What is the GOAL of your cultivation?

Recommended Posts

I think there is quite a varied set of goals on this forum:

I mostly see three types of people:

A. People who want to improve their lives or cure some sort of problem

B. People who want metaphysical explanations for thing

C. People interested in metaphysics and interested in acquisition of "powers" found in folklore

My question is this:

For you, what's your personal reason for this interest?

Having moved to China to study martial arts and taoism more in depth, It really made me realize what I really want and what i'm actually after.

IMHO if you are after "powers" or 4 hr / day cultivation, having a family is probably not for you. Nor is having a vibrant social life in addition to being able to work a job.

So at what point do we say "this is enough" ?

I right now realize that at some point in my life I will have a family, I'll be someone's neighbor, I'll be barbecue-ing. What then is the point of this "other" stuff? Beyond the most basic/profound qualities of Taoism (inner tranquility despite what's going on outside), is anything else useful?

My goal would be to never be sick in my life again, cause I have been sick for 10 years. So to cure myself whenever I need.

My goal would also be to never be anxious or worried again. To be fully confident in everything I do.

My goal would also be to always be as happy no matter what happens. To enjoy life as it is.

Then to move to China after my studies, but not to find a job or make a family but to practice the whole day. I want to reach enlightenment. Which path I will take is not really clear... But the zen or tibetan path doesnt have anything to do with my kungfu-taiji-qigong practicing, so it has to be something in China. Southern-China, because I have always been drawn to warm places in the south. I have always dreamed of getting out of this cold Europe.

When I went to Bali two months ago for 3 weeks I got so in love with it. I wanted to stay there forever. I met this shaman who finally cured me in just one session after 10 years of sickness. In Europe I went to like 50 specialists during these 10 years who just gave me pills that didn't work AT ALL. But then when I got back to Europe I got sick again, because I still wasn't very immune.

So want I have to do is find the master or temple which is best appropriate to my path. Maybe not a master, because I'll have to get a job to be able to pay him and everything.

I would be glad to hear some advices from people who know more than me about this.

Cheers

What exactly do you need help with specifically?

What exactly do you need help with specifically?

If you travel to China to find a spiritual path, how do you find one? Where do you go? Where do you start? The unknown is scary. I have to be really lucky to find a good master that is willing to teach just from pure coincidence...

I know someone who was monk at the Shaolin Temple for 5 years, but that was at the time there wasn't many tourists there. Now it's just a show off temple. But how about the Wutang Mountains?

To end the cycle of rebirth, either via Taoist immortality, eternal death, or some other means.

Really one of my main goals is to develop a profound ability to see what's wrong with a person, and be able to heal it in a profound way. To be able to help. This goal has become especially strong since I've started clinical rotations in the ER.

Hi there,

Oh I love this thread, very, very good. You really got me going... Ok, I am a BC person myself all the way to your last word. That was great...

OK... I am at that stage in my life that you are talking about. I am 39, eight year old, been married 13 years, perfect person to fit this profile. Now I think that as you get older your longing to know these things become more important. After all this is our gaol not to leave this body not knowing any more than when you got in it, would be a shame.

There is so much out there. I have received just a little look at it, just a taste. But enough to say. I know my soul is not old, not very young. But I have so much to learn, before I die. And I'm excited, and so should you be. It is wonderful. You are alive, and healthy, and have a chance to grow your mind. Thank God, or who you do for this chance. And he gave us a brain to us. It is a shame, so many people don't even care, or wonder. Wonder my friend. Be excited...Tell the end.

You friend Melanie

Scotty,

You are something else.. Cool your a good person. I seem to be complimenting you every day. I hope you reach that goal. To help others is so rewarding isn't it? I love to help people myself.

You are most likely already blessed with a "healing touch" and you work in the ER wow... How blessed people will be to receive your care. I have been told I have a healing touch. When you hug someone do you feel there pain? Thats how it is with me. Empath also. So I could never work in the ER. But I am proud of you. Hope you get to where you need to be...

Your friend Mel

The sage carries no goal, to tread the path of the Way is the goal in itself; the goal is the path, but the path is not the goal, not the destination, and the path is now, in this very present moment, not the future.

But for the sake of the thread, a conscious goal of my cultivation is to be One with the Tao, merge my spiritual consciousness away from the ego and back unto the realm of cosmic/universal consciousness. It's singular, people. You are One, you are All. The ego has deluded you into subject and object, greater and lesser, one into two.....

You can do 4 hours per day if you sleep 5-6 hours, even though you have a job and a family. Indeed you will have less social life but that's just the way it is.

So at what point do we say "this is enough" ?

when we stop seeking.

There's no giving up, you keep on cultivating and when you are "done" you start helping others.

I'm curious where in China you have moved to find quality Taoist teachings as I spent nearly 2 years in China and didn't find anything but commercial malarkey.

Regarding your questions. To understand the different techniques of building and circulating qi. To understand Yin/Yang and Heaven and Earth.

Best,

The sweet thing about everyone's goal is that the world is going to help you in any way to reach that goal, so you really don't have to worry about it, but in the present moment do everything your heart tells you and some day you will reach it. So the goal is in every moment and you can feel it. No need to want to reach that goal as your whole life already IS that goal. It's like you have already reached it!

My first aim is to become an emotionally mature adult with a balanced mind, because in my day to day life I see very few of these around if any. Then from there if I get there to help others to do that too, then I hope to become more and more free from restrictions and limitations

I started Qigong because I had a few different goals. The number one goal of mine was and is emotional and sexual health, balance, and stability. The reason being, it has been these issues that have been the most problematic for me in my life. When I began Qigong I was on anti-depressants, sex obsessed, and felt like crap. I also got into it because I was taking Karate and wanted to be a bad-ass fighter, and had heard that Qigong could make you that way. I also felt rather lost in life and was hoping Qigong could help me to gain some perspective as well.

Since that time I no longer take anti-depressants, have dropped the desire to be a bad-ass as my emotionas have balanced out. Sex may still be a little tricky at times, but I am no where near as obessed with it as I was before I began. Yet there is still a lot of progress to be made, yet I feel confident now that I can make progress since I have already made so much.

One more reason is because I can not afford medical insurance, so I have used Qigong to keep both myself and my children healthy, and I pretty much do not need to bring them to the Dr anymore.

Wudang is just as big of a tourist trap as Shaolin. It's run by the government for tourism.

This is awesome -- the same as my personal reason for trying to teach myself to meditate starting when I was 13.

"I see very few of these around if any..." Couldn't agree more, and the amount of power you carry when the inside stays undisturbed regardless of the outside is incredible.

Best,

Sorry -- I don't know how to put multiple quotes in one post, I kept messing it up.

The answer to your question: I haven't. I've only just arrived a few weeks ago and I'm going to be spending the next year training and improving chinese. I'll take it from there.
