Because the chinese observed the skys and combined the lunar most accurate calendar with the solar calendar. The chinese system has been correct for over 8000 years > remember the western solar calendar has never been right even after the romans change of julius and augustus (July and August) bringing the modern western calendar a bit closer with 12 months of the year but this does not account for actual planet movement that fluctuates every year ,meaning the new year does not fall on January 1st every year. The twelve year animal zodiac is a simplified version of the 60 year cycle and it is meant to be fun and easy to read. The reason the rat is first is because the ox and the rat had a disagreement on who would be first. The rat suggested he was bigger than the ox. The challenge was to decide who was bigger by walking through town and to let the people decide who was bigger. The ox was average size but the rat was actually big for a rat. The people decided the rat was indeed bigger compared to the average size ox. The feng shui calendar (60 year cycle) is the most accurate calendar known to man. Modern astronomy is based on the chinese system of antiquity. In the west it was believed that Gods moved the planets as opposed to simple observation. The mention of the pre christian systems as in Australia, eastern and western traditions the polar complete system of knowledge was well known. 2500 years ago the west split from the worldview with greek philosophy puting opposites into hostile opposing arrangement and rational mind as knower of all. ..... a major fail to understand or simple observe nature ...oh well shit happens.

My thumbs always dance naked in the moonlight except when it is super cold that's the exception to the rule.

Taoist rules of thumb.... end of story ,no discussion necessary. If you do not mind it doesn't matter. mind over matter. a matter of mind, what's the matter, mind what you matter, a matter of fact nothing is the matter, Maybe we can discuss the matter of taoist rules of thumb just for fun. Let's spin it forward and backward and hear perceptions of infinite angles and dance in the moonlight. Or not

There is an exception to every rule. There are no absolutes. yin is within yang and yang is within yin they (energies) are mostly themselves but not absolute. Change, situations, living and dynamic. If rules are absolute then it is a dead system meaning the living dynamic process has been removed. "Rules of thumb" besides being a very dark conception into our language may be true but not absolute. Follow Tao and rules vanish to dust rules do not apply to us personally the rules are us. Be exceptional and set the rules and examples for others to follow. lift up humanity for everyone to remember our divine true self..

Like ebony and ivory live together in perfect harmony. What a minute those are lyrics to a song. yin and yang live in perfect harmony they complete each other. when opposites are in separate camps and unrelated they become hostile to each other and rules are made. Man made rules allows things like cops and robbers to be partners or insurance co and medical system to hold hands or FDA and food industry to profit over the health of the people. Natures rules benefit all things not just the special interest groups or the people with pretend power and wealth. It is funny like a tragic comedy. Nature rules everything else is imitation

Taoist rule of thumb is that if we did not have a thumb we would not be able to grab things. Tao rules the the land. Tao actualy sets all the rules, fire rises, water sinks. Being, non being so if one is looking for actual rules we are living them on a daily basis. Thumbs make it possible to grab ahold of heaven and earth and exceed any rules made by men for their power is just for pretend.

It seems funny that when all the senses are actually interrelated and interdependent of each other it could possibly get all convoluted, unrelated and separate functions of one living thing. if we were dead and did not have spontaions systems of operation then maybe all of this would make more sense. why settle for 5 senses be an extraordinary living being The joy of science there is no unifying principle that relate to all other systems of science. When unified all vanishes to dust. -
Someone asked about 衛氣 Weiqi.
Wu Ming Jen replied to kevin_wallbridge's topic in Daoist Discussion
Yes, years of practice and hard work You will know these three chi then you can write a book in english. We can read about riding a bike but we need to get on the bike and ride to truly know what is written about bike riding. -

