exorcist_1699 Posted October 27, 2010 (edited) It is strange to think that qi should be polished on high mountains or in deep caves, on the contrary , qi should be polished among the mass, in the society as a Chinese saying already tells us :" 小隐隐于野,大隐隐于市" ( "Real retreat is to hide among the crowd ,not in the wilderness" ) Edited October 27, 2010 by exorcist_1699
Procurator Posted October 27, 2010 no, that is not what the saying says at all. it says: a small retreat is in wilderness, a big one is in the market. it stands to reason that you have to start with small before being able to handle big.

xHSG Posted December 23, 2010 It is strange to think that qi should be polished on high mountains or in deep caves, on the contrary , qi should be polished among the mass, in the society as a Chinese saying already tells us :" 小隐隐于野,大隐隐于市" ( "Real retreat is to hide among the crowd ,not in the wilderness" ) The best scenario was described by Zhou Xuanyun a Wudang priest. We need to "polish" our qi in the quite of the mountains to reach a deeper level, but then we need to come down from the mountains and work at applying this attainment in the world. After a time we should return to the mountains to once again strive toward a new refinement and then come down to the world again. This alternation of stillness and action as a way of life manifests the ideals of yin and yang, allowing for both asceticism and engagement.
ChiDragon Posted May 29, 2011 (edited) It is strange to think that qi should be polished on high mountains or in deep caves, on the contrary , qi should be polished among the mass, in the society as a Chinese saying already tells us :" 小隐隐于野,大隐隐于市" ( "Real retreat is to hide among the crowd ,not in the wilderness" ) 小隐隐于野,大隐隐于市 I believe the correct translation is: Small retreat is in the wilderness, big retreat is in the city. ChiDragon Posted August 3, 2011 It is strange to think that qi should be polished on high mountains or in deep caves, on the contrary , qi should be polished among the mass, in the society as a Chinese saying already tells us :" 小隐隐于野,大隐隐于市" ( "Real retreat is to hide among the crowd ,not in the wilderness" ) To a Taoist, 天人合一(human and heaven united as One) is the most basic fundamental philosophy. The thought about going to the high mountains was being able to be close to Nature. The air are much fresher there than the city. Mountains are quiet for serenity. Especially in a green area, there are an abundant source of Chi. Hence, it is a good place to cultivate Chi.
