Hi Wells, There is a lot more to it than reducing "rigpa" to "just your ordinary awareness which is the base of the perception of all experience." Please read the following quote. It distinguishes between dualistic grasping (which I would call "ordinary awareness") and the realization of the wisdom of rigpa.. It is perhaps one of the best explanations of rigpa and I find no fault with what has been written here at this time... Dzogchen Thogal: a Buddhist creative adaptation of a Daoist technique?
Tibetan_Ice replied to Wells's topic in General Discussion
Taken out of context this quote seems quite nihilistic and demonstrates a lack of knowledge, care and attention to Buddhist concepts. One only has to read the wiki to understand why the Tagatha would state such a statement. From the wiki: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Sutra I've bolded some of the salient parts of that quote.- 177 replies

Great introduction to Bon Dzogchen -John Myrdhin Reynolds

I was going to buy some but after reading the reviews, previews and comments I am not that interested anymore. The terminology wilkinson uses is not conventional... For example, he says ignorance "adulterates" the Dharmakaya. And yes, some of the sentences in the preview are incomprehensible. It is also strange to see someone say that the Great Perfection is entirely different from the conventional understanding from mahamudra. I don't believe in " instant enlightenment "... Not without having spent many previous lives practising and striving. So far the most interesting book for me has been "Mahamudra-the Moonlight" for a good exposition of the Great Perfection.

Dzogchen Thogal: a Buddhist creative adaptation of a Daoist technique?
Tibetan_Ice replied to Wells's topic in General Discussion
I believe that there are channels that go back to the visual cortex and also to the pineal from the eyes. That doesn't mean that the light goes back to the heart through the Kati. Here is some info about the lamps in the leap over... http://himalaya.socanth.cam.ac.uk/collections/journals/ret/pdf/ret_08_02.pdf- 177 replies

Dzogchen Thogal: a Buddhist creative adaptation of a Daoist technique?
Tibetan_Ice replied to Wells's topic in General Discussion
That is not quite right. It has nothing to do with light activating anything. It has to do with rigpa and ultimate bodhicitta. What is projected outwards are not only visions, but YOU, your channels, your body, the earth, this plane, other planes, all existences. All surrounded by white light...- 177 replies

Dzogchen Thogal: a Buddhist creative adaptation of a Daoist technique?
Tibetan_Ice replied to Wells's topic in General Discussion
Jax is full of shit again. First off, since when have you seen any thogal instructions that say to play with the light as in his Taoist quote: It is mentioned so many times in the various thogal instructions to place very little emphasis on the visions. One does not play with the light, direct it with breath etc. there is no reifying or grasping, and those Daoist exercises are a severe form of grasping. Also, thogal is not about sun gazing, it is about creating the right conditions to activate the Kati channel and reveal that all perceptions (pure and impure) arise from the heart. If anything, part of thogal is using the luminous sky to reveal the preliminary visions. But I remind you, there is also the dark retreat where there is no light needed . What does that say? What Jax is doing is he is trying to discredit Dzogchen and remove or belittle the trappings because he has pissed off many authentic teachers like Tenzin Namdak, Tony Duff and Jean Luc Archard that he is trying to find some kind of safe haven, one in which he can retain some kind of authenticity. Read this thread, all the way through. http://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=20281 Other points: - Dzogchen probably came from Bon over 28,000 years ago. - Where exactly in the Daoist practices do they mention anything about the required thogal postures? - and sure, there is some rigpa in the eyes, but there is the biggest pool in the heart. - there is no mention of the three types of gazes, the nirmanakaya gaze (up) the sambogakaya gaze (straight ahead) nor the downward nirmanakaya gaze. Although some of the recognition of some of the pathways are similar and some terminology is similar, there are enough differences in the practices (and his sourceless quotes) that I do not believe that Thogal came from Daoism, or even comes close. My opinion.- 177 replies

"you only know the words and not the meaning!"

It's just another embellsihed sutra that someone customized because they could not understand Buddhism with regards to the self. Why would the Buddha undermine his teachings like that on his death bed? From "Mahamudra - The Moonlight, by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/dn/dn.16.1-6.vaji.html -
Seeing, Recognising & Maintaining One's Enlightening Potential
Tibetan_Ice replied to C T's topic in Buddhist Textual Studies
Lloyd and Leigh are hurting Buddhist jhana practices. They are bastardizing them, redefining them so that the regular person can pretend that they reach the jhanas too. It is a shame. This is Leigh's instruction, from his book: So, instead of sticking with the breath until the nimitta appears, his practice veers off and seeks the "pleasant sensation". You'd think that because Lloyd referenced Ajahn Chah that he speaks what Ajahn Chah teaches. But that is also not so. Apart from the fact that I've never heard of "vicarra dukkha" or "vitakka dukkha" before (did they make that up?), I've never heard that metta is a remedy either. Metta is a wonderful practice but where exactly did the Buddha say it is a remedy for lack of directed attention and lack of sustained attention? The remedy is practice, not switching to an entirely different practice. What does Ajahn Chah say about what to do after hitting access concentration? From "Evening Sitting" - Ajahn Chah In Leigh's book, there is no mention, explanation or development of the nimitta stage. It is totally abandoned. Here is Ajahn Brahm's instructions. At no time does he say to abandon the breath in favor of "pleasant sensation" http://www.dhammatalks.net/Books/Ajahn_Brahm_The_Jhanas.pdf Yup, lite jhanas. Easy. Easy to market and sell... I resent people who make up their own practices and pretend like that is what the Buddha taught. In twenty years from now Buddhism will be so diluted that nobody will have an inkling about what it was truly about. -

Leigh Brasington is trying to redefine his own version of the term "jhana" into to some form of non absorptive jhana. His practices and interpretation are being labeled as "lite jhanas", very different from the Visuddhimagga's absorptive Jhanas, and very different from Ajahn Bham's as well. The is from his latest book (where he openly admits flunking the first jhana) For more info see http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?t=19787 -

the rangtong shentong distinction in Mipham Rinpoches thought

I am currently reading "Mahamudra - The Moonlight" and it sounds a lot like what Apech's guru is saying about the essence of thoughts being the Dharmakaya, albeit somewhat simplified. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0861712994/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=1944687502&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=8120810740&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=100KQJ6P0VY6R13441FS -

Did Buddha really say that? I think not.
