It has recently been brought to my attention (thanks cat, and others) that there might be a Qi Gong practice that could assist with my hearing loss or even repair the damage that has been done.

My hearing loss has become a part of my life weather or not I wanted it to be, and I've been growing accustomed to the issues associated with being unable to hear fluidly and consistently in conversation only recently. I lost my (good) hearing when I was about 11 years old when I fell and hit my head and got a concussion. It's been a few short of 20 years now, I can read lips pretty well, but I don't know much sign and I have never known a practice I could implement into my personal cultivation that might assist or even repair my hearing loss.

I can hear quite well mind you, but as if someone transposed the frequencies up a few hundred thousand hertz; I cannot hear low frequency sounds such as, but not limited to, my own voice lawn mowers, bass guitar, and Dart Vader, but high frequencies are crystal clear, so much so that the sound of crystals themselves gives the phrase a whole new meaning.

I would love to be able to function more normally in conversation and social situations, however, I would miss the frequency gain if I had to sacrifice it to retrieve the frequency loss...

Hey man, I wish I could offer better advice. The only thing I know of is listening to things at low volumes to try to build up the sensitivity. I heard this advice from a hearing specialist for a young child and employ it myself to preserve my hearing which I've been told a number of times is exceptionally good.

Anyway, worth a try. It might just tune the brain to those frequencies at the very least. The trick is putting things at a level where you have to strain just a bit to hear them well enough. This way the hearing faculties are naturally engaged more than with more passive listening.

Also yawning can be good for the ears as it stretches the inner ears.

I've read convincing nutritional research to suggest that eating lots of pumpkin and sunflower seeds grows hair. I eat lots of them for protein (being mostly vegetarian) and people are amazed at how fast my hair grows. Perhaps this could help with the hair folicles in the ears as well? I dunno.

I actually wouldn't be too astonished if medical qi gong could make some amount of difference if it's not hair follicle related.

You could try brainwave entrainment sessions made with software such as the NeuroProgrammer from Transparent. Such software will allow you to modulate tones above or below your range, challenging new dendritic growth. Such sessions also increase blood flow to the brain. The brain is very plastic, and can be coaxed into regaining function, if the damage is not too great.

Not come across one yet but if anyone knows of something I'll give it a go as I have age related directional deafness that is gradually getting worse.

you may leave :D

I have noticed taht the periods (be they hours, days, weeks, or months) of inactivity in my life, my hearing is as-usual, but when i am active and practicing something physically engaging every day, i noticed that i have less trouble following other people's speech.

Now, my original theory was that i was becoming subtly psychic; that i was predicting what people were saying in mere moments before they spoke... it was the only thing that madesense to me last year :P LOL

Qi Gong makes more sense this year i guess! haw!

Treatment of sensory neural hearing loss by qigong Author: Anonymous Conference/Journal: 1st World Conf Acad Exch Med Qigong Date published: 1988 SAVE AS: WORD DOC | TEXT FORMAT | PRINT ISBN: ISSN: Volume ID: Issue ID: Pages: 91 Special Notes: Word count: 1336

42 cases (76 ears) were treated by the qigong therapy in our hospital from 1985-1986. They had been treated by Western medicine or traditional Chinese medicine with failure. Among them 34 cases were bilateral deafness, 8 were unilateral deafness. 30 cases were men, 12 were women. The average age was 43.5 years old (from 20-70) and the average course of deafness was 7.2 years (from 3 months—15 years).

Pattern: Wudang qigong was practised. It included three parts the quiescent, dynamic , accessory qigong exercises. The first one consisted of two forms the Wuji form and Taiji form; the second consisted of twelve movements; the third consisted of five movements. The patients did the exercises collectively for one hour from 6-7 o'clock in the morning. The practice lasted for 2 months and in this period no medication was given to improve hearing.

Criteria of effect: We used the average value of the air conduction of the speech frequency (500, 1000, 2000 Hz) as the criterion of hearing. For elusion of errors we adopted the same audiometry (DZ-IB type electric audiometer), technician, time (8-9 A.M.) and method of examination. Examination was done before and after the course of treatment. For those who decided to do the exercise for 3 months, another audiometry was conducted in the middle when the term ended. At least 10dB hearing increase was considered effective.

Therapeutic effect: Among 76 ears effectiveness was found in 18 ears (the effective rate was 23.7%), among which, the hearing of 6 ears increased more than 15dB (7.9%) . Among the 42 patients, 28 (54 ears) had tinnitus, which decreased subjectively in different degrees to 29 ears (53.7%).

