ChiForce Posted March 12, 2013 What is the form realm? I know that all three realms are part of the cycles of birth and rebirth (Samara). Does it mean that we are all started or initially born ( in this life) in the realm of desires? Through meditations and merits accumulated, we can be reborn in the form realm? Then, being reborn in the formless realm? In the same life time too? Are these realms the result of various state of Samadhi too?
Seeker of Wisdom Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) Apparently the form realm is accessible to someone who's mastered the first jhana, and the formless realm to those who've mastered any of the 4 formless jhanas. See these 11 articles on samadhi: http://www.meditationexpert.com/zen-buddhism-tao/index.htm Really great info. Mandrake Posted March 14, 2013 Chiforce: What is the form realm? I know that all three realms are part of the cycles of birth and rebirth (Samara). Does it mean that we are all started or initially born ( in this life) in the realm of desires? Through meditations and merits accumulated, we can be reborn in the form realm? Then, being reborn in the formless realm? In the same life time too? Are these realms the result of various state of Samadhi too? From my limited knowledge: The elements and the fabric of consciousness building up everything and sentient beings have been going on infinitely, thus nobody starts in the desire realm - there's no start to begin with since there is no nuclear something. Depending on your samadhi and merit, yes, you can be born there. It is not necessarily better. In some heavens you are just absorbed in formless light for a ridiculous amount of time, then the dynamic changes and you project in a different world. An aversion to existence could probably lead one to spend a time in such a heaven - though, what can you accomplish there? Concerning the Form realm: Best is if you read suttas, sutras, and scriptures of sages in the Indian traditions, and speak with people that you have some confidence in their attainments and you yourself form an understanding. Ultimately, we totally lack a vocabulary that could convey these realms (try describing new colours to people that only ever saw black and white). Seeker of Wisdom Posted March 14, 2013 Wherever you are born, it's your mind that ultimately determines how good a time you have (barring actual problems like malaria and starvation of course). Therefore, cultivate and treat other realms as insignificant curiosities.
XieJia Posted March 15, 2013 All three are ever present to any sentinient beings at the moment. For each current states, there are forms and its corresponding names. Forms consists of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, tactiles and mental form. Names is what intrepret these form, which includes vedana, memories, mental formation and consciousness. Many traditions would encourage those who begins on the path to contemplate form first, through penetration and understanding the nature of forms, it is much easier to contemplate the formless. the experience is the form and the formless is experiencing. from scriptures, one only needs to develop a degree of samadhi to be born in the formless brahma realm. The Tagatha encourages us to penetrates the nature of desire, form and formless. Peace and Wisdom on your quest, xj
