Feeling Passionate About Fighting With My Neighbour
Stosh replied to swampland's topic in General Discussion
Its a tough nut to crack for sure, If youll allow me to say a critical thing ,, right now you have a lot of expectations about how things should be and which way they will go. I contend that Buddhas best point about the human condition is that he said we tend to make ourselves less happy than we could be. Letting go of expectations , for real , ,,pausing a moment and saying to oneself How is it I am driving myself up a wall over this, and what options do I have if I break with my normal habits etc alllows you to make the proverbial lemonade out of lemons. When I was a kid there were a few years when the apartment we could afford was maybe forty feet from the tracks of an elevated subway (like in the movies) We had to stop talking when the trains went by and sometimes they went by every few minutes, but It was entirely possible to get used to it , I might have woken up a few times the first week and then after that there was just the pulse of city life. The same is true for you , regardless of external circumstance , you can still pursue the paradigm of your peace,, and as long as you expect the outside world to conform to an ideal situation to foster your peace , the outside situation will remain a crutch. Just now I went outside to have a smoke , and there in front of me a flock of white Ibis are quietly feeding right next to an active construction zone with bulldozers ,soil compactors and giant backhoes. I did the journal thing too and absolutely had to have the black and white composition books. It felt like BS writing on anything else especially when you can tear pages out and censor yourself afterwards. Eventually I went to the computer and got over it. Theres a big advantage to unlined paper though, the informal unrestricted space allows to either doodle or paint , and the format you impose on the writing speaks to your frame of mind and background emotional content. It was highly involving for years. Stosh

Well Et , I dont want to drag the thread too far away from its main line of thought replacing that with the subject of my speech patterns , which I cant really change find appropriate to that which I want to say and I do not see as particularly useful knowlege ... Clearly you get the logic of Chuang tzu on that subject in the same way that I do , but you took some exception with it and I dont disagree with your point ,nor do I entirely feel a need to Challenge the reasoning of Chuang on it. Its just a little diamond sitting by itself one can reflect on it and be reflected in it. I dont even want to change it. I brought up the cat thing because It described the logic of why I said , what I said , in the way that I said it. Because I did not think that my choice of words was indicative of much more than what I considered was the best way to respond. If you can glean more information out of my word choices , that would be an admirable tool to have. But ultimately for me , my speech patterns arent going to change much The words pop out before I am aware of them , for the most part De novo , as Steve might say. I hope Ive answered the important stuff , and would like the thread to get back where it belongs so that other folks can participate , a wandering thread tends to throw passengers faster than they board. ( even though I like em just fine.) Stosh

How many people practice Taoism to gain supernatural powers?
Stosh replied to idiot_stimpy's topic in Daoist Discussion
I dont get this preference for intuition over wisdom gained of experience Is it really so unpleasant to think of yourself as having gained wisdom? No its not a supernatural power it is real , you can rely on it , its really yours not fantasy! I suppose at some point the connections become unapparent and then you might call it intuition if you like. Personally I prefer to recognize the "drill" been there, done that , seeen this game played already It tends to make suggestions as to alternatives. Besides , there are mind games people play (Berne) and if you take it as lessons of experience rather than some vague feeling , you can zero in , pay attention and intentionally develop your perception That can be very interesting. I want to say here that I admit to continuing to assume that the papers and poems that I have read and contemplated are just not the standard fare I thought they were Its just that it just dovetails so neatly with what some folks like Marblehead and Aaron and Steve write ..I just forget its more of a leap. and it just doesnt help that I read the stuff so long ago that I am not sure I can even locate the original references either. On saying what a thing is not.... It was a linguistic logical argument , in vogue at some point during the eastern daoist classical period that if one wanted to say a thing in the Absolutely best most assertable form it sould be said in the topsey turvey manner following. That it is not- a- cat , I assert. Linguistically ,a ' cat ' is a concept , it covers big ones, small ones, black ones, tall ones etc The term is vague or undecided to a degree , but it is highly specific relative to all the things which are not cats.( which also has a degree of uncertainty) If a person brings a thing into the room and you want to say with best certainty something about it... You might declare it a whole cat if it fits all the cat parameters , or you could declare it not-a -cat by any single parameter which cats do not possess. So If it has leaves , its not a cat , story over... But if it has fur, it might be a cat, and if it has teeth, it might be a cat ,and if it has whiskers ,it might be a cat ,and so forth.... uncertain-Specificity, versus , highly certain ambiguity. So they made some logical arguments in the inverted negative style to be posessing of the greatest logical certainty in their assertions. I speculate that this logical quirk led to the neti neti mystical meditative practice , and find it quite ironic that a linguistic logical argument was repurposed as such. Et you will have to take it up with Chuang tzu, Stosh

On the changing nature of Tao Ive read it both ways and so, posted it both ways. Depending on perspective they are either both true or false. Do I speak the way I do with certain purpose That would be yes and no To a degree it is just habit To a degree it is indicative of intent , which is clarity Lao and Chuang , I have read considered that stating the negative case was more accurate , it is often more precise to say things in the negative I do not speak for the universe , addresses the issue more pointedly than to say I speak for myself, which would seem more of a derailment. More later . Stosh

The situation isnt really designed to give students the rich feedback and personal dynamic which might propel them. Most of the time its babysitting and fulfilling the roles. That feedback could be stern and demanding or ...motherly , is doesnt matter which the thing is that it needs to be enriching , rich , involving. Trying to teach that which seems not to be of value, other than to suck up to authority , undermines the situation. Parents have accepted the paradigm that its all supposed to be on the shoulders of a teacher monitoring thirty or so students at a time. Its not enough for the very bright or the less academic student . Stosh

How many people practice Taoism to gain supernatural powers?
Stosh replied to idiot_stimpy's topic in Daoist Discussion
You put your finger on that exactly K folks engage in certain dynamics that show up clearly, mostly from a removed perspective and no they do not make much sense , much of the time and when you do look with more awareness , your logic follows better data. Rather than refuting logic as a means to an end , youve supported it. With the wisdom youve already gained you know how the stuff is gonna play out if you play the same cards reflexively. Stosh -
US Presidential Debate and what is really important to people
Stosh replied to AbandonEgo's topic in The Rabbit Hole
You cant ever raise enough revenue to satisfy the ability to spend. The overall burden of government on business and individuals must be reduced Tiny individual cuts only affect who 'gets to say what' to get elected and the only way to allow our elected officials to have the balls to make real change is to deconstruct present party politic power. Should I have said I do speak for the universe , and do see reason to make argument ? Maybe its just my speech pattern but I see your meaning there did you at the same time analyze my choice of verbs and nouns ? The impied negativity isnt reitterated. I think my verbiage is non-indicative of non-positivity Stosh

Are All Individualities Equal? Individuality of a Genius vs Individuality of an Idiot
Stosh replied to SunLover's topic in General Discussion
Intelligence is an ability to gather new lessons and retain them Genius requires intelligence and novelty the lessons can be either 'good or bad' ones though Wisdom is knowing that which best in the light of present circumstance with a view on past circumstance Although the human animal has a sex drive that fulfills reproductive requirement in some cases , that same drive has a degree of freedom from fulfilling that concieved purpose. One can oversimplify the human experience to be all about reproduction but thats as much imaginary construct as the pattern called plaid. The pigments really are there , no doubt the pattern is subjectively there and objectively there but the pigments do not have purpose unto themselves to comprise the pattern. Sexes exist , drives subjectively exist , and the purpose is imaginary consruct. JMO.. Stosh
