3bob Posted May 3, 2010 just tell us how you really feel, bob. lol ... Again? Ok: Music that is like a consuming swarm of locusts and which draws on twisted types of power from the abyss has nothing to do with the ways of Tao or Purity and kindness of Spirit, granted it does have a certain hypnotic (such as head banging) fascination to it until its demonic motive and hunger is really seen, known and felt for what it is... (and by then it may be to late for several karmic go arounds, since forfeiting out to such a piper enables it to exact a certain price, and there is nothing sophisticated, artisic, mystical, wise or of balanced mind and emotion in falling for that which can be likened to an "underwater mortage" of one's lifeforce and humanity)

dwai Posted May 5, 2010 (edited) I always wonder which attitude have Taoists towards heavy metal music? Do you consider it disturbing for a mind? Or metal is quite the contrary - thing that helps you to get rid of the negative energy and emotions? too much chaos is not good for stillness... Meditation is to bring about stillness...which is the opposite of what Heavy Metal is all about. Things/factors that affect me in my practice because of which I don't listen to much music are: 1) if music is aggressive, it increases heat in the body and thereby agitating the mind. 2) if there is a specific riff or piece of music that gets "into" my ear, then it keeps playing over and over, and distracts during meditation (for instance, the song titled "Home" in Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory -- Metropolis II album) I like this better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxyaWdBphls&feature=related Edited May 5, 2010 by dwai

Gigi Posted May 5, 2010 I am in my 50's and I played in a metal band all last year until February of this year but taking a break right now. I don't like to listen to the stuff but it is quite fun to play (weird huh?). Usually when I listen to music it is native flute music. It is chaotic but the key to staying in harmony is to kind of ride it like a wave, kinda like a surfer. Compliments! You are a true Rock!!!!!!!! sifusufi Posted May 6, 2010 This should activate everyone's erector pili ! "This is a cover of the song by Black Sabbath, but the original lyrics are replaced by words of protest by Chief Seattle, also known as Sealth, Seathle, Seathl, or See-ahth. He was a leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish Native American tribes in what is now the U.S. state of Washington." How can you buy or sell the sky Or the warmth of the land it's strange to us We don't own the freshness of the air Or the sparkle of the water How can you buy them from us The white man doesn't understand our ways For he's a stranger who comes in the night And takes from the land just what he needs Oh yeah He treats his brothers like his enemies When it's completed he moves on He leaves his father's grave and his birthright His birthright is forgotten The air is precious to the red man For all things share the same breath The white man won't notice the air he breathes Like a man dying for many days All right now The whites must treat the beasts of his land As his brothers not his enemies Tell me what is man without the beasts I'll bet he will die of loneliness One thing we know that the white man will We know our god is the same god You may think you wish to own him Own him as you wish to own our land But he is the body of man And the earth is precious to him Continue to contaminate your bed And you will suffocate in your waste
Oleg Galkin Posted May 6, 2010 Personally, I find metal can be quite helpful when working with kundalini. The good stuff can really clean and clear out the emotional bodies. Our own Vajrasattva, Santiago, is the lead guitarist for a metal band, Aghora. They are getting ready to release their third CD. He sent me a couple of the new tracks to review. They are awesome. Santi is a tantric yogi and he does place empowerments and transmissions in the music. Santi is the one with the real long hair. Santi is also a session musician/producer. When my kundalini was starting to rise I liked the Lords of Acid. Works well with the opening of the lower chakras. s Wow. Thank you for the new bands. I appreciate it! It is chaotic but the key to staying in harmony is to kind of ride it like a wave, kinda like a surfer. That's kinda how I see it I dont listen to much of it anymore, my head is mostly buried in my own music. Its impossible to find a good metal singer, too. What the hell makes them come up with the words they do is beyond me! Usually the vocals sound just like another instrument to me and the words barely ever reveal themselves. Making a guitar sing, though...now there's something special. that cross dresser was sloppy

