A call for a revolution

Recommended Posts

I've been watching this since it came out. I felt I should share it with all of you. I disliked Russell Brand until I watched this video. Watch this for a good laugh, and this could end up being the most important youtube video of all time. Please I ask you share this on your twitter, facebook, and or myspace account.

Meh...

A shallow and privileged hypocrite steeped in victim language and offering no viable solution. Might as well be carrying this sign:

Revolutions start with disengagement - I would not brush off the angst so lightly - he didn't miss a beat or play into the hands of the interviewer.

MPG, how can you say that? Brand argues that in this age with instantaneous communication, an idea can reach the world in a matter of a few clicks of a computer mouse. There are ways to use these things as weapons to help this cause.

There will be no revolution until the electricity goes offline, beer and food are no longer affordable. Only then will there be a revolution.

Offering no solution Brian? He is using his time to broadcast this idea of change to the mainstream, ideas that otherwise would of never been aired. You call him shallow?http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/russell-brand-makes-generous-donation-3393764 You say he is privileged? That may be but this man paid his dues, he worked for years at comedy clubs for next to nothing. You say he doesn't offer any solution? You must not have watched the video, he states he isn't trying to come up with a Utopian government in a hotel room during an interview. He is using his power, fame, and his time to point out there are people who are more qualified than him and "more importantly" more qualified than the people currently running the world. You are going to have to come up with some better arguments than that Brian. Like I said before I didn't like this man before, but he is intelligent and is using his fame and money for good reasons. Here you are attacking him for trying to help the poor and the needy?

The "revolution" started in the 60s

People all over the world are now Awakening - this has not been the case for thousands of years.

And they can talk to millions online.

Everyone can talk to everyone all the time (with a few exceptions).

I have many friends all over the world - and I know them - I see them daily if I want.

KnowHope is correct - Russel used his time wisely - and his voice has reach - deep reach.

But they can't. We were talking about this today in light of disconnect between government and people in Appalachia and further west. Everyone is supposed to be able to go on a web page and if the web page worked right proceed to figure things out People in rural counties do not have reliable high speed internet. Assumption of use of technology has gotten ahead of infrastructure. And as for all over the world, not everyone even has electricity let alone internet- or literacy. Adults over 40 or so who have worked manual labor jobs all their life are not even necessarily comfortable using computers. Not everyone uses computers or internet. I usually like your posts Spotless, but today I do not like the assumption that Everyone uses the internet. Not even sure the internet is even that helpful; we sit on the couch and talk to people all over world and barely know the people who live across the street.

Understanding your concern that there are indeed people who have yet to have access to the internet, but nearly 78% of the U.S. population has internet access (this number increasing everyday).

Regardless of the internet, Russell Brand is a Movie Star, his movies and appearances on mainstream television have farther reach. You may be right in thinking that so many who do not use a computer, will never see this. Though, most people have access to a television be it in their house, neighbor's house, or a trip to a store/library. People love television!

So this video is on the internet, tv, and radio. I think it's safe to assume that it will be heard.

But they can't. We were talking about this today in light of disconnect between government and people in Appalachia and further west. Everyone is supposed to be able to go on a web page and if the web page worked right proceed to figure things out People in rural counties do not have reliable high speed internet. There will be no revolution until the electricity goes offline, beer and food are no longer affordable. Only then will there be a revolution.

I agree with this. Someone mentioned the Egyptian Spring, prices for bread/wheat had skyrocketed there before the revolution took place. After the 2010 drought, severe belt tightening and hunger had a chance to percolate.

Ideas pop up and spread quickly, but there's so many of them, it becomes close to what Andy Warhol said, 'They each have there 15 minutes of fame.' Then they're bought out and diluted by fractional groups.

I don't look for any 'Revolution' to save anyone. What might is Integration. Good ideas, starting block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood that spread larger. A green revolution with less preaching and more growing, sharing and partying.

There is no question that Brand had a not-so-pretty childhood. Parents divorced, his mother battled cancer and his father was a louse, sexually abused by a tutor, ran away from home because he didn't like his mother's new live-in, etc. Attended Hathaway Academy and then lost his scholarship to Italia Conti Academy (kicked out, actually) at age 16.

Wait...

Kicked out of a respected performing art academy? For drug use and poor attendance? Oh, the oppression! But let's let that slide and acknowledge a less-than-idyllic childhood.

