  1. The Seven Sages of Bamboo Grove

Watching Part 1 I felt to be missing something due to lack of Chinese. Is there any significance in their 'nicknames'? The Aussie voiceover guy just reels those off... " also known as......." without saying what the nickname signified apart from maybe that mandolin guy when voiceover man says.. " X is the name of the Chinese Mandolin". So was that guy nicknamed ' Mandolin' because he played the mandolin or was the mandolin named for that guy? And... What is the translation of all seven of those guys nicknames? Does anyone know?
  2. The Seven Sages of Bamboo Grove

Many thanks Harmonious Emptiness. Most interesting.

  4. "There aint no such thing as the Ninjas. What is that anyway?" ( Fat Tony ... paraphrased). :-)
  5. Random thought about Dao that can not be spoken

Or maybe a painting neither begun nor not begun. That sort of painting. ( Wanna buy one?) :-)
  6. Philosophical Taoism

Will take a look at that 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove'. Does anyone a reference or recommendation for a book or decent link please? MH's tripartite taxonomy of Taoism elsewhere on here got me thinking. I'd not differentiated between Alchemical Religious and Philosophical Taoism simply cos I don't know much and haven't read much, but would like to. As someone who earns the odd shilling enacting a Philosophy ( Existential Analysis) - as per my earlier link to the Society for Existential Analysis - that approach 'in and from' Taoism appeals. Philosophy can be enacted hence, if phenomenology can be and is used as a therapeutic praxis ( " "Shit happens , live with it" being the unofficial motto of Existential Psychoanalysts) .. Then maybe Taoist Philosophy might do the same. We'd still need a careful and mutually agreeable contemporary definition or definitions of just what Philosophical Taoism 'is' though.
  7. finding my master

I still fancy one of those 'Great Wall' mini vans. Still not on sale in the UK and I've still got the old Matiz.
  8. Is there a link to where Kosta Danaos answered those questions please? I can find the questions but not his answers.
  9. making small talk

Show an interest in what they are saying. Ask questions. Listen. People love that, they chat away , you don't to have to do much or any small talk and they go away thinking what a wonderful person you are.. saying.... " He's such a good listener."
  10. duck season, rabbit season, allergy season

Is it duck season in the USA right now? I thought that was in autumn. Migration rather than breeding time.
  11. Most of those teachers who work online have their own websites though. Can't see why they'd bother with TTB apart from free advertising via product placements disguised as posts. I'd rather hoped that we'd moved on from that.
  12. Wu Wei 'non doing' meditation suggested in TTC? query

Thanks MH. Chang Tzu will do at a pinch guys. It's references to look up that I'm after.
  13. finding my master

Hello klr. Welcome to TTB. Maybe Taiwan might be a better place to look. Or even begin looking where you are now as there are some super QiGong teachers all over the world. Non approved QiGong teaching is proscribed in China. This is the only official QiGong body. http://jsqg.sport.org.cn/en/ Anyone not licensed to teach QiGong in an approved manner and who is caught teaching in China could possibly face serious consequences.
  14. Philosophy subsection?

Maths and Philosophy are favourite subjects with university administrators as neither needs very much by way of resources. For maths all one really needs per student is a pencil and some paper plus one wastepaper bin per classroom to receive discarded workings. Philosophy is even cheaper to resource. No wastepaper bins are required. I lurve philosophy. It's that time of year at work where the first years begin to grapple with Philosophies of Education in order to apprehend, and thereby justify a beginning 'underpinning methodology' for their own teaching praxes. I lean towards the constructivist ( neo-pragmatic .. Rorty et al) and funnily enough so do most of the students by the end of this next ' Phil of ed' unit. If nothing else pragmatism is 'baggy' enough to accommodate various approaches. A Philosophy thread would be good on here but maybe focused on Philosophical Taoism as per MH's tripartite taxonomy of Taoism. Alchemical. Religious. Philosophical.

  17. Marble Gardens & Fish Ponds

Well we were all saying how nice it was to see the butterflies again. Down side... Two big fat caterpillars have munched an azalea head today. They were taking a post- prandial siesta stretched out along the stem and so well camouflaged that they took some spotting. Mrs GMP found and consigned them with our customary farewell blessing as she squished them.. " Become a Buddha." We work on the general principle here that garden pests are reincarnated formerly human pests, back here to learn a lesson . Hence liberating them opens up brighter possibilities to them for their next time around.
  18. Martial Arts Section?

That one I linked to does. There's a psycho over there now on about having MMA bouts 'to the death'. Not nice! Most threads are OK though and it's the go- to site for the biggest number of 'style' sub forums.
  19. Is Buddhism a form of rational atheism?

There's room and more for all sorts and conditions though surely? All respect to lineage holders they are in a long line of tradition and practice. For sure there can be 'transmission' and that's valid and valuable to the person 'transmitting' it and the person 'receiving' it. That's a facet of Buddhism ( and some other paths too) but it neither defines ( because not everyone does it and where they do, there are many different lineages) nor encompasses ( because as we agree on here there are non lineage routes too). What suits one won't suit another and we can't 'privilege' one path, beyond personal choice. To do so might seem to be seen as marginalising , at best; or at worst disrespecting other paths. One mountain for sure... But there are many paths up that mountain.
  20. Is Buddhism a form of rational atheism?

Agreed, but maybe rational atheism can be contained within Buddhism along with everything else.
  21. Magick has nothing to do in Tao

My MA buddy who sent the talisman also sent two anting anting T shirts. Talisman printed on the front and the club logo on the back plus a sponsor ad ( for a brand of beer!) The eskrima ( stick fighting) lads wear them when training. In theory they protect against injury and ensure victory. Couldn't put them to test as I no longer play MA. Hence Mrs GMP sequestered them for gardening in. Rather than pay silly money online if you want one try the Eskrima MA sites. They only cost pesos on the markets in the Phillipines and the Eskrima club lads are really friendly. My online buddy wouldn't even accept postage cost so I sent him some books.
  22. Martial Arts Section?

http://www.martialtalk.com/forum/forum.php Somethin' for everyone MA wise here.
  23. Finally something that suggests mindfulness?

Everybody's enlightened ( potentially). We're all just too darn busy to notice. :-)
  24. Philosophy subsection?

    I'm in. Good idea.
  25. Magick has nothing to do in Tao

Same metal exactly. Mine has a spell on one side and a ladder + eskrima kit and skull n X bones etc on the other. Can't do piccys nor even smileys on this tablet.
