That equation would be 1Y+1X=1( X or Y)+(1Y+1X) Meaning that all the universe isn't the same, that is a false presumption which you inadvertently added. If it were true , then 2y or 2x would also yield a baby. Additionally , one should ask how the hell would some old Chinese guy know about cells ,2200 years before they were discovered, or the beginning of the Universe for that matter. The reasonable answer is that he didn't ,, though you may , and you are now inserting your knowledge into the brain case of someone else ,and are attributing godlike powers to mere mortals, to account for it. >> and why would anyone make THAT choice?

The general key is that they aren't paradoxes , they are ironic. A yang thing taken to its extreme can be seen-understood as yin ,, and vice versa. Several of these translators have skewed the ironies by trying to make them acceptable in a linear way rather than a reciprocal-cyclical one. For instance "Great rectitude seems bent low" The humble person bowing- is doing the respectable thing , not disgracing himself, by physically lowering . Which the author sees as exhibiting virtue. The 'proud' person refusing to be respectful , is being obnoxious. Which the author deems of low virtue, (spiritually low). In the real world things may actually spin the other way but..In a preponderance of situations , it pays to show due respect , and backfires to be obnoxious, (so the 'natural' consequences of the behaviors condone or confirm this humble show of respect, as being of greater virtue.)

I hope this isnt too much of a digression ,, but , I could talk to my dog , all day and he would stare at me blankly , making no associations. UNLESS I said the word cookie ?, or walkies? or anything that sounded like those. If we have a strong reaction to words or ideas , its because we are making certain kinds of associations ,, that shouldn't be news to you , but seeing as how your reactions are something of a bummer, the negative associations you are making, are specific to you , and while other people may be fine with a certain set of ideas , it may just be a long row to hoe for you to get to a point where the same things do not bum you out ,such as they do. Nobody wants you to be bummed out ,although sometimes you DO have to get to the far side before things start looking different. If you've worked at it a while , well , maybe the whole samsara thing isn't your cup of tea, or maybe it just has been relayed to you in a way which isn't turning the engine over. Give a listen to someone who doesn't bum you out and ignore everyone else, if this is what you want to stick with. It isn't really much my cup of tea , but ,for other reasons than the samsara idea , which doesn't bother me at all,, yet some of the Buddhist canon strikes me as particularly well considered ,despite all that.

Is this better? The sage , liking a lot of Tao, gathered up all the yins and yangs .

What exists and what happens , get subdivided by words into parts , which are mental fabrications, tools of a sort. Folks get caught up in the words chosen by translators , and the words of others, who tried to relate their personal understanding. Yin and yang are mental subdivisions with relative value , one can say they define a vector or trend, however,, , I believe the classical Daoists noticed that the trends , had a cyclic qualities, like the stars in the heavens. Yang waning while , yin was waxing , then yin waning and yang waxing. They applied this concept to all levels of society and the natural world , to render fresh insight. It does not behoove one to get stuck way back at the starting line , worrying about what the words beyond ,or follow, mean. Just go back to it at a later date when you have the context in hand, because that is more important than the choice of verbiage someone used.

That Chuang uses Conf as a foil , is established enough for me that , wherever he appears , I think one should look close for the erroneous aspect.. Conf had the conventional mindset , he wants the fame , he wants fortune and so forth, Chuang prefers to get by living a peaceful life of status quo harmony etc dragging his tail through the mud. Conf instead for ex. , tells his students to go looking for conflict, so as to make a mark For being the settler of conflict,, this is already established in other chapters, and in this one, it is held out as a carrot to induce the behavior of his followers ( so I figure this drive is motivational to him as well ) . Chuang would ask, "Why the hell would I want fame and the headaches it brings with it? I would be inspiring others to jealousy , people would think I am egotistical, and a phony , doing this crap for the money! " From there, we see that Conf is concerned with the trappings of being a sage , fears for his physical body , and thinks that this is at the heart of wisdom , fearing even when he lays his head down to sleep.

Theres no reason to assume that the subject discussed Must be fear , it just seems to me to be the subject Conf thought it was. Im ok with the awareness of self as being the thing wisely attended. But Conf was not the sage in Chuangs eyes ,and so the view of Conf as deliverer of Chuangs message is contraindicated. .. the sage is interested in fame now?
-
Telling people they need to live in fear, when they are safe and fed,, when none can point out the threat,, would be a disservice indeed. Conf still doesnt get the message. Never leave your home without an armed escort? This is wise to Conf.. then he fears for his body and betrays his freedom .

Compassion Helping Oneness : What a Stench
Stosh replied to rideforever's topic in General Discussion
I think people who chronically want help, often, really just want to be able to see that people care about them, that they have a place or role , that they are accepted by SOMEONE. Its not about the form of the 'help'. The other thingie, is that ,while one considers help as a generally good thing to contribute , it still represents an interference that undermines the targets sense of authority or validity. Done correctly , it's a behavior that binds people up , makes them feel whole and valued and valuable,,, done wrong , and there's a backlash. Like for anything else there is a fine line to consider. -

I'm FROM New York ,... it doesn't really look like that. -
Computers already function without awareness. Wei wu wei is a spiritual concept related to initiative , involvement and purview. A koan juxtaposes paradoxical oponents to elicit a sort of mental opportunity to reach new insight. I doubt the considerations you would be offered by the various schools of thought , will provide you directly with an impenetrable encryption resolution.. at least regarding wu wei as an exemplar. Good luck though.

The Dao is not a summit sat on. No one and no thing attains the perfect static balance of it, or all hell would break loose. The skies would choke, mountains would soar off into space, the rivers would puddle and fester. The ever pulsing dynamic of Tao, breathes life into a world of cycles and rebirth by constantly tearing down the constructs of yesterday, and the relentless chase drags us to our elusive destiny.

When a smartypants hears of the tao , he spurns it, since it challenges what he considers to be the epitome of virtue , a thing he thinks he already has. When the ordinary person hears of the tao , he tries to fit it into boxes he already has, and either obeys or fights with it, without coming to a new understanding. When the fool - that is to say - the sincere Daoist - hears of it , he laughs , because it is both obvious , and ironic. It lightens his heart to have heard the truth spoken.

My dad used to tell me to imitate a tree... but I don't know whether that was telling me to be quiet, or Leave.

Well yeah, there is a degree of imprecision , sometimes my expectation about what I am going to be able to relate and ,have actually been able to portray.. don't match close. I guess I am not as good of a verbal artist as I like to think, but it seems an audience has things it wants to hear, preferentially. And in a combo, my lack of patience , presumptions about how obvious a factoid is, and the other things adds up to a lack of success , often enough. Your idea of meaning is a bit self centered ,,, not that there is anything wrong with that, but its just that the author has both his intents and his meanings, that you, or I ,are not invited to modify. I think we are invited to hear him out, give the stuff a fair shake, BEfore modification to our own taste or rejection. I'm getting tired though, of banging my head against that tree. I want a new angle.

Is non-duality actually a fundamental truth, or just another philosophy?Â
Stosh replied to Bindi's topic in General Discussion
If he was looking for an unchanging thing , he could have chosen emptiness , or atoms , or the principles of the universe, but its just not news to anyone that physical things wear out and run down. Its a ,, a,, correction that no-one needs. What his followers didn't do , was apply this idea to their selfs in its entirety, they came up with a hybrid opinion which wasn't as scary. That one both exists and doesn't, same as Christians deal with the death of the body,, they just claim that there is something which goes on afterward, something that is still 'them' personally. -

I got interrupted by Apech's post. But I use punctuation in my own fashion too, commas do not seem to present a long enough pause used individually. So,, yes
