  1. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 42

It's not an inkblot, in fact, it's reasonably easy to read, however , dao applies on many levels, it's creatively written, and many are not receptive. Looking at the simplest level of characters is looking too closely, translators really need to understand first. Fh did a nice job with most of the chapters, but he is ticked off and left.
  2. On Meditation

I already obviated the word out of my thought experiment, since its obviously a hindrance. But If you want to call it an emotion , I wouldn't argue.
  3. On Meditation

Ok , then, say ,Sam gets bitten by a dog, , the next dog he sees gets processed as a threat, Sam feels fear and figures he is afraid of the dog, so his awareness is the last to know. He meditates and finds that his awareness is secondary to- a mysterious underlying construct.
  4. On Meditation

Dumping the word thought ,,, 1) do we not process data prior to being consciously aware this is going on? , and 2 ) are we accurately aware of the processing that happened once we are aware of the summary? I think its yes , and no.
  5. [DDJ Meaning] Chapter 42

Discovered in 1600s. The issue to consider for analogy here, is not biology, but the beginnings of cognition.
  6. Tin Yat Dao Sect

Excellent ! , and while I might have something entirely different , this is exactly how one should look at the teachings. Really really great , very uplifting.

Fine, but don't expect them to search the entire site , to find out who's posts bother you . Personally ,I figure , if you really want to have something done to rectify an injustice or some specific case of an abuse , you will end up needing to point out the offense. Staff is pretty fair here , unless somebody racks up a record of being a problem. Either they know already who it is you mean, and their preference would already be a concern for you , ( if they had it) , or its a mystery and you're leveling a vague accusation about everyone and implying that staff doesn't do a proper job of moderating it. ( which they wouldn't be inclined to agree with , because they already do a good one)

    Who are you talking about?
  9. "Believe" and "appear" are the operative words. I think the incentive to abstain is more a matter of not believing the system is working as it should . Ex: I drive to work , and everyone is 'speeding' . if the system really worked , then the accepted speed would be in line with the majority of drivers desire to go a bit faster, or they could redesign the roads to accommodate. Instead , someone imposes a speed limit and suppresses speeds.

Not for me , the note to self , which I did think of isnt enough to deny the god as a somebody. 1) Because it says lead ,and you cant lead yourself.( unless you want to parse terms -which I am refraining from) In Catholicism we had the phrase,,' lead us not into temptation' and I think you could call it a dualist religion by the Swamis definitions. 2 ) you don't really have an independent self nor is there anything you can be led to. Not only place to place , but spiritually speaking if you were misguided by the appearances, this is required by the situation of the view being necessarily from a member of the multiplicity. ( the idea being that the unity cannot fathom itself as a unity) Thou art doomed to see the sky as blue, and to see the world from your view, and though you may understand the world to be otherwise , it is not a thing you can 'lead' yourself to 'see'. So this prayer to self will not change your destiny, concerning death. IMO 3) the idea that things are dualist isn't really true , that is a perspective of limited scope. It may be that this is handy to do , but its still an illusory construct. Why? 1) because There are no ,' negative ' bananas. and 2) the division of things into components is an artificial division if the universe is a unity. But please don't take my points as being an attempt to shift your own , there is something positive to be said, about the practicality of having gods , of having rituals, and of seeing the world as... less-than- real, and therefore of less burden and worry. I just talk too much.
  11. Maya

I expect I will see it the same, unless some new input alters the connections. If to you, prayers make sense , or if that kind of thing is beneficial to your practice or attitude , then go for it. As I see it , You would be praying to yourself , perhaps asking for things that wouldn't have come to you otherwise. It just smacks of the religion that I rejected. Special outfits , special haircut , prayers , acceptance of gods,, no its not for me. But I did find the logic refreshing , the speaker interesting and the whole thing understandable. I do not think one can use the term god for a universal consciousness , pray to it , and say that its not an anthropomorphic deity. The term implies a mind , with intent , or at least an independent awareness. Its used that way , and denial of this isn't enough to cover. However , the explanation about the multiplicity- unity issue in the first vid I watched , explaining why the infinite is or must be experienced as 'the many' , was very good. There were a few other logic points I thought were , presumed to be conclusive , when they in fact are not conclusive, as described. However, I would have to watch it all again and take notes this time to make this point efficiently .
  12. It's the same on this side of the pond. You are just seeing the modern spiritual paradigm. You can buy in ,or pick your own, but mostly everyone else is still going to be behaving in that mode. They are all gathering the 'rose buds' while they may ,as best they can. Whether this means the world is getting worse, or if it was just so bad then, that this is improvement, I can't say.

The one part I don't get is how he can drop back into a prayer, whatever that is, plea? flattery? At the end. Simply claiming that atheism is not enough to sustain men, without the impossible goal of total freedom,, is not really a logical arrival ,but a pragmatic choice to reinstall divinity out of a preference to do so. Which does not match the rigor applied other where.
  14. I'm impressed, but it seems so... alien, I don't know what to make of it. Thanks for posting this.
  15. Spring cleaning

For any season, cleaning up , eating well and getting out of walls is good advice. I get out and about often. Cleaning up and eating right,, not so much. I want to emphasize , in lieu of a novel suggestion,,that there is a change in mind that is promoted by open space. I don't know what old school daoists say on this, but, to me it's palpable. It's like the walls hem something in, which is good to radiate.
  16. The Brexit Thread

The Classicos might suggest that leaving things alone and allowing them to settle was the best way to nurture such things. However, I think we are living with a problem born of the info age, the news no longer can throw an objective weight around, because they are no longer objective. We are under attack from a propaganda effort internally generated and externally assisted. It may be that this turns out to be the darkness which turns on some lights, or , it could be the end of the great experiment, and the western democracies will slip into a communist miasma. I suppose I could be fine even if that does happen , I don't require much , and I am getting older fast, the real headache will befall the generations after mine. They will be the ones hip deep in water , with no private property , no airplanes , no privacy or self determination. They wont even be allowed to drive , someone will press that the automatic cars are safer than humans. Brave new world.
  17. what is human?

My dog had a very accurate sense of time,, however the cat always wanted to show up a half hour early... probably expecting me to feed her twice in the confusion ( she may have tricked me into doing it a few times too ! - my sense of time stinks )
  18. what is human?

The words are men, are like the songs of birds , and scent of ants.
  19. While I like GSm's answer for this question, I think Chuang would tell you, (if you were sincere enough) that if you asked enough people, you would eventually get the answer you were looking for. 😁 Am I right? Or Am I right? There's more certainly, but you'd have to tell me I was right, or you wouldn't be ready for more.
  20. Story of Atlantis Part 1 - Ice Age and Deluge

Actually those look pretty goodn meaty.. But , I got a Publix rotisserie chicken n finished cooking it , and that was nice and easy, so I think I will incorporate those instead. I'm tired of cutting my own up and having the remnants in the garbage disposal.
  21. The Brexit Thread

Ah, One has to have the nuts to take the punishment for saying the true thing, so they pick their battles some. Otherwise,, I always liked the 'open nature' of y'all's discussions as such. It seems to promote the subtle understanding of tactic and emotion, which ours don't seem to have. Still , from this side, I don't think y'all look bad per se' ,,to me y'all look caught up in the same net of the 'globalization nazis.'...can I say that? 😉
  22. Story of Atlantis Part 1 - Ice Age and Deluge

That's crazy about the rats, if they had pigs they could eat those, letting rats loose, would turn all the lovely islands they visited , intorat infested places you don't want to be! I thought the rats were accidental.
