Catch-and-release fishing is much like shoot-and-release hunting, I think...

I used to fish and every time the fish was brought out the water it would shit itself in what I assume is outright terror, so I don't think it is the most compassionate pursuit.

Then don't fish. I was not claiming it was a compassionate sport I was responding to her post. I think releasing the fish is more compassionate than killing it so I gave a suggestion. To each his/her own.

Please enlighten me I never heard of shoot and release hunting. If you are being cynical than they are not similar at all. The animal is shot and killed while the fish is released and lives.

Only some animals that are shot are killed and only some fish that are released live. I'd suggest asking the maimed fish about the similarities.

I was imagining something more like tranquilizer guns or knock out gas pellets that way the hunter could still get a photo of the animal as a trophy and the animal would just wake up groggy an hour later. That's what I imagined shoot and release hunting could be, that or use paint ball guns. The rainbow colored deer would be the slowest in the forests.

Eat what you eat obviously, but it takes bravery to examine 'whether' you should or not and to examine what excuse systems you live by, and whether they have much logic to them.

Its very easy to espouse philosophies saying "you have the 'Right' to eat what you want" Really? do Humans have 'rights' over animals? Did The animal, as it was being killed, feel that the Humans had a 'right' to kill it against its will?

Also question people telling you that "You don't have to feel bad about your choice to eat meat" Really? They may be right, but what is it based on?

To become an ethical society, we have to review all these assumptions in great detail.

A lot of people use very shallow justification systems for the various parts of their lifestyles, but I strongly feel that the old philosophical saying "The unexamined life is not worth living" is very valid.

I myself grew up hunting, so I have killed and eaten many animals, and I have also got to eat some Human in a rare situation, But I prefer vegetarianism in general.

[i am not saying its better, but that all the issues around it should be examined, and I strongly believe that meat eaters should have to kill their food, at least once...]

I might add that the eating vegetables = killing, is a stupid and un thought through argument, used by meat eaters who don't wish to seriously examine their eating habits.

Flippancy around issues of life and death is of poor character.

Vegetables, Fruit and so on, spread best by being eaten, so that their seeds get defecated out somewhere and get to use that warm poo to help kick start their new growth wherever they land.

They have evolved to be sweet, so that they will be attractive to most creatures, who will eat them and thus help them propagate further...

They 'want' to be eaten!
