  1. Most people conceptualise thoughts as objects that are a bit like a cat that wanders into the room having already existed elsewhere (and which disappears to somewhere else and continues to exist when it leaves the room). But perhaps thoughts are more like colours? For example, where is the colour red when you're not seeing it either in front of you or by visualising it? (And I'm not talking about a red object but about the colour red.) This is a very subtle way of deconceptualising something about which very little can be said because, by definition, there's no direct evidence that anything other than the current thought exists. (A memory is just a current thought).
  2. The Father and Son of Taoist Philosophy

I'm not familiar with Moeller but from reading post #214 he appears to be refering to philosophical sublation (aufhebung). In brief, this is a process of using increasingly refined and subtle concepts to remove attatchments to grosser and less subtle concepts. The method is well known within advaita vedanta teachin and is usually conceptualised as "using thorns to remove other thorns". The final thorn can then be thrown away.

Sorry ralis, just spotted the question. As kindly pointed out, it is indeed Mt. Cooke. If you right-click on a photo and then select View Image, it will take you to the original link.

You're welcome MH! I'm glad you found it supportive it but I have to confess that I was actually helping out my good friend and fellow Buddhist @C T (post # 795).
  11. No Religion

Wow!! That's a spectacular own goal - both by you and by @soaring crane who "liked" it.

    41. If one listens with undivided attention to the sounds of string instruments and others which are played successively and are prolonged, then one becomes absorbed in the supreme ether of consciousness. Vijnanabhairava tantra Lakshman Joo translation 41. By being totally present to song, to music, enter spatiality with each sound which rises and dissolves into it. Vijnanabhairava tantra Daniel Odier translation _____________________________________________ 73. When the mind of a yogi is one with the unparalleled joy of music and other (aesthetic delights), then he is identified with it due to the expansion of his mind which has merged with it. Vijnanabhairava tantra Lakshman Joo translation 73. Merge in the joy felt at the time of musical pleasure or pleasure from other senses. If you immerse in this joy, you reach the divine. 13. No Religion

Also quite good but it would be more accurate to say that beliefs always spawn dualistic perceptions and dualistic perceptions always spawn beliefs - classic dependent origination. That's one way of explaining how jñāna yoga works.
  14. Vedanta Basics

I was thinking of the two unhealthy: jalpa vitaṇḍā and the two healthy: vāda samvāda
  15. No Religion

That's quite good but it would be better to say that: - Samsara and Nirvana are believed to be present prior to integration.
  16. No Religion

In fact, the true path is the one that integrates smasara and nirvana in unity (i.e. nonduality - which is called advaita in sanskrit).
  17. Vedanta Basics

Another suggestion is that perhaps you could discuss the four types of dialogue (two healthy and two unhealthy) that are usually referenced when teaching traditional Vedanta?
  18. Vedanta Basics

OK (To tidy up this loose end ) John Levy's The Nature of Man According to the Vedanta is a quick read that will give you a really good overview. The traditional approach will take around three to nine years to complete. However, the traditional approach is guaranteed to remove all your ignorance.
  19. Not these little ones - but happily they're in plentiful supply, easy to catch and the obliging ones skin themselves.
  20. Unfortunately, snake is a very tasty snack. I'm sure that my friend manitou would come to some agreement about her half though - if you ask nicely.
