This area is the backdrop for the famous Poussin painting 'The Shepherds of Arcadia'. The mountains are extremely mysterious and some have suggested they are artificial in origin. The ancient Phoenicians referred to giants as the creators of the Pyrenees mountains. Chang Posted May 2, 2012 It is certainly a very interesting, beautiful and atmospheric part of the world which readily lends itself to tales of mystery and imagination. Â My own view is that the rock formations are natural and the tales associated with the area should be taken with a generous pinch of salt.
