Sleep Cycles

Recommended Posts

I've been wondering what different sleep cycles people have. Qi Gong practitioners are known to sleep less as they utilize energy more efficiently.

Naps anyone?

Yes, that's true. Also conscious meditating is deeply restful but it also burns more body energy than sleep at the same time.

My sleep cycle is off because of years of doing Night Audit in the hotel system.

You must've meditated while night auditing?

My sleep requirements are approx. 6 1/2 hours.

I do sometime take a noon-time nap and when I do my night-time requirements are less.

My body is pretty flexible as to when I sleep - adjustments my body made while I was in the military.

Happy Trails!

Good grief I hope not! I already sleep so little I'd hate to think qigong will reduce it even more! :(

It's different from sleep deprivation. You actually feel more energized throughout the day.

There is also this transition period the body goes through where you will only be able to sleep for 2-4 hours a night. Then you gradually revert to normal sleep cycles but notice a significant difference in the quality and quantity of sleep. Well, at least that's my experience.

Thanks! Good to know it will help with energy levels, I'm a rank beginner and am already starting to feel the energy after I finish Taiji class or do a particularly nice meditation.

I've been sleeping over 8 hours a night. Sometimes 11 hours a night. It feels great, and I have many nice dreams. Luckily for me, my schedule usually allows it.

In my practice, I've been healing sympathetic overstimulation as a result of being in the military. In other words - being "on edge".

Maybe in the later stages of practice (when someone could be considered accomplished), I will be able to sleep very little...but that is definitely not the case for right now.

I used to do qigong twice a day for some years and I got so much energy I started studying full time at the university, did a part time education as a therapist, as well as keeping 3 part-time jobs and participating in several projects. I slept only 4-5 hours a day for many years. But after a while I stopped my qigong practice because there simply wasn't time. Still I surfed on the acquired energy for many years but got so worn out at the end I had to stop everything and just sleep. I kept a normal job, and just slept and did qigong in the afternoon.

So I took up my qigong practice again and have been healing myself now for the last two years. I'm back to normal energy level now, but will certainly not stop until I'm back to 4-5 hours sleep and full of energy.

And I have also learned not to stop my qigong practice!

Back then I did some medical qigong I don't know the name of. It was just called "medical qigong". It included Zhan Zhuang. Now I do Xing Shen Zhuang and Zhan Zhuang.

The medical qigong included the three circles(belly, heart, head). Nowdays I mostly just do Wuji and Hold the Belly.
