dual, into the primordial and beyond the limits of words to describe. So when john recognized this, jesus said that his knowledge was from the light, not from men, meaning that it was from the primordial, not from talking to teachers or to his fellows. just my take on it...