There are three Qi in the body: Wei Qi – defensive Qi, Yin Qi – nourishment Qi, and Zhong Qi – which protects the heart and lungs. The first movement of Shen Dian is to collect Qi. You see yourself as inside an eggshell. Go beyond your imagination and beyond the ordinary five senses of sensing, knowing, seeing and feeling. Try to see you internal body, go to the ethereal body. Clean out toxins in the ethereal body by washing out the body with fresh Qi – put the “dirty” energy into the earth. The Aura or “Chang” or field is the ethereal body. The Qi Chang + me is Qi is Tao. To heal you create a better internal environment. Bring in fresh energy, fresh “water” to cleanse and push toxic cells or energy. Refined oxygen is the killer of bad cells, it makes order in the cells. Increasing oxygen in the blood improves the immune system. -
In order to succeed to subdue the enemy in one move, you must practice every day. In one year you can achieve a foundation, in two years a small accomplishment, in 3-5 years a great accomplishment. During a stay in the temple, one has the opportunity to learn the practice method and requirements to achieve one of those true Gong Fu skills. The practice can be later taken back to one’s home country for further development. Some types of Gong need to be practiced at childhood. It is extremely laborious hard work. Gong Fu is the practice of your own supernatural and extraordinary abilities. Higher Gong Fu already surpasses the Gong Fu category as it is the practice of Qi and of special energetic fields, which does not come from jumping or bouncing around, but from the gain of sitting meditation and stillness cultivation. In the past times, without fire arms, only people who had Gong Fu could protect their own lives, their families’ lives and family belongings. Nowadays society is peaceful and calm and laws are firm, so our study of Gong Fu is for removing illnesses, for a strong body and healthy physique, to entertain and perform for the masses and to help others. In the end after successful refinement of your Gong Fu you must not compete for supremacy with others and you should not be fond of winning or injuring others.

I have pet owls they live outside. I hear them talking at night and see them in the trees. One morning a feather was left outside my front door for me to find. I have never actual petted the owls but some people have pets they do not pet. I like owls because owls are owls when people think of owls they must be mad owls become a symbol of what the person thinks and no longer an owl. This is how people become owls and owls become people. When owls see people do they think the human symbol is a bad omen or maybe a good omen or something in between. Mostly owls must think humans are weird for sleeping at night seems like a strange thing to do during breakfast time.

I have slept in all time intervals depending on circumstances and do not limit myself to specific sets of times. I have a natural rhythm of movement and stillness. Those who know what the right amount of time is for sleep is a dead system. I am alive so the dead system does not work for me. Activity leads to stillness so If one is very active then the appropriate amount of stillness is required with this system only you can actually know what is right. Sorry professionals of sleep study, getting paid should compensate for misleading and confusing people about what the right amount of sleep is.

The farmer and the horse One day his horse runs away. And his neighbor comes over and says, to commiserate, “I’m so sorry about your horse.” And the farmer says “Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?” The neighbor is confused because this is clearly terrible. The horse is the most valuable thing he owns. But the horse comes back the next day and he brings with him 12 feral horses. The neighbor comes back over to celebrate, “Congratulations on your great fortune!” And the farmer replies again: “Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?” And the next day the farmer’s son is taming one of the wild horses and he’s thrown and breaks his leg. The neighbor comes back over, “I’m so sorry about your son.” The farmer repeats: “Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?” Sure enough, the next day the army comes through their village and is conscripting able-bodied young men to go and fight in war, but the son is spared because of his broken leg. And this story can go on and on like that. Good. Bad. Who knows? To reach the other side of the river one needs a boat. On the other side one does not need a boat anymore. You may cross the great water is an auspicious outlook.

Why is light always in such a hurry?
Wu Ming Jen replied to Lost in Translation's topic in The Rabbit Hole
This makes total sense for people that are confused all the time, overthink everything and are unable to make decisions on their own. I am happy to hear it makes no sense yet poetic nailed it. -
Does anyone experience walls popping around them?

All this time I thought that minty fresh scent around me was a spiritual experience. Cabin life is the best life at least that is what the sign says above my door. -

I agree a lot of people have slow or burnt out brain processors. We are light. -
Why is light always in such a hurry?
Wu Ming Jen replied to Lost in Translation's topic in The Rabbit Hole
If we know something or sense something instantly that is faster than the speed of light. I would recommend this type of speed. Physically traveling at 186 thousand miles an hour our body would disintegrate rushing and hurry not so good. The formless body is the recommended vehicle for traveling to distant places then the light won't slow us down. Quantum entanglement moves faster than light. If I have two electrons close together, they can vibrate in unison, according to the quantum theory. If I then separate them, an invisible umbilical cord emerges which connects the two electrons, even though they may be separated by many light years. If I jiggle one electron, the other electron "senses" this vibration instantly, faster than the speed of light. Einstein thought that this therefore disproved the quantum theory, since nothing can go faster than light. But actually this experiment (the EPR experiment) has been done many times, and each time Einstein was wrong. Information does go faster than light, but Einstein has the last laugh. This is because the information that breaks the light barrier is random, and hence useless. (For example, let's say a friend always wears one red sock and one green sock. You don't know which leg wears which sock. If you suddenly see that one foot has a red sock, then you know instantly, faster than the speed of light, that the other sock is green. But this information is useless. You cannot send Morse code or usable information via red and green socks.) -

