Haven't seen that one but I remember recommending https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jltM5qYn25w to my sister some weeks ago. De Botton says a lot of good things in a very pleasant manner.

TM is not real meditation, it is more like hypnosis
Boy replied to Tibetan_Ice's topic in General Discussion
That was a really nice video, TI! Thanks for sharing. -
Coming from a strict socialist upbringing I only dared approaching Rand in my thirties(!). It was like coming home. The article is a childish hit piece, but I have no interest in explaining or even discussing the common sense (thanks Chang!) of objectivism anymore. To me the foundation is dead simple. I actually don't understand why otherwise intelligent people won't get it.

Mindfulness for Beginners: Reclaiming the Present Moment and Your Life
Boy replied to Tibetan_Ice's topic in Buddhist Textual Studies
Not only mindfulness, but yes I don't see how you could get enlightened without it. -
Resting your mind on something is not the same as thinking about it
Boy replied to dwai's topic in General Discussion
You are being very modest. May I suggest letting God’s grace work through your continued efforts? Call me when you’ve joined the dark side -

You are certainly an accomplished meditator, dwai. I wouldn’t mind hearing a few words on your ”little bit of practice”. That said, I’m left wondering where you’re going with this. ”Disappearing”, ”merging”, ”void” - sounds more like death than truth. Have you forgotten about sahaja samadhi? -

Impressive! Just to be clear: now that you've seen both the witness and the mind, who or what is making "the effort needed to focus"? -

Is it easy for you to rest your mind on something, dwai? -
Yes. Turn your head towards right and upward. Then, investigate your frustration.
-
Cult it is, then. edit: what is a "white light experience"? and also are you really looking for help?
-
@Siddharthashoka: Life is meaningless. There is no purpose. If you really want that you could join a cult. Or you could set your own goals (read Sartre to get started!). The truth will not give you purpose, but it will take away confusion and suffering. I personally would recommend that you revisit theravada buddhism. @Papayapple: Internet forums are poison. Take as little as you need and then leave.

is enlightenment a mental disease, according to psychology?
Boy replied to mantis's topic in General Discussion
Yes. -
Boy: They are indeed. Speaking of quotes.. Whitney Houston decided long ago never to stand in anyone's shadow. I tried to find a way not to make a shadow. She died a terrible death while I was despondent for many years. It's better to do both.

@Marblehead: I see. Even though that is not what Ramana spoke about, I agree that a clear view of oneself removes a lot of stress.

A rest won't take you anywhere, dwai, but I agree it's very nice to stay silent in the flow for a while. To be perfectly clear - it's not "meditating on the meditator" as I understand the expression. Then again, since we're mixing quasi-Buddhism with Vedanta et al it's hard to understand what anyone really means. It's been said before but for real progress I really think it's better to stick with one religion. I would put it in stronger terms if not for the fact that we're all here.

Yes, wilfred! I watched it on vhs with a friend some decades ago and we replayed the mirror scene several times. Stacy Keach - what a guy! Awesome film.

I get what you're saying, Marblehead. It sounds very nice. It's right there in your name as well. So, now for example, this thread has veered off topic because of a few of us - you have no qualms about that?

That's interesting, I'm your complete opposite in that regard. Any drawbacks?

Let me add to the confusion by saying that the consciousness Balsekar speaks of is the one behind consciousness What people make of the former is in my opinion the source of all this confusion. I'm with Buddha in thinking you should mostly keep quiet about it and instead point out the way for those interested.

I think you already have more thoughts than you can handle, chi boy. Time will tell if you're sincere about this enlightenment business, but for the time being I would recommend you take control of your "animalistic instincts" for the sake of your partner if not yourself. Celibacy, imho, is not in the cards for you.
