Gerard Posted March 24, 2011 RV, thanks for linking those tracks...but to me honestly it misses the raw energy of the 60s and 70s and the joy and nostalgia of the 80s. Grace Slick : There's a spirit child inside you ready for life and I know It's just waiting to see how you will grow And when the spirit feels the need to wander let it go Yes, of course I haven't forgotten master Hendrix and his "galactic" stratocaster: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bng3agUOYiI Even Dylan stated that Hendrix's version of his song was better. More 70s, and this time Triana, flamenco rock fusion from Spain: There is some stuff made in recent times which is played with the spirit )aside from some of the stuff linked in this thread); for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI6XDlZ8YvM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyWayJnLYLc Israel Kamakawiwoʻole's version of the popular song written for the great movie The Wizard of Oz. Aloha! We can go back to Europe...I don't want to upload a heap of stuff but back in the 60s Italy and France produced excellent singers. More examples: Mina - Un anno d'amore Mina - Il cielo in una stanza http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjJWEf-ZoPg&feature=related Patty Pravo - Se perdo te http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAJj4dZjIYY Gigliola Cinquetti - Non Ho L'eta. Notice how people loved to smile and had clearer eyes in the video...The spirit was visible!
ralis Posted March 24, 2011 (edited) Woke up this morning and wondered why so many great musicians die so young. Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Stevie Ray and Gary Moore. There are no words to describe the feeling in this piece! Edited March 24, 2011 by ralis

ralis Posted March 25, 2011 (edited) All this music would not be here without Bach, it seems. Erbarme Dich by bach, means Have Mercy in german. This is real music Are you talking about all music? If so, that is a very narrow point of view and gives no credit to the blues heritage that has made a huge impact on music in the West and by extension, many places on this planet. The roots of which go back to Africa. I guess in your mind blues and all that came from it is not real as opposed to what you posted here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_the_blues Edited March 25, 2011 by ralis
zerostao Posted March 26, 2011 so much hendrix i do like his version of It's a Wonderful World. i agree with R_V that today's music is rich, and some of the music she has shared hear with us , i have been listening to quite a bit. this thread started off with a song that i would label as 80's music(pop) then as now i was just a little kid, so , idk much about it but if i were to pick one song from 80's pop music it would be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBytH7ljp3c or was it in the 80's when i discovered stevie ray vaugn and steve vai.... The Call, The Cult,... doesnt matter coz music dances to its own tune. music probably cares less if it dances alone or if we notice. if we do notice and listen with sincerity then our heart and soul gets a little medicine. but being southern in a southern sort of way, (i did venture all the way north to cincinnatti a couple of times.) it was just easier to stay barefoot in 'bama, or florida. 80's music for me was probably hank jr. where is the emoticon with the cowboy hat? hat, shades, beard and all. but to me all music is blues ,unless of course it is jazz. when in Rome(georgia) the saying goes. ralis Posted March 28, 2011 (edited) David Gilmour's music is far from empty. The raw power is still there! I just love the screaming guitar! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajAZiYP36P8 Edited March 28, 2011 by ralis

doc benway Posted April 8, 2011 (edited) I love new music. There is plenty out there that is full of heart and soul for me. It's just a matter of looking and being open to new things. Of course we are all conditioned to music (usually due to nostalgic associations) but I love falling in love with new music. A few samples of music from the last few years that I enjoy: From Brazil - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LegbmEX-_Z8 From Mali - Oumou Sangare and Ali Farka Toure are as passionate and soulful as any musicians who have lived, IMO... From Cuba - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRmpUtIX7Yo From the USA - This last one was written about 12 years ago but is soon to be re-released and I just saw them perform it live a few weeks ago - took me back to my teens (not that I was in my teens 12 years ago...). Great stuff! Edited April 8, 2011 by steve f

joeblast Posted April 10, 2011 I think perhaps the biggest reason I was so madly in love with the girlfriend I had like ten years ago was her voice was so absolutely beautiful it made me swoon, she'd just sit around the house and sing (and unfortunately not much else )...this girl here has a truly beautiful voice Nice! I saw Australian Pink Floyd not too long ago, and ya know what? I'd rather see them over the real Pink Floyd any day of the week, they did *that* good of a job. I'm a fan of les pauls too...my buddy just picked up a Studio that has the 50s neck on it, I enjoy the more traditional "this is the correct hand position" as opposed to some of the super-thin necks out these days that allow you to cheat on your form I wish I could have been in Berlin to see this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJvyjigCnD0&feature=related There's a lot of the magic of the 70s that isnt much duplicated these days - the technical focus of a bunch of the bands back then...Ahhh! Love it. I like the big band sound. Keyboards, horns, percussion My first snare drum was all sparkly, this reminds me of drumming under the stairs on it in my parent's old house Love the Ric, fantastic bass... Now that I think of it...when I think 80s, I think...overripe 70s

I saw most of the great bands back in the 70's. King Crimson, Edgar Winter, Jefferson Starship, Moody Blues, J. Giles, Humble Pie, Santana etc. Robert Fripp was playing a beautiful ebony Les Paul in the King Crimson show. That particular model is around 4000.00 now. That is my dream guitar. I own a single cut PRS which is a great guitar. However, it is not a Les Paul!

Put a pair of the 57/08 or 57/09 pickups on the PRS - pretty close to a Les Paul, just a lot lighter and better quality control! That said - nothing sounds quite like a Les Paul, especially in the hands of Robert Fripp. Saw King Crimson live in '74 and '81 = two of my favorite shows of all time. Gerard Posted April 11, 2011 Very nice. She reminds me of Loreena McKennitt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iijklrtljnw Nice! I saw Australian Pink Floyd not too long ago, and ya know what? joeblast Posted April 11, 2011 You obviously have never seen the real Pink Floyd live: I'm sure the multitude of their live recordings dont quite count But, what I liked so much about aussie floyd was...NO poetic license whatsoever. It was all verbatim to the album...something I've heard Floyd butch quite a few times licensing whatever they feel at the moment on stage

Gerard Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) There is another thread opened about enlighetened music where numerous classical pieces are linked. I opened this one thinking more of popular, folk and rock music with soul.
