The sample size you are proposing is small to the point of being meaningless. That's unless you think the active population of The Tao Bums is only a couple dozen members. If that is the case, it throws a lot other assumptions off. Either way, we're happy to look at this until we have a good solution. :)

The majority of postings in one week is done by a small handful of members.

All other members are either lurkers or inactive.

I fear more will become lurkers and inactive as this place of information sharing becomes more lifeless and stale.

Both the changes themselves and the draconian way in which they have been imposed constitute a gross breach of trust and confidence and are a fundamental betrayal of the founding "principles" of TTB.

All but the last handful of my nearly 1400 posts were made on the understanding that I had the right to edit and to post as I saw fit ( i.e. without separate posts being bastardised into something other than I had actually written).

Even if the changes are rolled back, I think that you'll find that it's too late for many of us.

Trust is a one-way street - once it's gone, it's gone for good.

Gonna get me a timer with sand so i can watch my posts become immortal.

Will also be useful for Boiling Eggs ;)

Gatito : I've always understood "trust" to be a two way street ? But (I think) I know what you mean.

it was a serious question. As a newer member i don't know what these founding principles are, could you elaborate? But yes, i find your post a little intense and it makes me laugh. No offense meant

haha....i don't think we shouldn't have principles. i agree with people here saying they want old editing privileges back, but i see them as just that, PRIVILEGES. It isn't "the right thing to do", it is just what people want. All this "accordance with tao" stuff cracks me up

It's easier to push your view on other people if you can tie it to a bigger cause, especially one that is central to the community. It's a pretty commonly employed technique.

Nearly 2,400 years ago, Aristotle wrote one of the defining works of political philosophy in a book entitled Politics.

It's still incredibly relevant today, particularly what he writes about tyranny.

The ancient Greeks used the word 'turannos', which referred to an illegitimate ruler who governs without regard for the law or interests of the people, often through violent and coercive means.

Aristotle attacks tyrants mercilessly in his book, and clearly spells out the criteria which make a leader tyrannical. You may recognize a few of them:

1) Artistotle suggests that a tyrant rises to power by first demonstrating that he is a man of the people:

"He ought to show himself to his subjects in the light, not of a tyrant, but of a steward and a king."

and

"He should be moderate, not extravagant in his way of life; he should win the notables by companionship, and the multitude by flattery. "

2) But once in power, a tyrant uses all available means to hold on to power, including spying on his people:

"A tyrant should also endeavor to know what each of his subjects says or does, and should employ spies . . . and . . . eavesdroppers . . . [T]he fear of informers prevents people from speaking their minds, and if they do, they are more easily found out."

3) Furthermore, Aristotle tells us that a tyrant thrives by creating division and conflict-- "to sow quarrels among the citizens; friends should be embroiled with friends, the people with the notables [the rich]. . ."

4) Controlling the economy and stealing the citizens' wealth is also another mark of a tyrant:

"Another practice of tyrants is to multiply taxes. . . [and] impoverish his subjects; he thus provides against the maintenance of a guard by the citizen and the people, having to keep hard at work, are prevented from conspiring."

5) And as Aristotle points out, a tyrant also attempts to disarm the people such that "his subjects shall be incapable of action" because "they will not attempt to overthrow a tyranny, if they are powerless."

6) Naturally, a tyrant "is also fond of making war in order that his subjects may have something to do and be always in want of a leader."

7) Aristotle also tells us that tyrants hunt down those who oppose their power:

"It is characteristic of a tyrant to dislike everyone who has dignity or independence; he wants to be alone in his glory, but anyone who claims a like dignity or asserts his independence encroaches upon his perogative, and is hated by him as an enemy to his power."

8) Ultimately, though, Aristotle concludes that "No freeman, if he can escape from [tyranny], will endure such a government."

Some weeping and gnashing of teeth going on in this thread.

Can I just perhaps suggest that the edit timer has nothing to do with a) Adolf Hitler and rise of National Socialism in 1930's Germany or, b ) Aristotle's tyrant.

Also: while TBs does have an unwritten philosophy it does not have a written constitution and so does not have 'founding principles' as such. The unwritten philosophy is that this is a place for cultivators (and those interested) to gather and chat with each other in a relaxed and (because of the no insult rule), civil way. That we are all (including the moderators and stewards) equal in this respect - that we are allowed (in fact encouraged) to have our own views, express them, and argue for them. So as long as it doesn't get nasty and personal then nothing about how the board is set up or managed should interfere with the ability to speak or not speak, hold and view or not hold a view, post or retract anything. This must be so because there is no TBs ideology, there is no right or wrong and where there is authority it is only that born from actual realisation as a result of cultivation (in any system).

Since you now have this no edit after 30 minutes edit policy,

methinks it should be posted somewhere for all to see so new people and

those that haven't been around for a while can see their options.

Thanks Zerostao

but as I mentioned that is not the only kind of post I edit.

There are one hundred reasons I edit posts, and saying bad things impulsively is a fraction of the reason.

Lets take John Chang (not that he is my master but some people see him as the only credible source of information so..yeh)

He was leaking his light and showing off his superpowers and then he gets haunted by his old masters for this in the nightime, the next day he completely changes his mind. Imagine he was a poster on TTB that made this kind of post, the next day he would want to edit it.

A user mentioned it is being out of control, my opinion yes and no. I am out of control. No one is in control. The universe is in charge, peoples minds change. I am also in control. To say "People should always be in control" is innaccurate. My intuition and opinions change very frequently also after I make posts.

IF....the "new" Editing Policy stays in place, I believe that it would only be fair & proper to draw peoples attention to it.