Types of deafness and therapeutic effect: There are six types of deafness Sudden deafness, drug toxic deafness, senile deafness, noise deafness, deafness due to multiple causes and others. The last one includes hereditary deafness (2 cases, 4 ears), deafness after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (I case, 2 ears), deafness after brain concussion (1 case, 2 ears) . According to the treatment qigong therapy was ineffective to the hereditary deafness, poor effect to the drug toxic deafness and noise deafness, but it had better effect on the senile deafness, 2 cases of which (4 ears) after doing qigong exercises for one and a half month, had a decrease of speech frequency of air conduction for 7-10dB in the first one and a half months for qigong practice, but in another one and a half months, the hearing didn't continue to decrease. We assume that the qigong therapy may prevent the development of senile deafness.

Types of deafness and therapeutic effect

. Hearing Increased Hearing Increased

Type of Deafness Cases Ears at least 10dB

sudden deafness 12 18 4 22.2

drug toxic deafnesss 11 21 4 14.3

senile deafness 9 18 6 33.3

noise deafness 3 6 1 16.7

multiples cause 3 5 1 20.0

others 4 8 2 25.0

total 42 76 18 23.7

Duration of the qigong exercise and the therapeutic effect

The duration of the qigong exercise varies from one month (13 cases) to 2 months (9 cases) and 3 months (20 cases) . The therapeutic effect was nearly the same for different duration. We don't know if prolonged practice can increase hearing.

Among the 20 cases (38 ears) which did the qigong exercise for 3 months, the average value of the speech frequency of air conduction increased less than 5 dB in 5 ears (13.2%), but at the low frequency (25 Hz), the hearing increased 10-15dB (13dB on an average), at the high frequency (4000 Hz), the hearing increase over 5dB was never seen (hearing decrease 1 dB on an average) . The increase of hearing at low frequency was an accidental phenomenon. The cause remains to be explored. No side-effect was found in the exercise.

The hormone aldosterone is also effective in age related hearing loss, at least if aldosterone levels are low.

Aldosterone is expensive.

Norm Shealey has an acupoint protocol (he uses a tens type unit) which he claims increases aldosterone.

Interesting experiment....

3.7 Ear Exercise (Er Gong)

Functions: Prevents and treats ear trouble, dredges the channels, and

improves hearing.

Methods

1. Preparation. Sit or stand in a relaxed manner . Use Inwardhearing

and close the mouth and eyes . Breathe naturally and

get rid of distracting thoughts .

2. Striking the Heavenly Drum (Ming Tian Gu) . Using the

palms of the hands, press the ears with the point Laogong (P 8)

(located on the palms) aimed at the ear orifices . Resting the

fingers on the back of the head . Cross the index fingers above

the middle fingers and snap them to tap the back of the head

lightly 24 times . You can hear drumming sound when doing

this.

3. Pressing the Ears to Guide Qi . Press the ear orifices tightly

with the palms so as to compress the inner ears and release

them 10 times. Be sure to avoid forceful and violent pressing

or releasing. Though the pressing should be tight and the

release rapid, it must be done gently and moderately.

4. Massaging the Auricles . Pinch the top of the auricles (external

portion of the ear) of the ear gently with the thumbs and

the index fingers and massage from the top downwards at least

24 times until they are warm.

I've found that my hearing does, in fact, seem more acute while I am active, comparably to day/week/time periods that I am lazy...

this could maybe be tied to engaging the hearing faculties more, as is the point to listening things at just or barely audible levels. I think there is a lot to hearing that goes on outside of the ears, such as subconsciously minimizing other faculties to give attention or energy to the hearing faculties. Generally a multi-angled approach is the best strategy for success.

Came across this today. Seems listening to music with the frequency(s) of your tinnitus removed from them will help. After you determine what that frequency range is, this can be done rather easily with sound filters.

Something most people are not aware of is that hearing loss directly and very quickly effects IQ (many cognitive functions).

It is very important to obtain hearing aids much sooner than later or those areas no longer stimulated by those frequencies will degrade quickly over a year and less.

I'm not sure if I lost some of my hearing to Led Zeplin ( it is illegal to play it less than loudly) or diving or what but grab some hearing aids from Costco if you are even thinking that you need them. Hearing tests are free in Costco (USA big box store).

Sorry to necro, I remember reading a book called Superlearning 2000 once (outstanding book), they had an entire chapter on sound therapy and mentioned the opera singer Caruso (spelling) who had gone deaf, but using this special ear device which had a combination of high pitched shrieks and whistles, they restored his hearing completely.

I'd love to find a solution to my tinnitus.  I get the feeling the cause was long long hours of highway driving with music turned up too loud.  Lately I get spammed by lipoflavoroids ads, but don't think they're the solution.

Michael,

I would try homeopathy with an experienced practitioner if I were you. It heals all kinds of things that conventional medicine can't deal with well. IME.

Be free to PM me if you want to learn more.

Cheers
