Why does tickling induce laughter?

Recommended Posts

Does TCM or other alternative disciplines have an explanation for why people can be tickled into a fit of laughter?

Also, I've read on Wikipedia that tickling was used as torture, and the victim would eventually cry streams of tears, allegedly in pain.

This is so intriguing, but mainstream medicine has no explanations it seems.

Could the result of tickle torture be actually an emotional healing crisis? I mean, something that when it increases in intensity FIRST uinduces laughter and only later pain and crying, that sounds to me like something that more spiritual disciplines might be able to explain.

OK, so now they know even more detail, but does that help in getting the big picture? The article is not clear about that, so I guess they don't want to speak it out loudly that it's not. They don't even say what the conventional medical use of that new information will or can be. They celebrate it for the sake of it. All the interesting questions are missing from the article.

Thanks for posting though. Maybe we can eventually corner the answer and beat it up. :D

i once thought of using tickle torture as a mind over matter exercise. never got around to it though... Perhaps try that and get a personal idea of it yourself? :)