He then dropped of the radar for a few years when he was a junkie (which he blames on "the establishment"), although he did resurface in a couple of TV shows when he was 19. In 2000, he was an MTV VJ. Compassionate soul that he is, he came to work dressed as Osama bin Laden on 9/12/2001 and lost that gig. Immediately got his own TV show, though. He's already started doing stand-up and had his first nationwide tour in 2004.

So a series of short-lived TV jobs and a stand-up routine based on being a junkie, and a reputation for being what Bob Geldof called "a cunt," he started winning awards in 2006 and found his way to Hollywood. Oh, but before that, he got canned from a couple of radio shows, notably for on-air pornography and for an obscene discussion about a BBC actor's granddaughter that resulted in £150,000 fine (paid by the BBC rather than Brand).

So now he lives the life of a king, has a net worth of over $15M, pulls in more than $10k per day, married & divorced a pop-music superstar and just bought a 5 bedroom bachelor's pad in Hollywood Hills for $2.2M. In January of 2012, he ran over a pedestrian in LA of whom Brand says the man's injuries were the "direct, proximate and sole result" of his own "physical bodily condition and constitutional composition." Prince of a guy...

I just looked him up on the Internet because I can do that and truly never heard of him- til BGKA posted the video last week. Not too impressed, pretty much found what Brian posted is what I saw about him. Tv and and in many applications Internet seem like more a sedative. Bread and circuses.

So he blames our problems on the rich and powerful even though he is now rich and powerful, he claims "profit" is a dirty word but rakes in big bucks and banks them, and he has no real knowledge of political or economic systems but knows the solution is violent revolution and massive redistribution of (other people's) wealth.

It is truly good that he made a donation to the Hillsborough families, albeit to public acclaim, as that was a tragic incident. Not a recent incident, though, and recently rejuvenated as a cause celeb amongst the UK revolutionary crowd. He is known to be a football fan, though, and says he was touched by the story of on of the mothers so I'll assume his heart was in the right place on that one. Can't say that I see any other redeeming qualities in the guy, though.

First I want to point out that you have been researching for the last 3 hours, only to attack his childhood. Bravo Brian, you spent half a day trying to make Russel Brand look like a junkie. Though this is widely known already.

There is no question that Brand had a not-so-pretty childhood. Prince of a guy...

Now you describe what he has done with his career, lets see he started out poor and oppressed. He is a comedian who has his own personal views and ideas that don't match up with what the media wants to portray? I would of never seen that coming. (HEAVY SARCASM)

Oh great you researched how much he is worth, one thing you do not know. In order to maintain "star" status you must keep up appearances. No matter how famous you are, it is not possible to live in a shanty house and still be a celebrity. You are missing the point that he is using his fame and money and time to help OTHER PEOPLE! He has nothing to gain from a revolution, he already lives in luxury so why are you attacking him?

Now I will attack you.. Don't come into a conversation with fabricated stories. Russell Brand never ran into anyone, he ran into a homeless persons cart, which was full of recyclables. Brand was seen to have helped the man gather his belongings. Did you consider that maybe this man saw a nice vehicle and thought to himself "payday"? I will no longer reply to any of your commments due to the fact you can't make a valid argument so you decided to post untrue, unproven details of a story you have no idea about. Don't worry I know you wish you had those 3 hours back as well.

Just for good measure here is a fluff piece. "Ironically, the Get Him to the Greek star has become known for his charitable gestures for the homeless of late - in September (12), he treated a group of displaced locals to breakfast in Los Angeles, while he invited another male into his apartment for a bath and a home-cooked meal".

He also is behind the charity Free Tibet.

Can we now discuss the video and call for a revolution. I'm not going to waste my time talking about a celebrities past, I would rather talk about a man who is trying to help our planet, and all of it's inhabitants.

Interesting how someone needs to be "up to your standards" to have a point worth listening to.

I do my best to live a respectful, honest life, but I'd hate for someone to scour over all my life failures and mistakes and use their conclusion on that to decide if I have anything worthy to say about society.

None of us would be able to worry about this kind of stuff if we weren't ALL living in the most privileged time in history.

I grew up lower-middle class. Maybe middle class. And looking back, I have always led a very privileged life. Doesn't mean I lose the right to stand up against oppression on any level I find it at.

I would think that on a forum like this, we wouldn't be so dismissive of an idea based simply on our insignificant judgement of the character presenting it.

