OAKLAND, Calif. —

A massive law enforcement sweep was underway in Oakland Wednesday, with nine people having reportedly been detained an hour after it was first reported.

FBI agents, local police SWAT and the California Highway Patrol were targeting multiple locations.

Several streets were closed down in West Oakland during the sweeps. Portions of Seventh and Eighth streets were shut down in the area for at least 90 minutes and while helicopters circled overhead.

The police barricades were reportedly lifted just before 10:20 p.m.

It appeared to be an extensive operation with many officers involved.

There were agents carrying out actions in numerous parts of the city Wednesday night.

As of 9 p.m., KTVU learned that nine people had been detained.

An hour later, a separate sweep involving San Leandro Police reportedly resulted in a standoff near the intersection of E. 22 Street and 14th Avenue.

Oakland Police and other agencies involved told KTVU that the participating departments were not at liberty to discuss what the action concerned.

However, those agencies would be able to release details when the sweep was over.

Those in Oakland defending police actions as only targeting members of low income communities should be reminded of a quote by anti-Nazi theologian Martin Niemöller:

First they came for the communists,

and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,

and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,

and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for me,

and there was no one left to speak for me.

Trade unions in the Soviet Union trace their history back to Russian Revolution of 1905. Many trade unions were shut down or restricted on the eve of World War I and during the War, but they revived after the February Revolution and their leaders were democratically elected during 1917.

Anarchists and some Bolshevik trade unionists hoped that unions would manage industry after the October Revolution. A strong factory committee movement had sprung up, from workers occupying workplaces or forcing their bosses into compliance with demands as the government would no longer protect them. However, as the Bolsheviks seized and consolidated power, this movement was ended by nationalizing industry.

The victory of the Russian Revolution and the creation of the Communist International in 1919 showed the workers of Australia the real path of progress. In 1920 the Communist Party of Australia was formed with strong trade union connections. Now at last it became possible to unite firmly the economic movement of the trade unions with political action, aimed at the ultimate realisation of socialism, in accordance with the directives of Marx contained in the Resolution of the 1871 Conference of the First International.

Growth Of Trade Unionism In Australia

Introduction by E.W. Campbell

Associations of workmen of one type or another can be traced far back into history, but trade unions as we know them today date back only to the 18th century

Britain was the first country to become capitalist, and it was there that trade unions first appeared. The Industrial Revolution, which took place in the last half of the 18th century, gave impetus to the growth of trade unionism. British workers in one trade after another began to form permanent combinations and to wage strikes to protect and improve their conditions of employment. Later, as capitalism developed in Europe and America, workers there formed organisations similar in character to the British trade unions. It was in this epoch, when trade unions had just been formed, that Karl Marx lived and worked. Marx attached considerable importance to the role and functions of the trade unions. He realised that they represented the first steps in the organisations of the workers as a class. An outline of Marx’s views on this subject is found in the resolution on the past, present and future of trade unions, adopted at the Geneva Congress of the First International in 1866.

Concerning the origin of trade unions, Marx points out how capital is concentrated social power, while the worker has only his individual labour power at his disposal. Therefore, the agreement between Capital and Labour can never be just. The only social force possessed by the workers is their numerical strength. This force, however, is impaired by the absence of unity. The lack of unity among the workers is caused by the inevitable competition among themselves, and is maintained by it. The trade unions developed originally out of the spontaneous attempts of the workers to do away with this competition, or at least to restrict it, for the purpose of obtaining at least such contractual conditions as would raise them above the status of virtual slaves. The immediate aim of the trade unions, therefore, was limited to waging the day-to-day struggle against Capital, as a means of defence against continuous abuses by the latter, i.e., questions concerning wages and working hours.

Marx goes on to state that this activity of the trade unions is not only justified but also necessary. It cannot be dispensed with so long as the capitalist mode of production exists. On the contrary, it must become general by means of creating and uniting trade unions in all countries. This refutes the arguments of the present day ultra-Lefts who indulge in academic criticism of the struggle for immediate demands. If the trade unions refrained from such struggle there would be no limit to the exploitation of the workers other than that of physical endurance. The workers would be reduced to the status of slaves.

Communism (from Latin communis - common, universal) is a revolutionary socialist movement to create a classless, moneyless[1][2] and stateless social order structured upon common ownership of the means of production, as well as a social, political and economic ideology that aims at the establishment of this social order.[3] This movement, in its Marxist–Leninist interpretations, significantly influenced the history of the 20th century, which saw intense rivalry between the "socialist world" (socialist states ruled by communist parties) and the "western world" (countries with capitalist economies).[4]

Modern socialism originated from an 18th-century intellectual and working class political movement that criticised the effects of industrialisation and private property on society. In the early 19th-century, "socialism" referred to any concern for the social problems of capitalism irrespective of the solutions to those problems. However, by the late 19th-century, "socialism" had come to signify opposition to capitalism and advocacy for an alternative system based on some form of social ownership.[8]Marxists expanded further on this, attributing scientific assessment and democratic planning as critical elements of socialism.[9]

Nice bit of googling. You can be a trade unionist by simply working in a particular industry and joining ... you might be a conservative, a liberal, an anarcho-sindicalist ... etc. etc. so the term is broad. You can be a socialist without being a communist, so the first term is broader than the second. so in the original quote it means first a smaller group is targeted, then a bigger one and so on ... until no collective voice is left to defend the individual. The idea that they may be kind of the same thing is the sort of thinking used by the oppressors to justify an attack on the broader group.

so they're gonna cut down the numbers of Free people and expose our divisions.

A people divided is falling. goodbye divisors, joeblast and ralis. as if you two were our own unique case in point here in our community. If there is truth in that report at any measure, then our communications will surely soon be rescinded. we're not yet united enough to protect and defend our Free Will.

Thanks :)

I am not talking about the people who follow... every man and his dog and what he personally believes/ or doesnt when signing up. When I was younger and signing up for union stuff I was told that it would help me out etc... sounded good to me, didn't know much else. When was the last time you had a discussion about anarcho-sindicalism on your lunch break? haha

I am talking about the ideas / the philosophy behind these 3 things...

Ah well.

sidenote: Its a link to a 300+ page PDF thesis regarding topic... for anyone interested haha

Alex Jones and infowars might not be the best place to find information. If you forget about the date and listen to his early rants circa 1996 or 97, you'd hear the world is clearly coming to an end. If you could read infowars in the the year 1999, you'd clearly see Armageddon Soon. Every President (& pope) an anti-christ. Every year, doom, war, economic collapse. Every month predictions of the police or slave state since 1997.

If you really believed him, you'd be a basket case, constantly waiting..expecting..the black helicopters and storm troopers to beat down your door.

These are typical topics that he recycles monthly:

Alex Jones | The globalists are obsessed with eugenics.

Infowars.com | This is a dire warning for every man, woman and child, not just in the U.S.,

How many times can you buy into it? Month after month, year after year? I understand how new listeners can be seduced, but after reading the same thing every year, wouldn't one get the feeling he's wrong? Or do you continually think.. the end is soon, but not yet, soon but not just now, soon soon soon. He's not even as fun as the cubs game.

i think popular conspiracy theorists detract from the real issues that are publicly known to be true. Plenty of horrible shit in the world to deal with, no sense in putting all our thought energy into lizard people. i don't care if the government is comprised of lizard people, i care that they fuck everyone and everything over and that is common knowledge.
