This was on the documentary cable channel last night around midnight.

 

So basically Bikram started a yoga competition with the goal of getting yoga into the Olympics.

 

Then Bikram sent out "cease and desist" legal warnings to anyone teaching yoga asanas included in his routine which he copyrighted.

 

So then the independent yoga studios had to hire a lawyer.

 

They won the legal battle thus far so then new yoga chains popped up -- including one started by the AskJeeves owners....

 

Then the independent yoga studios went out of business.

 

One instead started a meditation retreat center for more serious yoga as 24 hour meditation long-term....

 

Apparently yoga is an estimated 18 billion a year industry (18 million people paying $1000 a year).... more than Coca cola sales....

If anyone is serious about yoga or practices of any kind and their true meaning/what the commitment needs to be, they should read 'Sivananda Buried Yoga' by Yogi Manmoyanand. He doesn't spare anyone

Chris I had forgotten about the Onion spoof. Excellent -- and your recent article on martial arts competitions was great as well.

 

Last night I saw "The One" on cable -- Jet Li does the Matrix a la "Run Lola Run" (multiverse).... cheesy but full of adrenaline.
