RiverSnake Posted August 18, 2011 (edited) Where do you get your information from on worldly events? I have not watched the news or tv in general for a long time and don't order any kind of printed press simply because i see most official forms of media are in the pocket of organizations and politicians. Yet i would like to be more informed about the politics of our era. I think a lot is at stake in the next election and i would like to be more aware of whats going on in our nation and abroad. I know there are many astute individuals on the tao bums and probably a lot of old 70s hippster dudes on this site whom are quite politically aware. Your input on reliable sources would be much appreciated. Edited August 18, 2011 by OldGreen
Jetsun Posted August 18, 2011 Al Jazeera isn't too bad, it seems to be disliked by almost every government in the west and middle east so it must be doing something right... unless you want reliable news about Qatar that is.

I know there are many astute individuals on the tao bums and probably a lot of old 70s hippster dudes on this site whom are quite politically aware. Your input on reliable sources would be much appreciated. There was a time when I was concerned about world and local news. After realizing the depth of corruption of information (both intentional and resulting from unintentional forms of bias) I began routinely looking at multiple sources when reading an interesting story. I routinely looked at BBC, NPR, NY Times, Al Jazeerah, DEBKA-File, and occasionally others in Europe and Asia. Ultimately I realized that there is no such thing as a reliable or unbiased news story. It all depends on the unique confluence of information, geography, culture, and politics. I've completely let go of following news for about 3 years now. Some gets to me from other people and occasionally I'll read a paper or listen or look at media but very rarely. My life is better for me without it. I spend more time on things that are meaningful to me and I rarely find that there is anything important I miss that would have an affect on my life.

Wynn Posted August 18, 2011 "Spirituality" on one hand, "the world" on another. It is an intensely curious paradox. In my gut I know this little world of ours is an illusion, and I would be wise to abandon all fears and desires; bu bu but ... that surrendering everything seems almost impossible. It also seems the simplest thing imaginable. I'm living a curious existence, in one breath I'm residing in the Tao, in the next I'm looking at the Dow. Primarily a financial blog, but also current events, politics and alternative media. www.zerohedge.com By the way - it looks like economies and governments are on the brink of collapse. Buckle up. Or better yet, surrender.

"You may not agree with it, but you feel like you're getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news which, you know, is not particularly informative to us, let alone foreigners." And so is now asking taxpayers for $7 billion to step up state-sponsored American propaganda to counteract REAL news! Um, I got a better idea - why don't they just air the REAL NEWS in our country from global media like Al Jazeera and save us all $7 billion that we don't have!!!?? DUH!! RiverSnake Posted August 19, 2011 Been listening to Infowars the last couple days and the perspectives presented seems pretty interesting. Alex Jones talks about Globalists and there infiltration of the government and how their trying to turn the U.S. into a police state. He's also a big Ron Paul advocate. Anyone ever listen to his stuff?
3L3VAT3 Posted August 19, 2011 Well... there's always NPR, if your into that... ...or the Daily Show... seriously though, you get more scoops from there than the "real news"!

Um, I got a better idea - why don't they just air the REAL NEWS in our country from global media like Al Jazeera and save us all $7 billion that we don't have!!!?? DUH!! Ha, yeah the problem with any state sponsored news it will always be influenced from above no matter how free they try to make it. For example here the BBC is generally pretty good and there are a number of laws trying to safeguard it's impartiallity but it's still controlled from above, for example with the riots last week the first few days I watched some of them live but on the last day there was an amost total media blackout and the only live footage being shown was on a Sikh tv channel called Sangat tv. Al Jazeera may have it's own agendas on some issues, I know at one point the US authorities thought they had terrorist connections and put someone associated with it in guantanamo bay, but I dont buy that because the tyrant leaders in the Middle East hate it more than anyone else because it reports on how corrupt they are, Gadaffi even specifically targets their journalists and tries to kill them above all others. So I see no evidence of any particular pro Muslim anti Western slant which some people have accused them of.
everseeking Posted August 20, 2011 I go to infowars!! At first I kinda thought Alex Jones was just using scare tactics, but I am starting to really like the things they report on. I am totally 10000% behind Ron Paul.
Mal Posted August 20, 2011 "Some gets to me from other people" That's pretty much it for me too. Mostly only bad stuff gets talked about in general conversations but people talk about what's of interest to them, so by listening I don't feel "out of the lop" with regards to news. I enjoy listening to football on the radio, it's ABC (national government broadcaster like the BBC) but IMHO they have a very good balanced news service, so global info that people don't talk about gets to me that way. I also likeTriplej's Hack Never got into newspapers. On commercial TV news seems more like gossip and entertainment via people suffering (i.e. I wonder how that cat lady is living, hopefully others have forgotten her name like me) Rather watch TED than the TV news (or torrents of TV shows for the entertainment I want when I want it) I guess the intent with news was to keep your community informed. Anything I want to know more about I toss into a search engine.
DalTheJigsaw123 Posted August 20, 2011 I usually read Huffingtonpost.com and DrudgeReport.com and News.Google.com. There are other alternative resources, however, I am working on cutting down all of this stuff. Maybe viewing news once a week. I noticed that I have become more angry and more addicted to this kind of stuff, which doesn't help me in my life.
