Welcome to the new Chinese language forum

Recommended Posts

We've been bouncing the idea around for a Chinese language forum for The Tao Bums and have decided to give it a go.

Depending on it's popularity and other factors I may or may not move this as a subforum of Taoist Discussion. But for now I'm giving it it's own place.

I am told the Chinese character title translates more or less to, "A forum where a community of Daoists talk to each other and learn from each other, resulting in a new body of knowledge that is connected to but not limited by the old traditions."

Perfect.

This is a bit of risk at this point since none of the core moderators here read Chinese. So anyone who can read/write Chinese that wants to pitch in a bit for moderation here I would really appreciate it, just pm me.

And anyone able, feel free to translate this message for me. :)

Thanks! Enjoy!

Deep Bow.

Sean

Hi Sean. Sounds good although I am still not clear what the exact the purpose of this forum is.

I would translate " 道家学说" as 'Taoist Theory', but I am just a beginner student in Chinese. :)

Can you elaborate a bit on what the purpose of ths forum is? Is it meant to help clarify Taoist

terms, concepts, theory and writings from their original Chinese to English? Or is it meant as a Taoist

discussion area in the Chinese language?

Best wishes...

:)

[Edit: Tried to clarify my question. ]

Thanks Sean for setting it up and thanks to taobums like Little1, Excorcist, etc for suggesting it, I'm very excited!

Iskote, it's whatever people would like... I'm hoping that it can be an extension of threads like this: http://www.thetaobums.com/index.php?&a...;f=1&t=3075 .

Also, I'm hoping that taobums use it to just chat about whatever using Chinese characters.

Yoda, Sean, thanks so much. Next move is to announce all the Chinese students, amateurs, native speakers, with interest in Daoist cultivation and Chinese culture. Much of it depends on them... we, as beginners, can do too little for it. But as little as we can do, I'll try to do it...!

Yoda, yo da man :D

Tao Toe,

Yoda

So it is really a general discussion area regarding the Chinese language, and helping people who want to learn it, and not really so much about Taoist theory and related? Since the main Taoist discussion forum here

is about general discussion of a wide range of topics, it seems to me that it mght be nice to limit this

forum's discussion topics to learning and understanding and discussing Chinese as it relates directly to Taoism and Taoist theory and practices. It seems to me that by limiting the discussion topics, the forum would then be

more useful for people who are struggling with Taoist terms and concepts and theory in Chinese, and who want to get a better understanding of such.

If the topic of this forum is just discussing Chinese and discussions in Chinese, then maybe the forum name

should be changed to something like Chinese Language Discussion (中文讨论) or something like that. :) Personally I would find a forum that is restricted to understanding and discussing Chinese terms, theory, and

writings as directly relates to Taoism very useful. Without having to sift through all kinds of other off topic

posts one could focus on getting a better understanding of Chinese as it relates Taoism, and thus hopefully gain a better understanding of Taoism It sounds like others here would like the forum to be a general Chinese language discussion forum from what you are saying though.

Either way, it should be helpful for those trying get a better understanding of Chinese. :)

By the way, what does 'Tao Toe' mean? I assume that is Cantonese?

Best wishes...

:)

If my opinion means anything which I don't expect it to mean anything special at all but I would have to strongly agree that their seems to be a want or a need for translations of Chinese to better understand Taoist terms, concepts.

I don't personally mention theory because I feel it can be a pretty slippery road translating whole theories although I'm not voting against it. I would encourage it rather, and patiently and respectfully participate in the discussions. What I am saying is concepts within theories may want to be explained. For the average westerner interested in Taoism whom is not a lineage holder within a Taoist sect can easily misguide others.

I still couldn't agree with you anymore. Iskote you so gracefully post your concerns about the topic.

I am excited to find the appearance of this Chinese Forum. I think anything related to Chinese Taoism , language and culture can be chatted here in Chinese or English . It seems someone who can read Chinese should act as a moderator so that postings of commercial and pornographic messages will not appear here . Me seems to be inappropriate to do the job as all know what my "ideological " inclination is , and will doubt my impartiality. Besides , to my understanding , there are not few members here who can read Chinese.

Maybe this forum can also perform as a platform where people can learn Chinese through some simple Taoist poems and sayings . Simple doesn't necessarily mean shallow, for Taoist truth is always expressed in two and three simple sentences .

Nice to see you here Exorcist.

Guys, I'd like to make a suggestion: everytime we write something in Chinese, we should write the transliteration also, preferably Pinyin. It's much easier to learn and search for an unknown character this way.

Thanks quite a bunch :)

( I am definitely not any kind of master, yet I am pleased to discuss with people about Taoism )

I agree,

Sean, if there is a way to make Chinese characters by default a few font sizes larger, it would be considerably easier on the eyes.

Yes, you can use bigger size of font.

It seems we can add some HTML codes into the message we write in order to control what we want to show ?

Yes we can manually make the characters larger. However, I wonder if there's a way to make the default characters a bit larger

差不多这么大(3号)就很舒服

It it possible to default to say, size 3 like the above characters?
