  1. Hello all Been away for a while, good to be back I am looking for people who are in beijing and want to meet up for some rou shou or push hands practice. Is there anybody out there???????
  2. First action then words

the point was not 'never quote anyone' but do things don't JUST quote people, and think that it is enough
  3. does any body here push hands ans a form of two person meditation I have somethig about this but not very much, the puch hand that i do right now is mainly combative based on striking, trapping and locking not much long term flow would be interested to hear from anyone who does this as a meditation
  4. opening

hi there following the poll on what have you opened, i would liike to know how the people that have opened something know what sensations gave it away? was it like a bolt of lightening? is it something you just know? didn you need osmeone else to tell you? i realise the possible problem with talking about this so you can be as detailed or as vague as you see fit
  5. i get this too wow I think the time tht i remember the ost was during alying meditation (i was really tired from work and the gym, so i did lying instead of standing) Was feeling really good and got a wave of goosebumps, but the wave passed over me much much faster than usual, not in an un pleasent way but just far quicker, also afterwards i felt the feeling linger in csome areas, I assumed at the time that the feeling was quicker becasue iw as very loosed and relaxed, and the lingering areas still had some tension
  6. if you have already done standing and looking for a slow moving spirlaing qi gong i would recommend learning Baguazhang of course it depends on the teacher but mainly - first you learn stading in the bagua postures, which in themselves invlove a lot of spiraling of the torso and also the limbs and smaller joint - then you learn walking with the hands in static postions (ding shi ba zhang) this also needs you to maintain all the twisting of before but on the move -after this then thestyles really seperate, some do a the old eight palms, some move on to a 64 palm change again it depends on student, teacher, style (not in that order) if you ask your teach more about where yourintenti0on should be in eah of the postures and what kind of energy you are meant to be creating, drilling, pushing, lifing so on then it might be hat you are looking for and can be done, super slow, and super low
  7. The power of Internal Martial Arts

MMA got the name for being the big thing in Martial arts an long time ago becasue of the first few competitions where people from every style jumped in now everyone is doing basically the same styles, a few punches one or two kick (excpet for some notable exceptions) and ground work however, now it is a a sport not style vs style but a sport where poeple have got hooked into the rules where people ask if a TKD fella or a wing chun guy has ever won a UFC bout, well no of course he hasn't becasue he is not fighting under his sporting rules, also put the ufc guys into a tkd bout they wouldn't do too well either. great epople to look up for a reality system is Geoff Thompson and iain Abernethy. 2 gentleman who have really looked into and used their arts one thing from these gentlemen i would like to bring up is... Martials arts are not for a square go, a one on one fight that you train for and are mentally and phycaill prepared. it is fro when things explode against untrain guys who are running screaming and snarling at you. even trained fighter at this point don;t always fall back on their training, look at the Mike tyson Lennox Lewis press conferance when it kicked off, they did put their guards up and use faints and jabs, they just went straight in. not boxing but brawling I would take BJJ but i would want to train specifically on how to get back up froma grapple, and how to qucikly damage some one ina grapple, not how to roll for a long time, it give his friends or even some puch happy passer by too much time to use my head like a football
  8. What Have You Opened?

ok I voted none but when i read some of the replies i am not sure now I will say that when i am doing standing meditation and practicing reverse breathing on the, i feel energys flowing up and down my arms in time with my breathing, i.e. when i breath in i feel the 'energy' receed when i breath out i feel the energy flow back down in to my palms nothing in my legs unless i am lying down um and thats it...... is this sort of thing indicitive of opening anything, sorry i should know this but my little chinese teacher just comments that it is good but doesn't really go into details about these things most of the time
  9. You are all delusional!

hi there sorry I didn;t have time or energy to read all the posts but it seems an interesting discussion, and a question that i have been asked many times i.e. why do you do these things firstly let me outline my practice: mainly MA aikido and bagua through bagua i study qi gong and meditation. fairly simple one of the early post asked why do you mediatate and not go skiing more, good point i think meditation is only one stage. and is a practice to being able to have more control over yourself or your mind at least. we should be able to do this with out any outside stimulus and we should also be able to do this without lighting a few candles and closing the curtains and getting cosy with ourselves. Meditation comes in many forms, there was a study done on a person praciting Kendo, a yogi meditating and a long distance runner. all there brains were producing the same wave patterns thorugh thier choosen activity, and also when i am practiving randori in aikido i feel the same as when i am meditating but it would be a really pain in the arse if everytime i wanted to switch off and get centred i had to start throwing people around chi/qi has also been spoken about alot
  10. Advice for Tai Chi needed.

