Like weapons?

When I was young and doing kenpo, our teacher had us choose the weapon we wanted to learn the most.

I chose tonfa. Not sure why. Maybe because it was a weapon that wasn't popular.

I don't work with many weapons these days, usually just focus on empty hand form and fighting.

Escrima/kali sticks were always my favorite. I can crank with a pair of those.

Yes, that would get the job done.

Built-in suppressor so it doesn't annoy the neighbors if you're using subsonic ammo but it handles supersonic rounds, too.

Have to get your sheriff's okey-dokey and pay for a Federal tax stamp but it's a nice little varmint gun.

This has been percolating in my mind for a few months- https://www.amazon.com/Salt-Supply-Pepper-Spray-Defense/dp/B01NBAFRQJ

A CO2 gun that shoots paint balls filled with disabling salt/teargas powder mixture that explode on impact into a cloud of pretty strong crippling dust.  Ofcourse I'd get the original gun which is $50 cheaper.  So for $300 an interesting (and imperfect but aren't they all) self defense projectile weapon.  With 3 kids potentially around, I'd wouldn't want own a real gun and accidentally make it two.

Likewise I wouldn't want to shoot someone dead in my house, though I'd prefer it to me.  I don't see robbers as mad max types, more looking for easy targets.  An advantage of the salt gun is if you let loose a 2 or 3 round most of a room is tear gassed, and hopefully smart or dumb people leave semi-blinded and gagging.  And instead cleaning up blood and dealing with courts, survivors, friends, relatives.. the thieves find egress.

From a review on Amazon CPO, may 2016

..if you are, in fact, “anti-gun” or a “non-gun person” - for whatever reason - your options are indeed limited. The SALT Gun is likely your best option for home defense - and the SALT will cover your needs in more scenarios than owning only a firearm will. Why? Because the vast majority of bumps in the night are NOT from a machete-wielding horror-movie-murderer coming in to kill you. They are drunk neighbors trying to come into the wrong house. They are angry aggressors who want to fight. They are animals knocking over the trash can. They are kids trying to break into your car. They are (often unarmed) burglars hoping nobody is home and looking to take your TV, not your life. And… They are your own teenage kids or spouse coming home unexpectedly in the middle of the night.

SALT is better suited for all of these situations than a firearm. None of these are situations that would normally require employing deadly force to resolve - even if they turn into situations where you become personally threatened. And in the small likelihood that there actually is an intruder intent on harming or killing you, SALT is capable of reversing them in their tracks. I certainly wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the SALT. The military strength combination of tear gas and pepper spray in the SALT rounds will shut down a recipient's vision and impair their breathing. You don't even have to hit them with the round for it to be effective because it's designed to deploy a cloud that hangs in the air. I don't care who you are… When you can't see, and you can't breathe, you are going to think twice about continuing your current course of action. And if you happen to hit them with the round itself -ouch! I've seen the marks left behind. If you've ever been hit with a paintball going 300fps, then you know how bad that hurts, and those are gelatinous (meaning they are designed to be as soft as possible and easily break). The SALT rounds aren't quite so friendly. They are unlikely to cause severe or long term damage, but they will get someone’s attention.

I mentioned the use of force continuum before. For those of you not familiar with that term, its primary a law enforcement thing but in a nutshell it's a concept that you should respond with the minimum amount of force necessary to resolve the situation. It's not appropriate to respond with deadly force to an aggressor that hasn’t the ability or opportunity to kill or severely harm you. It's a complicated discussion because, yes, it's possible to need to respond with deadly force even when your attacker has no weapon. Each circumstance is unique and dynamic. There is no easy button for this. If all you have is a lethal firearm, you are limited in when you can apply that force. You must wait until you are confident that your life, or someone else's, is in imminent jeopardy. What about every other situation? Sure, the firearm makes a strong deterrent, but it's not always the right tool for the job. If all you have in your toolbox is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail.

I "familiarized" with this one (M-1) but never had to qualify.

A superb weapon!

The .300 Blackout is very similar to the .308 Winchester (which in turn is very similar to the 7.62 NATO). They aren't interchangeable rounds but are similar ballistically.

Be careful with a weapon like that.  It looks like a real gun and would give just cause for an opponent to shoot to kill.

But then, if it is used only for home defense that wouldn't be a problem.

BTW  I also familiarized with the M-50 and M-60.  I'm glad I didn't have to carry one around with me.

That's a great approach for those bad guys who don't intend to do you bodily harm.  Back in the day, a shotgun loaded with rock salt was a good way to chase people off, too.

That is the potential problem, bringing a salt CO2 pistol to a gun fight.

addon> I've given some thought to getting a higher powered BB gun for such a purpose and friends pretty unanimously shot that down.  Most of my scenarios involve shouting 'Get out, I've called the police' then shooting a few salt/tear gas pellets from behind my bedroom door.

more addon> speaking of strategy from the same review this was interesting- '
If you enter my house, you will risk an introduction to one of my firearms, but I’ll also be considering every option available to me at that moment in time. My goal is to get you out of my home, not to capture you, not to hurt you, and certainly not to kill you. If I can achieve that by firing a handful of SALT rounds into the wall in the hallway between you and me to create a chemical barrier while announcing that I am armed and calling the police, then I am okay with that. If you decide to continue to advance – eyes and lungs burning – I’m even willing to put a couple of SALT rounds into your chest. My expectation is that you will realize you are making a huge mistake, and that you will reconsider your original plan. Past that, well, I’ve made the decision many years ago that I will use deadly force to protect my life or the life of another innocent person.'

Note that he writes '..firing a handful of SALT rounds into the wall between you and me to create a chemical barrier' Not a bad idea.  And who knows, someone who can fire weaponized projectiles, might well have flame thrower as back up :)

The guy who assists me with my Kenpo just introduced me to some knife techniques. Applying them in real life would be rather messy, but it's just like with condoms... Better to have them and not to need them, than to need them and not to have them.

Of course, the ultimate 'weapons' are awareness and a peaceful mind.

That works , until you are on the checkout line, at the super  and  go to flip out a $50 and  out comes a condom packet .... plop... on the counter .

And the lady picks it up and looks at it and says out loud ,   'This expired 4 years ago !

Mine is already pumped.  They won't hear a sound.

I was thinking more about TheLerner and his desire to just scare then away. The sound of a shell being chambered in a pump shotgun is quite distinctive and the bad guy doesn't know whether it's a .410 with birdshot or a 12-gauge loaded with double-ought buckshot.