No more derailing, I would like to redirect to the topic of this discussion on the idea of a revolution. What do you see wrong with the government? What would you like seen done? Would you partake in a revolution? Who are the aristocrats running things? These are the types of questions I was hoping to see not to read fabricated stories from Brian and attacks on a man's past. We are talking about the future, and only a conservative aristocrat who is "privileged" would come on here and try to attack the idea of helping starving poor people.

I see Brian is typing another argument, I will not respond and I ask that no matter what he says about Russell Brand, you all just ignore it. That goes with any other post who is here not to contribute to the health of our planet, but to attack a man who has done nothing but work hard, get rich, and use his riches to help the people.

Celebrities are like our gladiators, but instead of physical torture we enjoy seeing their personal life and privacy crucified. I'm not against what he said, but it was emotional appeal and not an intellectual argument. Too much based on images and fame and sound bytes. But not really intellectual to step away from the screen and feel love for people either. Doesn't take fame or lots of money to give your lunch away or pick up some trash.

I can say it because it's absolutely 100% true.

We are a heard of ignorant monkey's.

The Romans called appeasing the masses via cheap food and entertainment, "breads and circuses" (panem et circenses). Huxley's Brave New World also seems to be inspired by this.

So long as the masses have Honey boo boo, NASCAR, RASTLIN, Duck Dynasty, America's Top Model, cheap food and beer, there will never be a revolution.

People have to be upset, and they won't get upset so long as they can distract themselves from the horrible reality that surrounds them.

We are a group of ignorant apes, you have no idea just how stupid the majority of our population really is.

Government is just a reflection of the people. You have a stupid ignorant apathetic populace, you get an absolutely and totally corrupt government as a result.

Did you watch the video? I feel you shrugged it off without giving it a real listen. I'll even bold the important parts. Direct quote from Brand,

"Remember that – yeah, totally, there’s gonna be a revolution, it’s totally going to happen. I ain’t got even a flicker of doubt. This is the end. This is time to wake up. I remember I seen you in that program where you look at your ancestors and you saw the way your grandmother would have to brass herself or had to have got fucked over by the aristocrats who ran her gaff, and you cried because you knew that it was unfair and unjust. And that was, what was that, a century ago? That’s happening to people now. I just come from a woman who’s being treated like that. I just been talking to a woman today who’s being treated like that. So if we can engage that feeling, instead of some moment of lachrymose sentimentality trotted out on the TV for people to pore over emotional porn, if we can engage that feeling and change things, why wouldn’t we? Why is that naive? Why is that not my right because I’m an actor? I mean, I, I’ve taken the right. I don’t need the right from you. I don’t need the right from anybody. I’m taking it."

Nothing will happen until people are no longer well fed and entertained.

Content people don't revolt.

I feel that I am actively working to wake people up.

Until 90% of the population is awake and aware to reality there will never be change in our society.

The revolution will happen in the minds of the population, not with guns and pitchforks.

People's paradigms and worldviews need to change, they need to be slapped awake.

No revolution is coming until that happens.

That's not true, I'm a history major and people have revolted before. Did you not see the protests in Egypt, and what was it Spain? I'm not sure but anyways people are waking up, watch the effing video. All your arguements will be answered that's why I posted the video.

Good! Keep up the fight my man.

Until 90% of the population is awake and aware to reality there will never be change in our society.

That's not true, I will tell you how to guide sheep into a revolution. I saw a ted talk on it. It's not the first person that starts the revolution, it's the 2nd guy. The first guy can stand up and look like an idiot and everyone will laugh, but when a second person comes, he solidifies the idea that, "wait a minute, there might be something to this". When people see the 2nd, or in the case the first couple million views, they will the same exact thing. Than when it's becoming the new "trend" people rush to join so that they are not "left behind" This is about getting this video across, because it is so intelligently spoken, few arguments are left unanswered. Both these man were smart, and the reporter tried everything he could to make Brand look foolish. He tried what Brian did earlier, but Brand had a question and a logical reason for everything. There's gold in this video. I feel it.

Again if you watch the video, Brand will be able to explain this.

Until you watch MPG please don't reply. I want someone to argue with who knows what we are arguing about. You can't see the world revolution and than just spit of bunch of jargon. I mean you can... but it's really wasting both of our time and we could spend that time changing the world. Have a good day.

Happy people don't revolt, if you read otherwise in your history books you should get a refund.

Spain, Egypt, Greece..

They looked pretty **** ****ed off to me.

Revolution will never occur until the populace wakes up and is outraged at the reality around them.
