idquest Posted November 13, 2010 Women who drink just two glasses of orange juice a day are twice as likely to get gout, scientists claim. Here is the full article. THis is one of few articles where it is said that fruit are actually bad for health.
suninmyeyes Posted November 13, 2010 I eat mostly fruit , and sometimes eat oranges and drink orange juice only all day,as they are so yummy right now. Accordingly I should be one big gout itself. IMO it is a food combination that can bring on this problems.
Non Posted November 13, 2010 well I read somewhere that unripe fruit (even if it's ripened off the tree) can leech nutrients from the body, and Especially citrus fruit.
suninmyeyes Posted November 13, 2010 (edited) Yes, sure unripe fruit is bad for you and it tastes horrible. Some fruit does ripen off the tree well ,without causing any problems . edit:forgot to finish the sentence..,time to go and sleep Edited November 13, 2010 by suninmyeyes

A.I. Posted November 15, 2010 I'd like to add two cents here: the article you linked to, posted on the mail online, tip-toed around the high fructose corn syrup, which is the main cause of gout in this case and main ingredient in both soda and so-called "orange juice." high fructose corn syrup, which is not naturally occurring in oranges, but is added to juice and soda, leads to high uric acid levels (all fructose does really but high fructose corn syrup is the "evil" one) and high uric acid levels often lead to gout. so if you're going to have juice, make it organic unpasteurized or home-squeezed and you'll have far far less to worry about. goldisheavy Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) There is no good or bad food. Anything in moderation is good. Anything that's over the top is bad. A little pepper is good. A lot of pepper can get you a stomach cancer. A little water is good. A lot of water gives you water poisoning. A little fat is good, and a lot just clogs your arteries. The key is to eat some of everything in moderation. Forget all this bullshit about food being good or bad for you. Food is neither good nor bad. Fat is essential too. Ask any survivalist. What will you eat in the wilderness? Fat is the number one thing to eat and to store for future eating. What hurts people is the fact that in modern society we have too much of everything and people can't moderate. The "science" that goes into these studies is highly suspicious too. All these "discoveries" like coffee is good, then coffee is bad, beer is good/bad, it's all nonsense because scientists cannot control for every variable, it is impossible. They try, but they can't. It's impossible to even imagine all the variables that add up to cause a disease. Those two glasses of OJ is just one of a million variables, and unless the scientists are controlling for the other million or two million variables, the study is bullshit. Just use common sense and stop fear mongering. Edited November 15, 2010 by goldisheavy
A.I. Posted November 15, 2010 Just use common sense and stop fear mongering. it's only frightening if you feel powerless about it. it's empowering if you have control over it. we can only control things we understand. and by increasing our understanding, little by little, we are empowering ourselves. so it's not fear mongering and please don't call it that. goldisheavy Posted November 15, 2010 (edited) it's only frightening if you feel powerless about it. No, fear mongering happens when they say things like "OJ can cause gout" without any real evidence ("scientists" use statistics as "evidence" in every type of study like this one). it's empowering if you have control over it. That's not necessarily true. Trying to control things too much creates anxiety and it is not whatsoever empowering. It is empowering to drink OJ however much you want, as long as you know your desire to be moderate. Once you can trust your desire to be moderate, you don't have to regulate consumption. The only control that's empowering is creative and artistic control. Control for the sake of survival is a burden, a chore. we can only control things we understand. and by increasing our understanding, little by little, we are empowering ourselves. so it's not fear mongering and please don't call it that. I welcome real understanding. This garbage is not understanding, it is abuse. Edited November 15, 2010 by goldisheavy

Listener Posted November 16, 2010 Most of these types of articles ignore the real issue with regard to food and health, GMO and added chemicals.
dragonfire Posted November 19, 2010 This article has too many areas with problems. It does not identify what type of orange juice in what state is served. 1. Orange Juice that is processed w/added fructose 2. Organic Non-processed, Fresh squeezed, not-altered. 3. Fresh oranges, you peel Most likely this research is based on orange juice off of the shelf which is full of fructose. Companies try to make as much orange juice as possible by adding fructose. For example, they can take 1 orange and squeeze all the juice out. Normally when you do this, you only get 1 glass of juice or less. But what they do to maximize profits is to take that 1 orange and its contents and add sugar to it, plus water. So instead of getting 100% pure orange juice you only really get 5% orange juice, 95% water, and a shit load of sugar. Its not the natural orange that is bad, its always the business practises that are bad. They know they are screwing people over for profit, but they really don't care, because they all are still diluted themselves.