I live in a log cabin in the north east if the walls, ceiling and floors are not popping around me something is wrong. I expand, contract and pop as well. Occasionally I have thoughts that influence and create my reality. I am pretty sure this is normal. -
Is it true you pay a doctor to keep you healthy in China?
Wu Ming Jen replied to alchemystical's topic in Daoist Discussion
The united states has a healthcare crisis. looking at alternatives that work in other countries is worthwhile. We basically work for the government we pay taxes spending or making money. Money represents people and natural resources of a country. If the people are not healthy, cant afford the inflated doctor bills by the hand holding of insurance companies I would think this would not be in the best interest of the government. Without healthy people to work and harvest the resources is loss of funds. China's population dwarfs the west. The net worth of alibaba the chinese amazon we would need to combine the net worth of ebay amazon and apple to get close to that number. Any industry sales in china dwarfs the west total sales (US medicine is a business) just by population alone. China is extremely affordable to live in so the issue of healthcare is a non issue compared to the US. In other countries free healthcare is in the interest of the governments for good reasons. -
Self indulgence is that mastery of oneself? Indulgence alone means excess. hedonism leaves the center, the middle way leading one on a journey of the extremes of up down, in out, left right, pleasure pain and so on they are all connected and related. The tao fuses them all together from one's center. If one wishes to go to an extreme its opposite partner will introduce itself into our lives. To know when one has enough. Imagine being satisfied and complete without desire. The material life is not true gold. the material life has needs to attend to and is important but temporary. All forms shift and change, there and not there. The spiritual life is true gold, it is a treasure, the perspective exposes the true value of things. If a person is all ready spiritually wealthy they do not need to go to extremes to have wealth. Hedonism and pleasure seeking is the spirit searching the endless search, just got to tie that thing up. Just sit in the center and have it all just come to you with no need to chase after anything, What we desire is already full with nothing to seek. Possessing internal satisfaction, satisfaction is no longer needed. The upside is that things will attract to us and the way will open up, unobstructed and free. We know just what to do.

Being humane is not always humane. Say a kid kills people in a school "it" receives the death sentence for the crime this is a humane act. To protect a healthy society from people that harm it is a noble cause. Being human means divine when a human is no longer divine by their own actions they are no longer human. We could talk about non humans incapable of humaneness. Humaneness is a word with out gender, race or species but is built off of the word human which is species specific. Heading north you turn you back on the south Heading south you turn your back on the north insert any yin yang relationship good bad whatever. I read it as master chuang saying humanness is not ultimite it is limited in scope. Those with true humanness quickly discard it. They are so spiritually wealthy they have no need for humanness. Mostly I think the passage is an argument directed at the different schools of thought like saying true humanness is always humane. true kindness is always kind that is only partial understanding which dependis on the self to evaluate what's in it for me.

I have bought things from china on ebay delivery time varies, especially around chinese new year add other 15 days to get out of customs. US 9 eu 43 should fit. The mind blowing thing is that in china you can by those shoes for around $5 US. Some items that seem very inexpensive on ebay from China take a look at the shipping charge because that is were they get the amount of money you would expect to spend. Like the shoes BTW

To defeat self is definitely wizard level. Wood has fire inside it. If wood catches on fire the wood soon becomes dead ash, the flame extinguished. The unconquered self will burn up the body like fire on wood. True light does not depend on the body ( or wood) to burn because the source has no form or substance it does not run out or die. This light was before the body began to begin. This light does not burn up things like a body, unlike the fire of self. Self does not want the light to take back its proper position. Self needs a body to burn or it is not a self. Self has to remain seperate, have its own identity that is different and not related to all things or again it is just not itself any more. This is a sad story for self at the end of this story no one gets out alive. The other story is that there is nothing to die.
