Meditating in a graveyard

Recommended Posts

Yeah so the thought came up awhile ago.. But in cases like doing qi gong or meditating during the full moon I was wondering if theres any do's and dont's.

Basically is it safe? Is there any benefit?

Thanks.

Fuck that shit man

Don't do impermanence when you can do transformation.

Better to go to the gym and go lift weights.

Ignoring the previous post product of excess testosterone, there is nothing wrong with meditating in a graveyard as long as there are no major emotional blockages in you otherwise you'll be calling yourself for big trouble. Aside from that, mosquitoes were an issue that deterred me from this sort of practice as I live in a semi-tropical area.

Good luck!

I think meditating on impermanence takes a slight precedence over going to the gym.

Puts one on guard in the truth that death can happen at any moment.

In the local news last week: 50year old teacher was out for her routine evening power walking. A truck drove past her, accidentally hitting and severing an outgrown tree branch, which then fell and hit the poor woman. She died 3 days later from her injuries.

Pretty sure there are many more similar incidents that we have all heard about, alas they have yet to bring us any closer to the realization that clinging to this body can be a source of much agony and distress.

Indian yogis used to meditate in graveyards all the time. Padmasambhava did that in his early days to meditate on impermanence.. Today a lot of Kali worshipers do rituals in graveyards to invite Kali and master death. It's an interesting meditation spot but I'm probably not ready for that :ninja:

Guest C Yu C He Taiji

I remember Christopher Lee Matsuo mentioning on one of his dvds that it is particularly helpful to meditate in a graveyard in order to practice the Kunlun fying needles skill, which helps you diagnose and treat ailments in humans and spirits/ghosts. If you do it succesfully you can feel the spirit you are working with getting lighter and then ascending. He did not mention any dangerous sideeffects from practicing in the graveyard.

Well I'm not very advanced but I've meditated in graveyards a few times and didn't experience any negative effects. In fact, I found it an uplifting way to honor the dead. Next time I want to try primordial qigong in a graveyard.

yeh! Graveyards are great, I love them. Meditate there, of course. Eat Pizza there too. The dead are just us, a bit further down the road.

Nothing wrong with meditating in a graveyard, in my opinion. Nothing wrong with going to the gym either.

Meditation can be done anywhere because meditation is basically the detaching from anywhere.

I go and meditate at my grandfather's grave every so often. Last time I was there I got a sense he's on his next 'assignment' already...

Ajahn Chah one meditated in a graveyard to remove fear from his mind. Its a good idea. I will try it out once too. Already, I've spent time alone in remote and dark areas of the jungle near my place. And it does help in making you stronger. Stronger mind is more conducive for other practices.

Do you want to practice the golden bowl of abominations or the golden bowl of jewels?

Remember that it is the THREE JEWELS, NOT THE THREE DAMN ABOMINATIONS.

Here is the big one.

This is Fifth Path:

Morality is the first AND LAST TRAINING. THAT MEANS GIVING GOOD THINGS TO YOUR SELF, TO PEOPLE AND PRACTICING COMMON SENSE. THIS IS GOING BACK TO EARTH. JESUS AND SHAKYAMUNI WERE DECLARED BY EARTH, NOT HEAVEN.

I cleared fourth when I was ten years old. I did that with wholesome indifference

(slight smile)...too lazy to use facial muscles, avoiding the church,

not letting most events live past there freaking shelflife, and trying to be

a general nice guy. NO MEDITATION and the only thing used was MUNDANE EVERYDAY

SITUATIONS.

THERE WAS NO MEDITATION UPON DEATH.

Be careful what you suggest because there might be higher self in play

and he or she may not appreciate it.

Impermanence may also be defined as inconstant, an event not lasting, or vibrating,

changing, building or reducing. Impermanence IS CHANGE.

Permanence is something THAT DOES NOT CHANGE.

Use common sense, if you are on a battlefield in another realm, are you going

to help the person that is hurt or are you going to make them "meditate upon

death"?

Also, DAMNING your family is not part of Fifth Path.

Face facts, you don't know if those behaviors are

"old programming" or if they come from somewhere else.

Better to look at porn and rub out one and call it..."meditation upon life".

Some times hard to know when the time is right...

Indeed.

Thanks all really. I understand both points of why or why not meditating in a graveyard is a bad idea.. I've pretty much sided with it being fine.. Thing is I dont have so much of a philosophy in mind when I think about meditating in a graveyard..

When I typed this I had more the energy of a grave yard and the benefit someone might receive. The doing it would be a lesson in itself.

I understand others that might disagree though. thats fine.

Yep. I think that one of the 'goals' of meditation is to remove ourself (temporarily) from the manifest world. So I would think that meditation somewhere that has negative mamifest connotations would be an excellent way of testing our thoroughness of meditation.

I don't see meditation as removing oneself from the world. Rather, I see it as IMMERSING oneself in the world, CONSCIOUSLY.

Most of the graveyard practices I heard about were meditating in charnel grounds where the bodies are left to decay. In these cases, you'd look at the bodies and realize that your body was no different.

Hehehe. That's okay. We already know that we do not agree on a few concepts.

But, just so any other reader understands what I was referring to:

Yo is the manifest world.

Wu is the unmanifest (or spiritual).

Our every-day life is lived in Yo.

When we meditate we seek solitude and rest in Wu.

So for me meditation is setting aside the material world and resting in the spiritual.

When I finish my meditation and return to the material world hopefully I leave one foot securely planted in the spiritual.

So, for me, a graveyard, not being a place of life, would be an excellent place to realize the impermanance of life in Yo.

Peace & Love!

Take a few days off to think about things.

After receiving the bowl of abominations for 2 1/2 years upfront, and some really fucked

up shit since I could remember (3 years old?). I will never even let somebody practice

something that has extremely high risks without letting them know what they can bring on to themselves. Mind you, I've asked people to stop serving me

garbage and it hasn't stopped.

3 years old and I'm getting hit with fucked up shit??? I don't think so

I got banned for my earlier statement. I apologize for offending your sensitivities

but I will offer nothing but my HIGHEST TRUTH, which comes from common sense.

I wouldnt just go and meditate in any graveyard simply because it was a graveyard. I go to my grandfather's for a reason, conditions are already there and I am not seeking to establish conditions with random spirits. I offer my merit as thank you for the great influence he had on me :)

Very valid reasoning, IMO.

Actually you got suspended from posting for a few days not banned.

Everyone is welcome, and encouraged, to clearly voice opinions. Lino's above post is the 1st one that actually helped me make sense of what he was trying to say.

Personally the profanity and language choice is making your message rather confusing and difficult for me to decipher. But I do believe I get what you are trying to say.

Thanks
