They laid this stone trap for him, enticing him with candles, as though he would come like some huge moth out of the darkness to beat there. Ah, he had burned himself before in the human flame and escaped, leaving the reason torn. He will not come any more to our lure. Why, then, do I kneel still striking my prayers on a stone heart? Is it in hope one of them will ignite yet and throw on its illumined walls the shadow of someone greater than I can understand? ( R.S. Thomas). -
We should all have Kurt's book sales.

What is it with moths and windows? Flies too. You open a window to let a fly out, does he use it? Nope, just keeps banging his head on the glass. We use a tumbler and card to assist flying numpties back outside. -
Can we practice/meditate/do significant energy work while working on other things?
GrandmasterP replied to Brother_Thelonious's topic in Welcome
Little and often beats a lot just now and again Ken so if you don't have a lot of time to cultivate during each day how about trying a cultivation that takes less time and that you can cultivate every day? Baduanjin is very popular with busy people because it can be completed in a relatively short time.- 92 replies

In Ethiopia it's called 'callisthenics'. Man but those Ethiopians can sleep. Any time, anywhere. A 'guide' once led our horseback trek up a mountain ledge trail and down the other side. He was snoring all the way and his horse looked pretty sleepy too. In Coptic ( anecdotally) the word for 'awake' translates into English as 'in between naps'. :-)

@Allinone No disresepect intended man but you're either celibate or you're not. It aint a part time calling. Going without isn't celibacy that's just life. Opting to go without for a period of time - with the option open to dive back in - is continence. Celibacy is a vocation and usually a lifetime vow as well. Not always. Zen monks in some traditions can marry or have partners and in other traditions such as the late Peter Matthiesen's if a zen monk wishes to marry then he re- ordains as a zen priest. All the old school Japanese temple Zen guys were married as that was and still tends to be a family business with the oldest son inheriting his father's priesthood and temple. Taoist priests that we've met over in Taiwan were all family men. Hard to call it in China, much of what passes seems to be tourist oriented with many of the 'monks' you do get to see putting on shows looking suspiciously like circus performers. Official state sanctioned QiGong in China is entirely secular.

We thought ourselves lucky to have empty tin cans and stones to put in 'em. Luxury!

Are you a Left Brain or Right Brain Bum?
GrandmasterP replied to GrandmasterP's topic in The Rabbit Hole
70 Right 30 Left I am according to that test. I suspect that I'm slightly more Right than 70% though. A few years ago I ran Right Left brain tests with students. Not a big enough number to draw any meaningful conclusions from but there was a tendency towards right brain predominance. I looked at QiGong attendees at our centre ( not senior citizens) and our faculty first year undergrads at work. It's a humanities based programme ( Philosophies of Education). Had I tested the engineering faculty intake I reckon I'd have found lots of Left brain people there. -

Scientific Proof that Magic Works(!)

The day any scientist can make a tree in a laboratory then I might take an interest in science, so far... Nada. -
If you travel somewhere meet people you know and they never saw you there. That was lucid dreaming. If, on the other hand; your sensitive chums report that they did see you there. That was astral travel.

Young nettle tops, very lightly steamed are nicer than spinach IMO. You need to start with a lot to get two portions though - it goes to almost nothing in a steamer. Maybe don't try this but when I was a kid my old grandad once showed me how to pick nettles without being stung. Imagine that you are wearing a glove and get right in there and seize the nettle firmly with rapid and determined mind. Apparently ( according to granddad) the nettle can sense this and retracts its stingy needles. He was a coal miner mind you so had hands slightly harder than a horse's hooves. I tried it and was stung liberally for my troubles. Having hands softer than a baby's bottom, then and now; I persist in wearing gardening gloves.

Very topical thread coming as it does in the week Google has announced that it is setting up some facility for Googlers to delete or hide parts of their posting past. Would that we could do the same with unwanted or undesirable episodes from our actual past. I was once married to a vampire for example. That could go for starters. :-0

Princeton study confirms: USA is an oligarchy
GrandmasterP replied to Harmonious Emptiness's topic in The Rabbit Hole
Yep. Life can be sweet. :-) -
I has some live yoghurt from our refectory today that had cold arabian-style really thick coffee at the bottom and top of the pot. Just about half a little finger thickness depth both ends. That was nice. Cottage cheese I love, we eat a lot of it; but maybe not with oil.

The most influential Taoist figure in last century: Chen Ying Ning
GrandmasterP replied to exorcist_1699's topic in Miscellaneous Daoist Texts & Daoist Biographies
Apologies if my posts seemed 'snippy' Michael, that was not the intention. Perhaps the situation in the USA is better regulated than here in the UK. We have enough critics on the outside without falling out amongst ourselves. I cannot fault your posts here at all and will leave it at that with good wishes. -
Bit off topic this so just this and I'll stop. Here in England the Roman Catholic Church was struggling to get priests to fill vacant parishes. The last Pope made a ' Personal Ordinariate' whereby married Church of England Priests who wanted to could become Roman Catholic Priests, some have done that and now work as married Roman Catholic parish priests. I reckon that the Roman Catholics will allow married priests elsewhere eventually so as to maintain the supply of priests. That whole celibacy thing has to be a huge barrier to recruitment these days.
