Dzogchen book recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good book on Dzogchen? Looking for something comprehensive.

Can anyone recommend a good book on Dzogchen? Looking for something comprehensive.

Comprehensive can mean a lot of things.

 

Comprehensive explanations of "how it all works"? Would you want the translations of the writings of ancient masters, or teachings from modern Lamas geared toward Westerners?

Comprehensive coverage of the history and/or philosophy of Dzogchen?

Comprehensive on the Buddhist path, culminating in Dzogchen?

There seem to be books with all of these focuses. But if you want comprehensive instructions on practical techniques, there isn't a lot out there.

Transmission is the main thing, books are secondary. There's these though:

Tony Duff has done a few translations of Dzogchen instruction texts but he and the sellers stress the importance of transmission before reading.

Okay to clarify, I'm not so much interested in the history, I'm looking for practical instruction and explanation of the path and how to walk it.

and Being Right Here: a Nuden Dorje commentary by James Low - its a superb Intro.

 

My favourite modern author is Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. He writes to the western mind really well, but is a fusion of Dzogchen/Mahamudra which I think is a good thing, but might not be your cup of tea...

 

Also getting a transmission from the Namkhai Norbu folks is worthwhile, as they have some great private publications available and are a fun group full stop.
