I have no idea... I think it is related to blood somehow. Perhaps people will fight over the meaning of these symbols and shed blood over them. It looks like it would take quite a lot to fill those troughs. I don't know enough about blood sacrifice but even an animal wouldn't be able to stay standing in that place (they'd fall into the troughs). Yes, possible hole into which a vertical structure went.
