Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you as a member. To be only "vaguely confused" puts you in a vastly superior position over most of the worlds population. You wil find that now you should be able to edit your profile and the rest of the restrictions regarding newbies are listed below. Have fun and G'Day. Please take the time to read the two posts pinned at the top of this Welcome page and take a look at the forum terms and rules. This covers all you need to know when getting started. For the first week you will be restricted to ten posts per day but after that you can post as much as you like. Also, until you’ve posted fifteen times in the forums, you’ll be a “Junior Bum” with somewhat restricted access and will be allowed only two private messages per day. Good luck in your pursuits and best wishes to you, Chang and the TTB team ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Does not Mistress Crane grumble regarding the great pile of books by the side of the bed? Mistress Chang is always on at me to have a clear out. I also am something of a Jack London fan. Have you read The Sea-Wolf?

My own view is that whilst the basic law of karma "as you sow so shall you reap" is very simple, the workings of karma can be very complex, involving factors much beyond our comprehension. This does not matter overmuch as all that we need remember is that there can be no action without a reaction. We cannot ultimately do good or bad without receiving our just deserts.

I am sure that a fellow practitioner of meditating on the breath will be able to offer advice and/or relate their experiences in this practice. In my own meditation the ceasation of breathing is a gradual and pleasant experience which causes no anxiety.
-
My own experience is that as the meditation becomes deeper so does the breath lessen, finally ceasing completely. This is known as "the breathless state." I have always been completely comfortable with this and it has never been a problem for me. You will probably need to describe the type of meditation you practice so as to receive advice.

Like you I am in dull old December England. As I meditate with closed eyes the dullness does not really matter to me. It is really just a case of attempting to set the conditions so that they are conducive to your practice. Personally I like a dim light, the room not too hot nor too cold and quiet and undisturbed. I have gone through phases where I used incense but at the moment I do not bother – though that may change again shortly now that silent thunder has put the idea into my head.

This may give you some ideas as experts on toga tying may well be few and far between on the forum.

Tai Chi Chuan is a fighting art but it is also much more besides. It is one part of a whole. So the people who cause so much annoyance by pointing out to you that it is a pure fighting art ( the suggestion being that it is good only for combat) have sadly missed the point. People constantly say things which can be cause for annoyance, some true and some not so. That the things said are annoying this we cannot help. That we may be annoyed by them - this we can overcome. This is Tai Chi.

I am afraid that this is a problem which adversely effects our every day interactions with our fellows. The person we are with is ignored or paid only partial attention so that we may interact with someone through the use of our smart phone. They have become the new attention stealers. But this is particularly sad in the case which you describe.
