WingChunTaoBum Posted September 29, 2013 Does Donnie Yen do any other arts besides Wing Chun?
dawei Posted September 29, 2013 He considers himself a mixed martial artist... and if it were not for a shoulder injury he claims he would of joined the MMA scene...  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0947447/bio  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnie_Yen#cite_note-nytimes1-1   He is the consummate martial [action/combat] artist and I can't even pick a best movie for him as there are too many great ones...

voidisyinyang Posted September 30, 2013 (edited) Jackie sings.... Â http://www.kungfucinema.com/forums/showthread.php?s=e769f1d50e1a3efe000b7671e8f51dcb&t=15365&page=2 Â that's a good thread on Donnie Yen as possible MMA fighter.... Â Says he does jujitsu and taekawndo black belt.... Â Anyway I personally think Donnie Yen would dominate the UFC but those threaders think the opposite.... Â Crazy - but UFC followers definitely seem to think they are "king of the hill" haha. Â http://aznbadger.wordpress.com/2010/04/26/a-tribute-to-the-greatness-that-is-donnie-yen-part-i-the-early-years/ Â this blog is hilarious. devoted to donnie yen. http://aznbadger.wordpress.com/?s=donnie+yen Edited September 30, 2013 by pythagoreanfulllotus
dawei Posted September 30, 2013 I recall seeing an interview where he discussed his shoulder and I took it that the shoulder easily will dislocate given force in a certain direction. Â Maybe I am wrong but if it seems that most shoulder injuries should be able to be healed sufficient to compete... but not if one easily dislodges.
h.uriahr Posted September 30, 2013 MMA guys are King of the Hill AS A WHOLE, mind you. The GOOD traditional martial artist are good because of insane body conditioning.  The reason being-You fight how you train and train how you fight  In my Sacramento area the only full contact fighting is found in boxing, kickboxing, judo, and the mma gyms. No style of karate or Kung fu trains to get HIT. The other thing is that if you do not train to hit things then you open yourself up to injury.   It's no different than a flag footballer jumping into College or Pro Ball. yondaime109 Posted January 3, 2014 Yes, I attended taekwondo for 2 years. Not once did we ever do anything beyond light contact point sparring with pads on. To be fair, There bjj practice on Tuesdays....but still. I remember a when I was younger I would be easily impressed by a simple little tornado kick but then I began to realize that unless you've been training like a shaolin monk (To apply it to a fight) for years and years then trying that in the middle of a fight is going to get you killed. I believe 720 kicks and katas have their place in fight conditioning but only when you're actually trained to use those in a fight rather than just show off. kevin_wallbridge Posted January 4, 2014 Regarding the original question. Â Donnie Yen's mother is Bow-sim Mark, a student of Fu Zhensong's eldest son. His base is probably Shaolin and Taijiquan, as his mother is reknown for them. Â I became his die-hard fan when he stood up to Yuen Wooping when filming The Iron Monkey (1993). He said Wong Keiying was a real guy and was famous for his Hung-Gar, so he only wanted to fight choreography based on Hung-Gar.