Hi there All taiji styles in the end focus on moving the energy round the body, the question is more about the teacher than the style of taiji Of course taiji styles have there own things going on as well, i fnd that becasue of the very soft nature of Yang style it attracts many people who are just wanting to move slowly without any intention one of the most important things for what you are looking for is the standing ost exercise, the the teacher doesn't do this for a time in the class and can't link the exercise to the forms then you need to change teacher. My advice is to go along to the classes you mentioned and watch what is happening during the session don;t expect the teacher to go really deep in to to chi and energy with beginning students, again if he does then you might be in the worong place good luck with you search
  11. Beijing?

how many of your guys are in China? how many in Beijing?
  12. just out of interest (this may belong on a thread of its own) how do you measure enlightenment? if fact how do you know if you yourself become enlightened?
  13. right then the phrase internal martial arts is relatively new. coined by Sun Lu Tang a couple of hundred years ago. what does it mean to you guys, it is just a different power generation method? does it need a health aspect? or what other criteria would you give an internal art
  14. unfinished sentences

  15. the balloon debate

hi here is something i sometimes give to my students to get them discussing some issues, this is the easiest one based around jobs, coming soon world leaders please if you vote can you explain your choice/ suggest someone who shouldn't be kicked out
  16. the balloon debate

iyoiyo just for fun mate, yes lots of people choose the lawyer but some people decide to keep him to sue the balloon company when i do this in class, i usually assign each student a person adn they have to make their pitch as to why they should stay. not a deep topic but something to get them talking which is the main aim of my job anyway i have had some very interesting arguements over the years i will post some of them when it is not so late
  17. so i was practicing push hands last night........... i am not great at push hands at all but i find that a lot of the guys that i was pushing with, when i started to get the better of them in a lock or some such they would just lock upso tight that i couldn't move them, now to me that seems just plain wrong, when i am doing push hands and some one gets my in a lock (like an arm bar or something akin to an ikyo in aikido lets say) i use/try to use my shen fa and softness to escape and if i can't then i have made a mistake and i let them have the lock. but i never tense up and struggle out of it as much as this would probably get me out of the situation it seems that it is not what the aim is and is falling back on an ego driven need to win at all costs, even if that cost is lack of advancement in training does anyone have any thoughts on this
  18. struggling in push hands

thanks for all the replies will keep with it plan to chat to my teacher this friday i will let you know what happens
  19. drunken fighting style

oneof the time that i was visiting the shaolin temple i heard a story that the drunken form was invented after a few incidences of drunk monks getting beaten. the drunken form to give people pause before attacking this is a nice story i suppose, i don't really believe it though hehehe
  20. Do You Train Martial Arts?

yeah TKD (well the ITF style anyway) comes from shotokan and follows alot of the forms up to about 1st degree black belt, reportedly the kicks come from Taekyon but that history has been all but lost with TKD practioners going for the flashy sport type kicking seen in the competitions, i have heard that the most direct line to traditonal Taekyon can be found in hapkido styles these days
  21. finishing qi gong

hi there again everyone quick question, how do you finish your qi gong practice usually i just stand or sit for a short time and let myself "re-enter" the world i have heard from other people that when they stidy qi going they find it very important to return their energy to the lower dan tien, one methos i have seen is clasping your hands together and pressing them to their dan tien. does anyone have any thoughts of this practice? or thoughts on how to finish a qi gong session?
  22. Do You Train Martial Arts?

currently studying yin style bagua and aikido, also hold a balck belt in traditional TKD, have dabbled in jujitsu and taiji stlyes
  23. He Jinbao's Bagua

hey there Sloppy Zhang yes, Yin stlye in a very rare art, and even alot of people who say they teach it don't they teach a Cheng variation. The Xie Peqi style of Baguazhang is a very large system larger than most, with the 8 animals and the 8 variation of each animal it can take a long time to learn if you are planning on the while system, Lion is usually taught first because it is the most yang of the animals and it's purpose apart from fighting is to strengthen bones and tendons. teaching techniques in Baguazhang vary from teacher to teacher obviously, but as far as i know Mr. He's methods is fairly tradiotional which is standing meditation, in the various animal forms single movement practice form practice applications I have checked out the dragon DVD and it seems to follow this pattern i am not sure how much actual fight he has in his classes, i have heard different accounts butni know that he always has shuai jiao jackets at the ready for the healing systems within Xie peqi's system, i believe that alot of them were not passed on. He Jinbao's knowledge or at least what he choooses t teach is the martial tradition of the art. i have no information as to who if anyone was the inheritor of the mediacal teachings of Dr. Xie
  24. meditation time

this is one of those question that in some of the internal arts forums has starte some debates and also has risen alot of egos but how long do you spend in mediation general i dont set a time limit, i don't use a countdown timer but rather a stop watch to check how long i have done and i hit around 30 mins of standing, wether this compares to other or not is fairly unimportant as we are all on our own path but some days i am really not in the mood, i stand or sit and can't seem to get centred or alined, i still get someof the feelings i get from the longer session but on these days i struggle to get to 10 mins, and this seems hardly worth the effort i usually go off and do something and sometime return to it later sometimes not so..... how long do you spending in meditation? how strict are you on your timing? how do you cope with the times when you just can't get in to it?