Mutualist Posted May 7, 2010 8. Learning To Live DREAM THEATER [images: Dream Theater] [Words: Myung] There was no time for pain No energy for anger The sightlessness of hatred slips away Walking through winter streets alone He stops and take a breath With confidence and self- control I look at the world and see no understanding I'm waiting to find some sense of strength I'm begging you from the bottom of my heart to show me understanding I need to live life Like some people never will So find me kindness Find me beauty Find me truth When temptation brings me to my knees And I lay here drained of strength Show me kindness Show me beauty Show me truth The way your heart sounds makes all the difference It's what decides if you'll endure the pain that we all feel The way your heart beats makes all the difference In learning to live Here before me is my soul I'm learning to live I won't give up Till I've no more to give Listening to the city Whispering its violence I set out watching from above The 90s bring new questions New solutions to be found I fell in love to be let down Once again we dance in the crowd At times a step away From a common fear that's all spread out It won't listen to what you say Once you're touched you stand alone To face the bitter fight Once I reached for love And now I reach for life Another chance to lift my life Free the sensation in my heart To ride the wings of dreams into changing horizons It brings inner peace within my mind, As I'm lifted from where I've spilt my life I hear an innocent voice I hear kindness, beauty and truth The way your heart sounds makes all the difference It's what decides if you'll endure the pain that we all feel The way your heart beats makes all the difference In learning to live Spread before you is your soul So forever hold the dreams within our hearts Through nature's inflexible grace I'm learning to live
beyondillusion Posted May 8, 2010 (edited) What a great thread! I am still enjoying my metal music and I am in my 50th yr of Earth Life!!! I remember my Mum telling me when I was 17 I'd grow out of it!!! OOPS!!! Sorry Mum, I'm still going strong! One of top 5 all time bands are Magnum who hail from Birmingham in the UK, they are not metal, but progressive/pomp rock; the songwriter is the very talented Tony Clarkin. They have been around for at least 30 yrs, and here is a cracking song by the guys Song is "On A Storytellers Night". Also in the same vein as Magnum are Marillion, and their former singer Fish who has his own band. Both are well worth listening to. Turning up the volume and my all time number 1 favorite band are Judas Priest! These guys are the Metal Gods, and know how to rock and put on a great show! My favorite songs include, The Sinner, Victim of Changes, Beyond The Realms of Death, Metal Gods, Nostradamus and Before The Dawn. Great energy boosting music! Other bands I listen to include Pantera, RATM, SOAD, Metallica, The Doors, Slayer and UFO. Sometimes I listen to heavy metal when I'm writing my poetry as I find it helps me to stay in the creative zone, plus the changing emotions that come from the music are constructive for my writing. Thanks to Oleg for starting this thread off! Namaste, Lenny Edited May 8, 2010 by beyondillusion
beyondillusion Posted May 8, 2010 Ahh! some Leonard Cohen fans I see! Brilliant! When I was 12 I was introduced to Leonard Cohen, the album was Songs of Love and Hate(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_of_Love_and_Hate); instantly I fell in love with Cohen's voice and lyrics! However it wasn't until 2008 that I first saw this humble genius live in Birmingham, UK! Whe LC was touring in the UK I was away and so missed my chances to see him then, and then last yr LC came to Liverpool and I saw him again! I have been truly blessed!!! My favorite Cohen song is Ballad of the Absent Mare:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp7XP37vgU0 Such a beautiful song. From the album Recent Songs(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recent_Songs), and in my humble opinion a masterpiece!!! Namaste, Lenny
sifusufi Posted May 11, 2010 Good to see some Dream Theater here! One thing I learned from the masters of improvisation is that all to often we throw away ideas, motifs, phrases, without giving them a chance for development or fruition. I see that happen to much with threads on Da Bums! sifusufi Posted May 29, 2010 Da Mo could have used some good Maiden to toughen up dem warriors! Once on board their touring plane, the stage-weary band collapsed around a video of Little Richard belting out "Tutti Frutti" in the 1957 film The Girl Can't Help It. Perhaps reminiscing how he modeled the opening riff of "Black Dog" after Richard's "Keep A Knockin'," Jimmy Page raised a toast: "No escaping our roots." http://www.youtube.c...feature=related Reminds me of being a kid at 5th & Buchannan Gary,Ind circa 1972 Come on laugh a little ( or lots) ya gotta love it! Anyone recognise James Remar as Harry (Dexter's dad?) My address fall 07'- winter 08' was 222 E. 22nd st. NYC. The old turf of the(fictional) Gramercy Riffs...only yuppie kids reside there now. BeckoningThePneuma Posted May 5, 2011 (edited) Time for a thread resurrection. I have been into metal music for many years. It's great to see Aghora here, their work is especially apt for those into Hinduism and Buddhism. In fact, they're probably the best for metal which focuses on Eastern philosophy. A lot of people tend to think of metal music as being quite irreligious, and though it started off that way, it's certainly not anymore. There are plenty of metal bands who write about spirituality, philosophy, religion and nature. Not that many that write about Taoism though! My belief, as a fan of the genre, is that it's not about how music is portrayed, but what is being portrayed. I generally refuse to listen to anti-theistic lyrics... but they're easy to avoid in metal. There are plenty of bands singing about other things. EDIT: Apparently there is a metal band that sings about Taoism called DeathTouch... but the Taoism line sounds more of a gimmick rather than a genuine interest.
