Paul Jay of The Real News speaks at the Von Krahl Academy, Estonia in November 2008

(note the date of talk as some of the info is out-dated)

A 39 minute video...

Some quotes from the video:

"The Real News Network, the fundamental idea of it, is to change the economics of journalism. What we believe is that for-profit journalism leads to compromised journalism ... it's worst on television. When you deal with commercial pressures ... news that's superficial, ... We'll question assumptions and to do that you need independent economics."

"The short of it is that the political process is paralyzed in most of our countries ... and the media creates a false narrative of our lives which re-enforces this paralysis. So what we're trying to do is break this monopoly on daily news..."

"We want to do a lot of coverage about solutions. We think that as much as this period is dangerous, we don't want to do news that after you watch it you just want to blow your brains out. ... We want to make solutions-news. ... There are rational solutions that can be found. ... We are going to make solutions news."

"There is no such thing as terrorism as a thing in itself. There are very specific political forces that use terrorist tactics. So, the terrorism of Hezbolla, or Hamas in its fight with Israel, is a very different thing ... than what Al Queda did. There's very different political forces at work here. ..."

 yes, join the pig pile on capitalism  that's along the same line of reasoning that a free market cant provide good healthcare - no basis in reality when myriad external factors are influencing this way and that, and legislators are more interested in keeping their special interests happy instead of their constituents - just as most "news" is interested in keeping their special interests happy instead of their readership at large. there's one issue with regard to the news, and its the extreme lack of journalistic integrity and objectivity. that's what happens when ego winds up coming before morality. to overtly link this to capitalism is simply jumping in along with what's fashionable right now - so where's this guy's journalistic integrity? haha, okay, he's a filmmaker, say no more...
